When I was a kid (I'm 72 now) I remember that the Rockaway Parkway station did not have the building that is there today - the trains on the two tracks are at street level, and it looked like they could continue running along the street past the station. In fact, that's what they originally did - they used to go all the way to Seaview Avenue on a private right of way. When the line was cut back to the current terminal, it was replaced by the B42 bus to which the Transit Authority provided a free transfer by having it start within the subway station. Also, there was a railroad crossing at the E105 St. station, the only railroad crossing in the subway system.

I remember when I was in 1st grade, I would have to wake up early and take the L train to Union Square and take the 4 train to the Bronx because my new elementary school was in the Bronx and my family didn’t move to the Bronx yet. By 2nd grade, I moved closer towards the school and would take bus instead. Fast Forward to now, I’m in college and sometimes I would take the 4 train going home.

This line has two stations with unique layouts not found on any other station in the system. Wilson Ave at 23:44 is the only station in the system which the platform for one direction is exposed and the other is enclosed (but not actually underground and is in fact at ground level). Broadway Junction at 26:16 is the only station in the system with an island platform serving both directions plus a side platform for the other and only the direction without the side platform uses the island platform whereas the other with the side platform uses that instead of the island platform, thus leaving that side of the latter unused. Bowling Green on the 4 and 5 does not count because while its southbound platform was originally an island platform serving both tracks, the northbound side has since been fenced off and replaced by a new side platform to relieve congestion, thus converting the island platform to a side platform.

I mentioned in the Q train video that a weedkiller train would be an idea for that line after Prospect Park, the L line looks like it needs a heavy duty vacuum cleaning train for all the gabage that seems to end up on the tracks and not in gabage cans.... I have noticed in these videos this seems to be a major problem on all lines
@mariotorres6287
@mariotorres6287 Год назад
I agree with you. The trash is atrocious. Note that most of the refuse occurs near or at stations. People like to complain about "the dirty subway", but people create the problem. Dispose of trash properly, and you won't have a dirty subway. Complaining about rats? See previous sentence. I wonder what folks from other countries think when they see all that trash. Our subway deserves better.
@wtaenyc
@wtaenyc Год назад
Thanks for sharing. It would be interesting to see a weedkiller train in the system, one that is safe for the system and for the communities in affected areas. As for the vacuum train, this too is an interesting idea as it would assist in keeping the tracks and system cleaner, along with more folks starting to place their trash into the bins like you mentioned. This is bringing awareness and now that we can envision better, we can start by doing better. It will take time, but Together Everyone Achieves More 🫶🫡

I know I’m late to the party, but thank you for covering the L line. The L was one of the lines I took the most during my lifetime in New York since I lived right near it. I’m glad I grew up when the L had the R-40 S as the fleet, and that the line still had R-42s when I was in high school. I miss railfanning on it. The other things I miss about those days on the L is when it still had the original configuration to go to Atlantic Avenue with the sharp turns to run over Snediker Avenue. The other is when the track connection was still there with the Bay Ridge Branch of the LIRR/New York & Atlantic Railroad. Fun fact about the L: the large gap with no columns in the middle to the west of the 6th Avenue station is due to the fact that 6th Avenue was the original western terminal of the line in Manhattan.

I assume that eventually you will be covering every line in the New York system? I have a question: Are the blinking green signals indicative of automatic signalling in effect for the upcoming section of track? Thanks. Do you have any plans to travel and do videos for other American subway systems, such as Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, etc.? That would be great!!

To Fix the A Division I Propose this We would build a new smoother curve to allow 5 trains to travel directly between 138th street Grand Concourse and 3rd Avenue 149th street without stopping at 149th street Grand Concourse. In other words, move that 5 train merge between Grand Concourse and 3rd Avenue. Almost Everyone will see a faster service and a few riders that need to go to 149th street Grand Concourse can use the 2 train. The 145th Street platforms will get extended and we would construct a new tunnel along the East River to reach the 149th Street upper level so that 3 trains can run with 4 trains via Jerome and Bedford Park Blvd will get converted into two island platforms with 3 trains terminating in the Outer tracks and 4 trains can continue to Woodlawn in the Inner tracks meanwhile the 148th street yard will be converted back into a maintenance facility and the Harlem 148th street station will also be converted back into Lenox Yard to store additional trains To Fix Rogers Junction we would need to add two switches so that 2 and 3 trains Run to Flatbush while the 4 runs local to New lots and the 5 runs express to Crown Heights plus new interlockings around Franklin Aveune and Crown Hts would need to be created to avoid conflict between the 2, 3, 4 and 5 meanwhile 3 trains could deadhead to Livonia or 239th street yard once the rush hour is over similar to how the M train fleet works

I think that both the (M) and (R) should both turn south from Forest Hills, and then run to the Rockaway Beach Branch. You might think that the (M) will pass by Metropolitan Av with this extension. To solve this issue, the (M) will no longer run along the Nassau St line. It will run into Brooklyn on the Culver Line, which will allow for all (F) trains to run express service on Brooklyn. There will be a shuttle between Myrtle Av and Metropolitan Av as Well. But at Myrtle Av, this shuttle will stop on the upper level of the station to prevent the shuttle and (J) trains from interlining. The M train new terminus will be Church Aveune on Culver meanwhile the MTA Should kill Just kill of the Z Train at this point because skip stop is useless this will open up the opportunity of J trains Running peak direction express service on Nassau so that G Trains can go Back to it's original Routing at Forest Hills 71 Aveune
