New Zealand Couple React to The Top 7 BADASS Planes in the US Military (PILOTS CAN SEE THRU PLANE?!) 

I'm a former F-15E Strike Eagle crew chief. The F-15 in this video who's tail number ia 90-239 was my first jet I crewed at the 391 squadron at Mountain Home AFB

Fun Fact: The A-10 Thunderbolt II is quite literally a gun with wings. The entirety of the aircraft was built around the gun.

Even aside from its military capabilities, one of my favorite tidbits about the Warthog is that every time the Air Force brass start to make serious noises about getting rid of it, both the Army AND the Marines offer to take over the entire program. There is no aircraft our ground troops love more than the A-10.

They built the A-10 around the GAU-8 gun. The nose wheel is off set to the right do the gun is mounted on the centerline of the aircraft. The 30mm projectiles are slightly bigger than a standard soda can and the overall size, including the shell casing is about the same as a one quart milk bottle.

Top Gun was Navy so they didn’t use f-15’s (Eagle) but f-14 (Tomcat). Very similar in looks, but the Tomcat was designed to take off and land on a carrier and had a cool movable sweeping wing design. Surprised the b-2 (Spirit) didn’t make this list, the engineering it took to make a “flying delta wing” be stable was super impressive.

The A 10 Warthog is the absolute g.o.a.t.! As an American citizen it's my favorite military aircraft. No fancy bells and whistles, just a flying tank with a big gun and can carry a larger payload of bombs than a B 17.

A-10 Pilots have saved so many of the ground troops it is amazing.

I am a US Navy veteran Operations Specialist ( radarman ) veteran . My favorite badass aircraft is the E/A 18G Growler electronic warfare variant of the F/A 18 Superhornet . Growlers are designed to blind and kill enemy radar systems with electronic beams and missiles .

Another important aircraft that helps the others be badass is the KC 135. The in flight refueling “station”. I was given an opportunity as a civilian to fly in one of those and watch a squadron of F16s refuel in the air. The boon operator lays on their stomach and looks out a window in the tail of the aircraft. In that position they skillfully guide the boon to the fuel port on the incoming aircraft. I watched in awe. Check out some of the videos on them.

If you get a chance look up the F-15 flying home with her right/starboard wing blown off. If I'm remembering correctly it was an Israeli Air Force plane. I've always liked the plane, but seeing that video left me stunned. I love your family and appreciate your appreciation of my country and especially your respect for my military! The craziest thing, you can sometimes meet these pilot's. They are the most dangerous men and women in the air in the planet, but so friendly and nice in real life.

the B-52 Stratofortress is one of my favorite USAF aircraft. it was first deployed in the 1950's and is expected to be in the air for 100 years before retirement. this duration is a testament to it's solid design. it's well worth watching a mini-documentary about this plane.

Growing up here in Las Vegas and frequently moving back, I've gotten to live in close proximity to Nellis AFB so I havebeen able to see all of these airframes, as well as the F-117, F-4, A-4, and the USAF Thunder Chickens...I mean the Thunderbirds. My favorite time of year though is when the Red Flag training is in effect; you see not only many of the USAF fighter and attack aircraft, but also USN and USMC combat aircraft and support planes, as wel las hte various international crews, such as the RAF, Royal Aussie Air Force, Canadian Defense Forces, Israel, Saudi last year, Turkey, Japan, South Korea, the list goes on and on. The RAF Tornado in formation is a sight to see.

I was surprised with how LOUD the B-1 is. I was radar maintenance in the Air Force. On one exercise, our shelter was about 30-40 yds off the runway. When the B1 was taking off, we couldn't hear each other INSIDE OUR maintenance shelter. We just had to wait for them to finish taking off.

Many decades ago, during a field exercise at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina I was returning to our area after towing a disabled truck back to mainside shop. After getting directions to where we were supposed to be, no GPS back then, I came across an area that was awful quiet and barren. Remember I'm following a map, all of a sudden there was this deafening roar. I was along the outer edge of an air to ground bombing range and an F4 Phantom was a couple hundred feet over head. Needless to say someone got a chewing out for giving those directions.

I joined the USAF back in 2008 as an aircraft electrician, and personally worked on A-10Cs and F-15Es. I can personally attest to how awesome those jets are. One of my favorite jokes about my specialty is: "The best part about being an aircraft electrician is that you can work on almost any jet, which means you can be assigned almost anywhere in the world. The bad part is that you can work on almost any jet, so you can be sent to almost anywhere in the world."

The B-2 deserved so much more than a passing mention.

