The infamous cover of the NY Times stating Ford telling NYC to "Drop Dead". In reality Ford did not say that, Ford did eventually give NYC loan guarantees. Beame inherited the mess from Lindsay the day Beame took office in January of 1974. He had 4 short years to do the best he could with what he had! It wasn't a simple fix and it wasn't just loan guarantees, a number of new things had to be and were implemented.
Ford rightly told them to go fly a kite. Years later, NY realised it was better not to have taken a loan after all. Nice to see a Democrat, in Hubert Humphrey also supporting the President.
