There’s a homelessness epidemic in New York’s shelter system that is made even worse by the Coronavirus crisis.
With one epidemic feeding another, there is now more homelessness in New York City than at any time since the Great Depression, and it's disproportionately affecting black and brown people. More than 3000 people live on the street, and at least another 60,000 in shelters, including 21,000 children.
Reporter Krishnan Guru-Murthy witnesses the harsh reality of addiction, fear, violence, and intimidation in a system meant to be helping the city’s most vulnerable men, women and children. He also meets the activists fighting to eradicate alleged inequalities in the shelter system.

Wow, the rich lady saw no value in actually speaking with the homeless people in the hotel. That is a big part of the problem. She didn't want to see their humanity and hear their individual stories, which would challenge her preconceived notions about them and create a cognitive dissonance for her re: the problem. We will never move to any real solutions to the homeless problem until we're willing to sit down with them and really understand each other.

Man you can tell that you have never been here. There are homeless on every corner, every subway you go in there is a beggar, every street there is someone sleeping on it. They stink and most are half crazy or high on anything they can get, why the hell would I want to sit next to one let alone talk to one? Especially in New York where everyone is here to work. If you aren’t here to work all day then you have to leave.

Its incredible how entitled we are all living in North America when most of the world doesn't share anything close to the same standards. Yes, many of these people have made mistakes and lack responsibility for their actions, but the general ostracization many face from "normal" society probably makes cheap avenues of pleasure in drugs and alcohol all the more appealing to cope (especially when the baseline income needed to participate is so astronomically high in many places). We all need to do better to take care of one another. Put yourself in their shoes, and realize that many were in positions where small mistakes cost them dearly- many of us make massive mistakes but have family, job or a house to fall back on, some others don't have that. Have some sympathy

There are, but most are scams. For example, the "Ready, Willing and Able" program from an organization called The Doe Fund helps homeless and ex-convicts by employing them to clean streets around major thoroughfares. They do this by signing lucrative contracts with Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) which are groups of business owners that run stores on the throughfares (i.e. 34th Street), but the org subtracts rent from the men's wages, meaning they make sub-minimum wage and pay rent to sleep in a dorm in a shelter that would otherwise be free. The family that run the Doe Fund all make 6-7 figures from the BID contracts IIRC.

I'm from the Middle East but living in the UK. The UK has a very similar situation - homelessness, extreme poverty, people starving to death. I have experienced it myself. I had to experience starvation for several years, it was so bad I now know I could have died at any moment, in fact I should have been in hospital on a drip. That was some years ago but I am facing the same again soon due to a very corrupt boss that has hounded me out of my job. Being a girl, I had to exprience the added issue of so-called "welfare organizations" for the poor, the homeless etc, trying to force me into providing favors of a certain kind in return for help - when I refused, I got made out to be a "troublemaker" and it was claimed that I had allegedly "refused help". Having lived in several countries and traveled to many more, I can honestly say that both the US and the UK are far, far more corrupt than even Pakistan, a country well known for its corruption. The difference here is that corruption gets denied, which means that the rest of the world thinks it's not happening here. As you guys rightly say, they make it out here that the US and the UK are so great and that the rest of the world is "one big slum" when in fact the worst, and most shocking, poverty can be found here, together with other issues such as illiteracy, drug addiction, alcoholism, and dependency on prescription drugs. Doctors push antidepressants on the poor to keep them knocked out so they don't complain. Here in the UK, the poor get treated like garbage - literally. This is worse here than in the US because of the class system here, whereby a person's standing in society is determined by how much their house is worth. A person who is living in rented accommodation, especially in public (social) housing, is automatically assumed to be stupid, lazy, a troublemaker and a criminal - and they get treated everywhere accordingly. They get lied to, their basic human rights denied, they get driven into suicide, they get abused and insulted everywhere they go, they are forced to live in truly disgusting conditions due to social landlords refusing to do repairs, the worst of crimes get committed against them. And they have no chance of police assisting them because police are biased against anyone in social housing - police in fact routinely abuse the poor because they know that nobody will believe the poor. And indeed - no matter how much evidence a poor person provides, they always, ALWAYS, get disbelieved by police, courts, authorities and other government organizations, they get made out to be "confused" - which is the polite term for "stupid and mentally unstable", they get falsely accused of the worst of crimes, they get kicked around like a ball. I also hope that the Indian media go and show the truth about the appalling and inhumane conditions in the US and the UK. It's impossible to talk about this here because the British - the English to be precise - claim that poor people are "only poor because they are stupid and lazy". It's precisely this disgusting and self righteous attitude that enables this disgusting situation, and the corruption everywhere, to not just continue but to get worse and worse. The conditions that I had to and still have to experience here in the UK would be unthinkable in my country of origin.