You should research the story of the B52. The fact that it was effectively designed overnight after Boeing initial design was rejected during a contract review, an is still flying more than 60 years later is amazing.

When she talked about being the one loading the bombs; there’s a good story where the guy who founded famous Amos cookies got drafted and had a job stacking bombs and was terrified of it and told his boss his mom died twice so he could skip work

The fighter that you’re wondering about in “Top Gun”, is the F-14. It had the longest run in the naval forces. It was considered to be the most deadliest fighter in the military inventory. And when “Top Gun” came out, recruitment skyrocketed. Top speed was Mach 2.4 with a healthy load of ordinance.

On your U.S. trip (and I know this won't happen this time) it would've been SO cool if you could've planned to be at an air show somewhere in the country, and see these things in person.

Also I suggest looking at a couple of my favorite aircraft from WW2 if you haven't already. The Vought F4 Corsair, and the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. 2 unique airframes that were awesome. The RNZAF used the Corsair too.

A-10 fun fact: If you ever hear it, you weren't the target! The configuration of the engines and tail allow it to fly over you before you hear it!

Guys if you should get to Kansas on a trip, make sure to check out the Kansas Cosmoshere in Hutchinson, Kansas. Its affiliated with the Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. Most of its displays are US space program related. Hint, there's a SR-71 on a pedestal in the lobby, just inside the front entrance. You can touch it.

As someone who used to do maintenance on ordnance, I can assure you, having drilled into them and beaten them with hammers, they are very safe and take quite a few mechanical as well as electronic saftey measures to prevent them from being live. There are 2 terms I remember vividly that I always asked when told to come to the munitions depots to do maintenance or repairs on missiles or bombs. Being "live" referred to the warheads, or detonators being attached and connected. Being "hot" meant they were not safe and as such could deploy and be explosive upon activation. Ordnance never went hot until the pilots were in the seat and hands were up and visible, allowing the munitions personnel to arm them and render them ready to fire. This only occurred right before the planes left to taxi onto the runway, for obvious reasons to prevent a negligent discharge around personnel. But most munitions were made "live" before leaving the munitions depot, transported to the flightline apron the planes were parked, and then finally loaded onto the aircraft. But even in storage, it makes sense to have them with live warheads ready to go. Only when big maintenance, disassemblies, and big inspections happen, when the warheads were disconnected and removed were they no longer live. But regardless, unless they are made hot by the weapons munition personnel, I have plenty of stories of hitting them things with hammers! 🤣

A big grin crossed my face when the C130 came up! I was a flight mechanic/crew chief in the USAF for 24 years & the Herk is near & dear to my heart. She took me to over 35 countries, is tough as nails & brought me home safely every time. I had the opportunity to be part of a tactics training course & got to meet the guys from your Royal New Zealand Air Force (also a C130 crew). Good bunch of fellows, wish we could have had more time to get to know each other. Would love to have traveled down to your part of the world but never happened. Did have a buddy who went down there, via South America etc.

The B1 has swing wings, meaning it can change the sweep angle of the wings during flight. You should look up video of it with the wings all the way back. It's so beautiful.

