As the Jets have fired Robert Saleh after this 2-3 start…and a 20-36 record over the course of his 4 seasons in New York. DC Jeff Ulbrich will reportedly take over the head coaching duties…he’s led the Jets to top 5 defenses in each of the last 3 seasons.
The Rodgers and Saleh sideline moment…Quincy Williams’ postgame words on Sunday…this seemed to have run its course, and it was clear that something needed to change. While I was at camp, I was asking about Saleh…and I didn’t really get a strong feeling of support from those players.
And while I never want anyone to lose their job…I do like the sense of urgency from the Jets. They are very much still in this thing, they can be in first place in the AFC East if they beat the Bills on Monday Night. Things can turn around quickly as Peyton Manning told me on Friday, so why wait? GO ALL IN.
And I wouldn’t be shocked to see Ulbrich give this team a spark. We’ve seen interim coaches have that effect in recent years…Rich Bisaccia getting the Raiders to the playoffs…Antonio Pierce, Dan Campbell when he was in Miami. Those last 2 are former players - just like Ulbrich - who spent 10 years as a linebacker for the Niners. You obviously don’t have to be a former player to be a successful coach, but in situations like this, I do think there’s something about having played at a high level and having been in players’ shoes that resonates with the guys in the locker room.
And as I mentioned, we’ll see the effect this has on the team - and on Aaron - this upcoming Monday Night, at MetLife, in Primetime, as the Jets host the Bills. High drama in that one for both of these teams.
