On the A train in Manhattan, my cousin's and I stepped in to help a woman being beaten by a man. We grabbed him up and dropped him. When the cops came she told them we jumped her boyfriend and asked them to arrest us. Luckily it happen near the booth and the booth worker was able to support our side of the story. After that I chose to mind my business unless there's a child being hurt. Being a hero just ain't worth it.
I read a story on Reddit about a dude who saved this lady that got in a car accident. Her car caught on fire and the dude pulled her out while she was unconscious and burning. She later sued that man and completely ruined his life so bad, even his lawyer told him he was better off letting her burn. Crazy world

For my trouble, I got six weeks in a cast and eight in a brace. Him? A 9-month conditional discharge - no jail, no criminal record. Same in San Francisco, but I still did it. I made the mistake of calling the cops afterwards. They were spectacularly unhelpful but I didn't give them my name when I realized that as far as they were concerned, I was the problem, not the criminal. I'll never call the cops again. For anything.
@Roy Slaven it’s not a law, per se, but is used in many cases, including police trying to hold down a criminal for arrest if the perp is hurt during the struggle. It is interwoven at almost every incident at this time.

The perpetrator, unless there was a police witness, could file criminal charges or civil charges against you. Even if all are easily adjudicated, you are ruined by having to defend yourself in court and public opinion.
My room mate used pepper spray to defend herself she got a letter from city attorney stating she was in violation of the law I was a witness at the hearing case was dismissed.

Normally I would think you would be cautious because you don't what form of weapon the guy might have. But going by his attire he doesn't appear to have a weapon, so first warn him and then go in if that doesn't work.

In the event of violent resistance, the situation has escalated and depending on the state you may use equal resistance such as punching back or draw your gun which you may use. Keep the gun aimed on point to deter the attacker. If the attacker charges, you should fire. In states in which you cannot shoot right away, you must wait for the assailant to draw a knife, gun or other such deadly weapon. Upon drawing it, you are now authorized in using deadly force. As someone who has been to summer school I completely agree. You're not supposed to defend yourself because you might end up hurting someone who "has more problems than you do". That, and how are the authorities supposed to explain to the families of these criminals why their relative got beaten nearly to death while they were out in public without anyone watching over them.

If you are threatened with jail time for interfering with a crime in progress and you have a family to support it is a tough call. Been several cases in NYC where people stepped in to help & were charged & prosecuted for using excessive force ON THE CRIMINAL. One case even when the criminal got away & the store owner was charged using the video from his security system. Don't know if that video is still up but it was a few months ago.