I love this. This humanizes us. I was homeless for almost a decade. People stepped over me like I was a crack in the sidewalk. But when you're down and out is when you feel MOST human. I stayed in the streets more than the shelters myself. When I learned I had to change my survival mentality (which kept me alive) into a thriving/building mentality, it changed the game for me. I got a beautiful spot on a quiet street in an outer borough now. I do miss the unpredictability and hectic nature of life back then sometimes. But maybe I'm just institutionalized. Keep ya head up. Take advantage of the programs if you can. We are in a fkd up position and it ain't entirely our fault. But be the ruler of your own kingdom too. Build it up. When they tried to work us to death, we survived and got stronger. When they took away everything we built, we built it again. When they stuck us in burning buildings, we made hip hop. We are creators. Being a king or queen isn't just where you came from. It's how you approach building the empire of your life today. Peace.

This is the second time I've tried to watch this. I had to stop it, again. I first experienced homelessness in 2014. I went to the Bowery Mission and Bellevue Men's Shelter to seek help, but just couldn't get myself to go inside of either. Bellevue is one cold, scary ass place. I've never been to prison before, but that's what it felt like I was looking at. I was able to get back on my feet without having to enter the shelter system. But I lost my job, again, in late 2019. My landlord started the eviction process in February 2020, then Covid hit and closed the courts. The only thing keeping me in my home is the eviction moratorium. Soon, I will be homeless for a second time and I don't know what to do or what will happen to me. I'm telling you, homelessness is draining, lonely and scary. If you've never had PTSD, you will develop symptoms of it the longer you are homeless.

This world is so out of whack, it's incredibly embarrassing. If they had courses every year, starting in elementary school, that teach kids about this, and cultivates their empathy, we would be in a much better situation. Which should be part of the core curriculum, every year through high school as well. I tell my daughter that my primary focus is not her grades, but more importantly that she become a good, kind, and empathetic young lady. Parents obviously have a huge role in that as well, but most are too busy focused on themselves. Maybe someday, with people like this, things will be different. At $15 dollar an hour, it's still not enough to pay rent though. You have to earn x4 times the rent price per year in order to afford a place, sure there are other ways, but even then it's hard. Rent cost haven't really changed much, even through the pandemic. Someone earning $15 dollars an hour, will have to rely on various programs to get by, even then they'll be living in a shoe box lacking a lot of commodities and even privacy. 17:30 i don't agree with that sentiment. Wherever homeless people go crime skyrockets. If they were regular black people it wouldn't have been an issue, but when you have 300 homeless people who probably use petty crime to fund drug addictions and have mental health issues it causes problems, particular in a rich neighbourhood where obtaining money and expensive possessions is easy.

You can't create a strong family when both parents need to work just to make ends meet. Also it depends on culture. In China both parents able to work in the city and left their child in the villages with their parents. They had a one child policy so that doesn't burden the grandparents, also there's no shame in chucking your kid to your parents. In America they kick out the child when they turn 18...

My family are dead. Who do I turn to? I was homeless for 10 years. No one cared, and I have a disability so I lost job after job Shelters couldn’t care less if the only work you can get is overnights, if you work overnight you don’t get to sleep. If someone is homeless, not abusing substances etc and just needs real help it’s still not there most times. There’s so many rich people who could give people a home, even a cheap one, a trailer under 5k even and change someone’s life forever. Not in NYcity maybe, but where I live yes they sell places that cheap. Yet no one helps. These places could do that for most people once, and never need to help again! But they’d rather use $5000 sheltering someone for 2 weeks only? Use funds to purchase housing! People don’t even want to see reality. No one ever seems to think they could end up in the street too, but ANYONE can with the cost of rent. I met more normal everyday people out there, people who had kids, people who had no family like me, people gay and thrown from their homes just for being themselves. People who have never touched drugs and who don’t drink, but might simply have anxiety and lose jobs. People with schizophrenia and never got the help they needed. And myself, who has a culinary degree but can’t work in that line of work because I get sick a lot, who is very smart and yet no one cared. Who lost my parents and have been raped and attacked several times, and hurt deep inside and can’t seem to figure out how to save myself and no one has ever saved me. People always yell at the homeless to “ get a job”. Working when homeless is next to impossible and I applaud anyone doing it for their extreme strength. They yell “ learn a job better yourself” Try going to school when homeless when you can not shower properly, or have any changes of clothing or sleep, and see how far you get. We all just need one person to actually care. And a ton of people don’t have that. Breakdown of the family won’t apply if family is gone forever.