Great Video Kiwi's! I'm an old Marine and road in those C-130's. What a work horse. The aircraft in " Top Gun " was the Grumman F14 Tomcat, bigger and heavier than the F-15. The F-14 has swing wings, variable geometry, the wings extend outward for more lift at low speed such as take-off and landing. The f-14 was replaced by the F-18. What a great aircraft it was too! As for other aircraft being developed, of course. You just can't underestimate Kelley Johnson's boys down at the Lockheed Skunk Works, they're always up to something. I love the awe that you expressed , rightly so. The US Air Force is awesome, it's the largest and most advanced in the world. The USN is the second largest air force in the world. The A-10 Warthog is an aircraft my husband spent 15 years loading and working on the enormous 30mm Gatling gun that pokes out the nose of the plane. He was discharged from the Marines after Desert Storm and joined the Michigan Air National Guard, where this aircraft platform was, up until this year, the one our pilots flew in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait, among other places. This is not a fancy aircraft, but it’s one which is deeply loved and appreciated by army and marine corps ground troops anywhere. Just like the B stands for bomber and the F stands for fighter, the A in A-10 stands for attack. The aircraft carries all manner of ordinance meant to come in and support troops on the ground who need help, among other things. They are called in when troops are in trouble or trapped or taking incoming fire, and they always come in in pairs. They will fly in from both sides of our troops and fly “scissor” patterns where one will swoop down and then up and the other will alternate with the first. It’s pretty amazing to watch. This plane is not one that flies high when it’s doing its job. It flies much lower to the ground than most, to the point where the pilot and target can see each other. They’re heard way before they arrive, and when they fire the GAU-8 Gatling gun, because the rounds are fired faster than the plane and faster than the speed of sound, people on the ground only hear the gun fire after it’s hit its target. It makes a really distinctive sound “ BRRRRRRTTTT”, and some joke that it sounds like a big fart. Silly, I know. But the A-10 has saved thousands of lives in battle when no other aircraft could get close enough to the bad guys and good guys, including other aircraft, tanks, buildings, ammunition dumps and so forth without being shot down. This is called close-air support and it’s honestly still the best aircraft to do this important work. The Air Force is trying to retire this whole fleet in exchange for the F-35, and other platforms and you can see how troops and marines would not want to see this happen. It’s an old platform, and has required updates over the last couple of decades to allow it to perform within the Air Force and at its best. I guess some would like to see fancier and more advanced planes, but this A-10 will be beloved by many. This is why: it is the easiest aircraft of all to fly. The pilot is completely protected by the “titanium bathtub”. It can fly with one half of a wing shot off, one of the 2 jets not functioning, no landing gear, and on little fuel. In fact, in the entire fleet over its entire history, only 5 A-10s have ever been shot down. The cyclical rate of fire for the GAU-8 as installed in the A-10 is 3,900 rounds/minute, which works out to 65 rounds/second. That means the A-10 could (theoretically) fire continuously for 20.769 seconds. BUT if you fire the gun continuously, the force of the gun would stall the plane out and crash it. That’s a simplistic explanation of the power of this Gatling gun, but it’s close. So, it’s really powerful - and scary to the enemy. A good example of a most amazing A-10 pilot is Col. Kim Campbell, (retired). She is and was such a skilled pilot, that in 2003 after taking significant damage to her aircraft in Iraq, she was able to finish her mission, and get back to base with little fuel, no brakes, no hydraulics, no landing gear, no stabilizers and by steering and landing manually. We think it’s beautiful even as it’s not sleek. But it’s a great example of how battle tested, tried and true trumps expensive, overly engineered, slick and sleek where there is simply more stuff to go wrong. Loyal as always. Fun fact about the F15. I believe it was some type of mid air collision that caused it but while in flight an F15 had one of it's wing completely torn off and the pilot was still able to fly it to an air field and land.

Hello from Switzerland, the "old" B-52, I think nobody could have imagined at the time that this type of aircraft would be in service for so long and it already has many operations under its belt. The B1 (and B1 Lancer) is also a great plane, a supersonic heavy bomber, that's impressive, I love the swing wing design. The C-130, this "universal transporter" is probably the solution for the most difficult logistics tasks, such as unpaved or short runways, robust as anything else, a real workhorse that can also be used civilly, e.g. used as a firefighting aircraft. The dropping of bombs seems to me to be more of a show here, because the US armed forces have more suitable types of aircraft for this. The A-10, a real "attack dog" so to speak, as a ground force I would wish for this aircraft for close air support, I doubt there is anything better for the job (I highly doubt that the F-35 can really fill that role). The operations performed such as u.A. in Iraq and Afghanistan speak volumes how effective and powerful this machine is. In addition, it has a very good concept for protecting its pilot (titanium hull as projectile/fragment protection). The 2nd (emergency) control system using the "traditional" cable pull enabled a pilot to safely return the machine to the base and land it despite severe damage, hardly any other machine would have remained controllable in the air.

As my veteran friends have said "If you hear the A-10, you weren't the target." That flying tank is the best by a mile.

Back in the early 80's we lived across the highway from an Air Force base in Missouri (not saying which one). Every year they put on airshows with the Blue Angels and assorted aircraft, but the showstopper was always the A 10 warthog. Precision bombing runs and strafing with that Gatling gun was a jaw dropping spectacle to watch. They would build 8 small buildings, and flew 8 warthogs 2x2 and blow up those small buildings with either bombs or their guns, all in a single pass I might add. Needless to say, it was quite a thrill to live so close to an Air Force base with all the different aircraft and helicopters flying in and out of there each day.

The aircraft in "Top Gun" was the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, which was retired from service in 2006.

i was a weapons loader on the A-10 and B-1b. there are a few aircraft that was not listed in this video that are really amazing. the one that you would really love to look at is the B-2 Spirit.

Watch a couple of A-10s having target practice at grafenwoehr germany, it was at dusk just after the sun dipped behind the mountains. They would come in slow. When the gatling gun went off it was a stream of tracers rounds that made it look like a laser beam. The aircraft looked as though they were at a complete stop, in mid air. Every round hit within a ten meter radius. Sickest ground support aircraft on the planet!

