They never mention in this documentary that when the league began in 67 NY had a team called the Generals. They played in Yankee Stadium 67 & 68. I went to about six of their games,It was something to do when the Yankees were on the road.Still have a game program.

stop ruining the fun! lol I feel like the combo of having Pele and other old stars and being over 30 years ago has lionized this team in a lot of people's hearts. Heck, I often wonder how the Galaxy with Donovan, Beckham and Keane will be looked back on 30 years from now.

@patient451 Give it time. The kids have been growing up with it, they've been playing it, what America needs is to keep nurturing this interest. Another issue is in most countries football is played by rich and poor and it's sort of a middle class sport here. Older generations didn't like it and probably equate it to a communist sport or something stupid like that. The young people will push the game to the mainstream. It will happen.

Well I'm back on here again after several years and I must say that I still don't get soccer. My previous comments were a bit harsh and clumsily worded. One new thing that I'd like to add to the whole soccer doesn't have stoppages thing is the fact that they do stop after every goal attempt don't they? Don't they stop and someone has to throw the ball in? Regardless trashing American sports is quite silly because they aren't even native to the U.S.A.

@soupy2 No, we shouldn't. Soccer is a perfectly legitimate and correct term for the sport. In fact, it's technically a more accurate term than football because it denotes the specific type of football, which is association football. Assoc= soccer.

Ross did a great job of selling soccer to the American public at that time by bringing all time great players to the Cosmos and somewhat Americanizing soccer so that it appealed to Americans. But truth is that only Chinaglia was in his prime at the time and that accounts for him being the all time goal scorer in NASL history. The others , Pele, Beckenbauer, Neekens , Cruyff were way past their prime and it was absured to pay them so much as it ultimately led to the collapse of Cosmos and NASL.
@drrockkso8882
@drrockkso8882 2 года назад
The problem with the NASL was that the Cosmos were the only consistently-good team during its brief period of popularity in the late 70s/80s. The Cosmos were fun to watch but the other teams weren't. American sports fans will fall in love with a dynasty but only for a short time before the novelty wears off and resentment kicks in. If one team in an American sports league becomes too dominant the rest of the country quickly turns on them (ex: the late 90s Yankees, the 2000s Patriots, and the 2010s Warriors). Americans prefer parity in their sports leagues and love it when an underdogs win the championship, which almost never happens in the top pro soccer leagues worldwide. In most countries' top soccer leagues the same 2 to 4 rich teams are the only serious contenders for the championship every year. The other 16-18 teams are just cannon fodder for the rich teams and have no chance of winning the league. They're basically just competing against each other to avoid relegation. It's hard to convince American sports fans to care about a team that they know every year has absolutely zero chance of winning a title.
@DonQwantsyou
@DonQwantsyou 2 года назад
@@drrockkso8882 well that's true that's the way Americans are, if their team has no chance of winning the championship they will quickly lose interest and not watch or attend. That's why our pro sports leagues have always had the playoffs, a short season to decide the championship which includes probably teams not deserving the chance at a championship. But they did also with the old NASL, and the Cosmos didn't always win even though they had way more talent then everyone else. I think the real reason the league folded was that they expanded much too fast to 24 teams and many of those teams could not afford to bring in big name players so people lost interest quickly, and in many cases when they tried to pay big salaries the clubs went bankrupt. MLS has survived all these years because the league is a single entity, share revenue and players are designated to clubs by the league and they keep salaries reasonable for the clubs to afford, and they are starting to get some big name over the hill players like the NASL did years ago. Plus we live in a much different world today with internet , cable, big TV money, cellphones , ect and these leagues really know how to sell their product to the public and we've become much more of a leisure oriented society for better or worse despite outrageous ticket prices.

@@drrockkso8882 The Chicago Sting were very fun to watch, and the city got behind them in a big way. Lots of personalities and a great team for a number of years. Who can forget their 1981 championship season featuring three wins against the Cosmos including the Soccer Bowl.

the Cosmos weren't exactly the best soccer team of all time. When they toured Europe the were beaten badly by some European clubs in the late 70's. In fact even Beckenbauer who played with them said that in Europe they were as good as a German League 3rd Division club.
