The Twin Towers were iconic, something that instantly said "New York" in a way that the replacement buildings don't, no matter how well they've been designed. It was the pairing of the towers that made them unique. Individually, each building was nothing special, but together they added up to something much more impressive. Having two towers side by side gave the whole project a monolithic feel, just like you get from other massive constructions like the Pyramids. A proud, clean, geometric design that instantly registered in your mind, and something that only existed in New York. You can see it in these photos. When the Twin Towers arrived, they looked like they were always meant to be there, and always would be. Any new buildings to replace them had to compete with that legacy. I applaud the designers of the new World Trade Center. They tried hard to come up with something iconic, but they were never going to be able to match the elegant, monolithic simplicity of the Twin Towers, and of course, every time people look at the new towers, they are reminded of the tragedy that once happened where they stood. When you think of all this, it's no surprise so many comments mention the Twin Towers, because for many, they were the symbol of New York, one that will never be fully replaced, nor will the people who perished there ever be forgotten.

The twin towers were a classic, the most iconic building in the world along with the Empire State, the king of all buildings. It was incredibly horrible when 9/11 happen. I just wish they brought back twins.
Josh morales thy weren't that iconic when they were first. A lot of people thought it looked stupid or didn't even know what it was. My aunt didn't was like 40 something when they got hit and that's when she found out about the buildings

@@kuromi5714 - thanks. Most of us that/who were born during those eras are/were lucky. I wish there was such a thing as a time machine that was actually safe to use. I would go back to St. Croix in the '80s, and lay on the beautiful, and warm beach(es). 😧
To me the old pictures are the amazing thing about this whole video. New York was so far ahead of its time back then, there was no city like it with the high rises back in the old days. I just imagine what a sight it must have been for someone coming from outside of the US in like 1930-1940s seeing the tall buildings. It must have been seen like the city of the future.
Chicago and Detroit had high rises. Detroit was actually gonna build the tallest building in the world but the great depression happened so they had to cancel plans

LifeWithJojo i was 4 when they were destroyed. Ironically, when i was 5, we went to new york and not a single person talked about the attack. I only learned about the incident when i was 12
I was just 3 at that the time when both towers destroyed. My family and I went to new york when I was 10 and I was so sad because I cannot see the iconic twin towers
I was 13 when the attacks happened. I was in school that morning when a teacher came in and told our teacher to turn on the TV. It was a terrible day. Every class we went to we just sat and watched. I remember it like it was yesterday. RIP to the victims.
I was born in 2006, 5 years after the attacks. I learned what happened to the towers from my mom in 2009 because she flew over New York City two days after the attacks because she was flying from Atlanta to Ottawa, where I live now. She could see the smoke rising all the way in the air and the smoke seen from hundreds of miles away. It was really sad and I wish I was alive before the twin towers collapsed.

During the Months leading up to 9/11, there were many vacant floors undergoing “renovations”. The elevators were also going through upgrades which took months to complete, and allowed hundreds of tradesmen, laden with tonnes of parts and equipment, free access into both buildings and in particular, the elevator shafts which provided access to every column. The weekend before 9/11 there was no operational security in the building for the best part of 2 days. This information is not a conspiracy theory, it is easily verified by the Port Authority service records. There was more than enough time & opportunity to completely wire both buildings for a controlled explosion. Wake up America, your Governments have a history of doing this. Use some of your intelligence to seek the truth yourself. May all the victims of 9/11 RIP.

Too painful to watch after 2000. But the Empire State Building is still the most beautiful tall building we still have. Just imagine loosing that one? I can't.