My favorite Fighter was the F-14 Tomcat. That is the jet on the original Top Gun movie and the old jet Tom Cruise flew at the end of Maverick. I was on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, CVN-71 right before the F-14's were decommissioned. I had the pleasure of working Catapult 3 and launching that aircraft from the catapult. Nothing beats Full Afterburner on a pitch black night from an F-14! The sights and sounds are amazing!

I live right by an Air Force base where they do training and testing with the B-1 Lancer. You can regularly feel the ground shaking as it flies over and it sounds like an earthquake coming from they sky.

One thing I never understood about the A-10 is why it was given to the Air Force. . .it really is more of an aircraft best-suited to the Marine Corps. . .it truly is one helluva aircraft. . .the B52 first rolled out in 1952, it is amazing that it is only 2 years younger than me. . .

I’m sure the army and the marines will have no problem taking over the warthog program. If you think about it, it really should be in the hands of marines and army pilots.

Heard the story regarding the A-10, an incident that caused an injury. Long story short, ground troops were doing post fight procedures. One thing the gun barrel can do is be twisted with a wrench and its percussion primed 30mm rounds. The ground troops were in a rush to go home on a Friday evening and skipped the safeing step, a simple pin that prevents the rotational twist that can be done. Monday morning it was scheduled for hangar/back shop maintenance. The gun still had not been safer at that point. And some maint was done and the twist was done by someone at the end of the barrel. There are steps in place to prevent such incidents

The iconic "brrrrrrrt" of the A-10 main gun is music to the ears of every foot soldier and ground pounding Marine. They have saved countless lives and taken incredible amounts of battle damage while maintaining airworthiness. If there's one single plane that is truly idolized, it's the warthog

I was a JFO and had A-10s and other aircraft on station in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Apache was like a close friend but the A-10 was like an angel. One brrt and everything stoped. Amazing aircraft. Now it is most likely finally retiring and there isn’t a close air ground replacement for it. The air force says the F-35 will fit the bill but I doubt that. If they actually retire it they need a basic atg aircraft.

The Litmus test is that they are still in service 30+ years after being introduced. They've all undergone change and updating, but they're just too good to mothball.

Lot of "Badass" iconic planes they missed out on in this video. F-4 Phantom(unrivaled in its day), F-14 Tomcat, F-18, B-2 Sprit, and the new B-22 Raider. Not to mention the intellegence gathering planes such as the U-2 and SR line.

The F-14 Tomcat was the one featured in the original Top Gun, as well as the sequel. The F-15 Eagle does have a superficially similar appearance, especially when viewed from the front. I think it's probably not too unusual that they would be confused, or even thought to be the same aircraft. On a personal note, I consider the F-14 to be one of the most beautiful fighter jets ever created. Something about the graceful curves are really pleasing to me, from an aesthetic perspective.

The a-10s engines make such a distinctive sound as well as the firing of the Gatling gun that the enemies in Afghanistan would just simply hear the plane engines through the mountain passes and would literally run for cover. And the "brrrrrt" sound of the Gatling gun is something both amazing and terrifying. Each round is roughly the size of a beer bottle. Some of the rounds contain depleted uranium which basically melts the outer armor shell of the tank allowing the tungsten core inside to penetrate

The Warthog plane was literally designed around the gatlin gun. The McDonnell Douglas F-15 looks like the F-14 Tomcat in "Top Gun" but while the Eagle has its advantages that makes bad guys cry the Tomcat can sweep its wings back mechanically for high speed or out perpendicularly for maneuverability. The bear on the bed? I've seen it in videos where someone unstuffs it and hides inside to freak out family members. It'd be a fun video for Denzel to hide inside... and... slowly make someone nervous... Explore that on RU-vid then try it...

From 1971 to 1975 I was in USAF SAC,my job was to tow and park B-52s and KC 135s (mostly during the Line backer ops)From 1985 to 1986 I worked for Rocwell Internatioal in Palmdale Ca on the assembly of the B-1 .

I went to my first airshow this year in Cocoa Beach FL. Seeing the USAF Thunderbirds in person is awesome.

BTW, I was an ECM Tech, that worked on the 23rd TFW “Flying Tigers”, back in the late 80’s at England AFB, Alexandria, LA.

