I lived there in the 70s. My dad ran the restaurant, my mom worked in the trading post pawn booth. I was the only white kid on the school bus. I lived in the upper left room of the old hotel. It was still a hotel then, but not open. My best friend Boone lived nearby, we would roam around alot at night. We had an incredible paranormal experience near the old Bridge one night. The area is known to be extremely haunted. Not really ghosts, but ancient native American entities. You ALWAYS felt watched. My navajo buds took me out to dances and ceremonys that were just not what many white people get to experience. I was just there recently, some of the elders remembered me from the 70s. It was the best. Those people taught a young confused boy how to act like a human and laugh. Eternally grateful.

The Navajo Taco looks amazingly delicious! 😋 The fry bread does look similar to youtiao (Chinese fried stick/dough). The fruit salad looks refreshing and the other fry bread dish look good as well. I enjoyed the seeing the building's interior and it's neat that this establishment has been operating for over 100 years! 🤩 Thank you for sharing this unique experience, AK! 🤗

Really enjoying your adventures. Indigenous peoples’ fry bread is available in many areas of the U.S. and Canada and it is amazing… I worked at a museum that often had it. But as someone who used to live there… I don’t think there is a Tucson style… I think it said Tuscan. 😂

Wow! @Action Kid was on the Navajo Nation! Would have been the coolest to run into you at Cameron Restaurant. I always stop there with Shima (my mom) when we travel to Flagstaff. She loves the beef stew and fry bread for $10.50...can't beat that price! I hope the restaurant didn't charge you for your meal. I'm certain business will boom a bit with your endorsement. :)

Yes, anytime you get a chance to enjoy frybread, do it! Don't even hesitate - it's so good with the taco ingredients too. Lovely salad; I think that could have been cottage cheese under all those delicious looking summer fruits. Thank you for sharing. Perhaps the name Tuscan is pronounced "TooSan" , short a sound as in ahh.

How fun! It looks delicious. When I saw the sign "Fine dining" I thought you were financially in for it. lol But then you said the prices are "reasonable." That's good:-) That green chile (is called a poblano or pasilla chili) it's the same chili I wanted you to try. Chili rellenos are delicious! They are stuffed with cheese and covered in a light fluffy batter with sauce. They are so yummy. You said this one wasn't hot and I even saw a couple of seeds in it which makes them hotter. So if you get one sometime at a nice Mexican restaurant you will love it:-) 🧚‍♀

We love Indian fry bread. Recipe is very easy. You can also make it and drizzle honey on it or strawberries and whipped cream, also cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. So much you can do with it. I think the tacos are the best tho.

The recipe is simple yes, but making it correctly is very difficult if you're new to making it. Making it come out right is an art and it takes a lot of practice to master it. I was taught by a Navajo woman how to make it. The oil temperature has to be just right, the proportion of ingredients has to be just so, and the dough needs to proof in just the right way or the fry bread won't come out correctly. You also have to use Blue Bird brand flour and lard instead of cooking oil if you want it to be as authentic tasting and consistency as possible. It also makes it a little easier to make. But not something you'd want to eat all the time for health reasons.

@@BadDriversOfNapa I have made it many times over the years and it is very simple. I also break off small walnut size pieces and roll it gently and coat it with cinnamon sugar and deep fry it for "donut holes".

@@lornahardin4563 But my point is that it's very hard to get it to come out the way the natives traditionally do it. Sure, you could just throw the ingredients together and toss it in the pan and it will be edible and tasty, but unless you have it down to a science, it probably isn't going to have the taste, texture or consistency of traditional fry bread. The traditional way is very hard to get right.

@@BadDriversOfNapa I agree if you have a good cook. We used to have a vendor business, not fry bread, and go to Pow Wows, and we loved to get Indian tacos. Some of them were so tough that I learned to make my own. It's a lot in how much you handle the dough after letting it rise. If you have a good source keep it. I guess it boils down to good cooks and not so good of any nationality. LOL
