Longer please. Really really interesting. Did you keep a notebook? Some photographers have published books which contains their diaries, their sketches, their notes alongside their photography. That makes for amazing reading. Thank you for your channel. 👍🏻

Awesome images, great job! I worked with the NYT throughout the 90s. The National Photo Editor would find a story with an angle in the region I covered almost every day. He did it so often, and so blatantly, I became a standing joke in their budget meetings. I got to work with some of their best reporters during that time. Some of them would ask for me, too. It's an amazing feeling working with a publication like the Times. Keep up the great work, Justin!

@@AskMOTT Some people are too fragile, not exposed to suffering, or choose to look away. That's a problem! Photojournalism is part of the solution to a society that seems to have lost its capacity to care about, to feel for others, never mind have a sense of solidarity and oneness of humanity. This can be done without gore, without exploiting people's pain, as you have done so well here. I can only imagine the emotional toll it can take, which you only touch upon. So, please, take care and thank you for keeping it real.

Those images are just riveting. Probably stronger with your constraints than a full on portrait would have been. Just a total conveyance of shame, fear, and distrust. These photo shoot stories of yours are hands-down my favorite photography content on RU-vid. I could watch a couple of hours of this. Thank you so much Justin.

More assignment videos like this please. I particularly liked the video on elephants in Myanmar. This one was harder to watch, seeing the situation for some people in Cambodia. Mind you, if you look you can probably find similar situations anywhere, its too easy to ignore it. Longer videos with more pictures would be good.

Hey Justin, really great work, very interesting story and assignment series. One thought may be to show your five favorites sometime before the very end of the video(?) - because the RU-vid "next video" suggestions pop up on the screen and obscure a portion of the images.

What do we think of these videos? You'd like some feedback, you say? Justin, I'm not aware of anyone else on RU-vid doing what you're doing with this series. It's an inside look at what it's like to be a working photojournalist. You peel back the layers of the industry, from how stories get commissioned to the real challenges a photojournalist faces when out in the field . Wow, these episodes blow me away. Make them as long or as short as you like, just keep making them. I also loved the insight you provided on how you had to pivot and creatively solve the problem of portraits of subjects who didn't want their identities revealed. It inspires me to stay creative with my photography and to work hard and fast within imposed limits but to never sacrifice quality. Keep them coming! Technical question: for stories like these, do you leave the M at home and opt for a camera with autofocus?
@AskMOTT
@AskMOTT 4 месяца назад
I really appreciate this feedback, truly. I’m thinking of making them even more personal trying to remember how I felt and what I was thinking and just opening up more. Themis particular story was way back when I was shooting Canon , but now I shoot this type of work w an M10D and an SL2-S .

Hey Hey I stumbled across your account yesterday and Yeah, I'm obsessed. Super creative work. Love it. Thanks for your inside stories in such interesting genre of photography. I love your backgroundstories. Such a big part of photography that no one seems to talk about. Happy to see your next videos. There is one thing... I like your idea of showing the images at the end of the video because these are the most important part of your work. I would love to hear more inside stories about the single image, like, what are the reasons for this angle, what are your feelings about this specific image, what would the image look like if you focused different, are you thinking about the narrative while shooting, how did you frame the people, what do YOU love in this picture? Your images are telling so much. I wonder what's your personal story behind taking the single image? Thanks for your work and time for this videos. big fan

Excellent work! I enjoyed this as I do most of your videos. I really like the way you kept the subjects anonymity through use of creative lighting/shadows/and objects. I am intrigued now to go and read the article and look up the writer’s father to see his work. Questions: When going to some of these places are you concerned about your health? Editing: as a photo journalist I believe you can’t edit the images - is that completely? Do you enhance color or crop? Lastly, was this with the SL3 or the M? Side note: I’m trying to plan taking your 2025 class.

I'd be curious to hear how you approach lens selection for your work, given that you shoot on the M system. Since you don't use a medium range zoom (i.e. 24-70mm), like I imagine many photojournalists might reach for in unpredictable environments, how did you think about which focal length to work with, and did you have others in your bag as options?
@DrTowerofterra

Amazing stuff Justin, your work always inspirational. Question on how you composed 1 and 3? Any notes you remember? The faces are coming out of the shadows almost, is that stopped down and recovered detail in post? Also are they shot wide open? Magical.