Aurora is the supposed name of the replacement for the Blackbird (SR71). Speculation is a 7+ Mach with scramjet or aerospike. The toy company Mattel released a model, which was completely tracked down, and every one seized by secret service agents, in the late eighties or early nineties. No photos exists of either. It is also speculated that it has been replaced by a low orbital insertion vehicle, which I speculate is a satellite killer. The next battlefield has every starlink targeted! Low orbit will be WWIII, and communications will be the victim. Imagine the crippling effect on an economy. Maybe New Zealand is the best spot to weather the storms. 😂

I don't know if you are aware of the fact that the Batwing Stealth Bomber was made public in 1991 when it dropped the first bombs on downtown Baghdad. It was so fast that it dropped the payload and was out of range of the antiaircraft guns when they started shooting. The plane was actually put into service in the early 1970's. Keeping this one thing in mind gives you proof that the U.S. military has all kinds of weapons, under wraps, ready to go that are no doubt far more advanced than the F-22 and F-35.

I flew on the B52 which has been called "the deadliest aircraft in history". The wingspan is so wide that when it turns tightly on the runway, the inner wing of the turn actually goes backwards. The B52 also has a characteristic that once was classified called the crosswind crab and allows it to land "sideways". The B52 may very well be in service when it is 100 years old because it is very adaptable. Its current role is that of a standoff launch platform. It can approach an enemy and orbit for long periods of time launching cruise missiles when needed, while all the time out of reach of the enemy's defenses.

My dad loaded bombs on planes during the Vietnam War. He said it was very boring. Would volunteer to be a gunner on huey's (helicopters) that did rescue missions to break up the day.

The F-14 Tomcat was the twin tail plane featured in the first "Top Gun"... it was a Navy only fighter, kinda looks like a F-15 though.😉

The F-14 Tomcat was "Top Gun". It is the US Navy version of the F-15 with obvious differences in heavy landing gear, tailhooks and foldable wings for storage and use on an aircraft carrier. The F-15 Strike Eagle does not require folding wings or extra heavy-duty landing gear or tail-hooks, as they do not land on nor stored on ships. They look similar as you can tell from the #s (F-15 and F-14) they were designed about the same time.

Probably not the first to say this but I'm gona go ahead and say it any ways. Fun fact about the A-10 is if the main gun fires for too long, it's recoil has enough power to knock the itself out of the sky by eliminating all forward momentum. And to top it of, it was designed by general electric.

Top Gun featured the F-14 Tomcats, naval interceptor. It looks similar to the F-15s but have swept wings that can be "extended" for subsonic speeds.

True. Bombs have safety devices that have to be removed before flight. The arming vein of an M905 fuse will have to spin at 300 rpms with the safety pin removed to arm. .

The F-35 is seriously impressive technically. The ability to look "through" the plane is crazy. And it's battlefield awareness capabilities make it extremely powerful. Networking all the stuff around it together. The F-22 is a terrifying jet. If you get close enough to dog fight it, something has gone very wrong for the F-22. It's designed to kill everything from well outside visual range. The A-10 is the angel watching over the ground troops. That plane is so ugly it's beautiful. And that gun... brrrrrrt. Short bursts and hundreds of deplete uranium slugs smash through any armor. If you hear the gun, you're already dead, the bullets just haven't hit you yet. And it will never get cancelled because the troops refuse to let it get cancelled. It has saved them way too many times. And that thing can take a pounding and still land at home. They have come home with more holes than wing and still landed. Absolute beast of a plane. The B-1 is a gorgeous plane. It has terrain following capabilities that allow it to fly extremely low to the ground, pop up and drop insane amounts of bombs. The AC-130 is also terrifying like the A-10. If one of those things is overhead, you're going to die. The amount of fire it can lay down extremely accurately is insane.

My cousin piloted an AC-130 "Spooky" in Afghanistan. That's all I can say. lol I got to sit in the cockpit of an A-10 at the NY State Fair when I was about 12, it was awesome.

5:51 The original Top Gun movie featured the F-14 Tomcat and have since been retired in 2006. The sequel Maverick, featured the F-18 Super Hornet. Both are Navy Fighter. The F-15 Eagle is an Air Force fighter jet.

Raptor is #1. A-10 #2. Both were never offered for sale. There's a reason for that.

Check out the predator drone. It has a lot of kills and is capable of carrying hellfire missiles. The US has a bunch of attack drones.

There was a movie from the late 80s (I believe) called Iron Eagle that I just loved! It was not as well known as Top Gun but it was along those same lines.

It was funny to me that you commented on loading the weapons on the aircraft. That was my job in the Air Force for 20 years. In fact some of the aircraft in the video I recognize the tail numbers and have personally work on. While on a deployment to Iraq the 18 F-15Es in my unit dropped over 5000 bombs in less than 6 months. It's very cool to see you all get excited about all of the military equipment that military members get to work with everyday. Often we as military members take that for granted.
