Two of my ancestors were aboard the Mayflower and were part of the founding of Plymouth Colony. One of them, whom I am named after, was the Mayflower's cooper (he built and maintained the ship's storage barrels), and the other was an older girl of about 17 or 18. In the first winter of sickness, her father, mother and younger brother died, leaving her alone. Eventually, she and my namesake, who were fairly close in age, ended up marrying -- probably one of the first few marriages in the colony. They had 10 kids, including my next-generation ancestor Joseph (named after the little brother who died). I have read as much history as I can about this first New England settlement. This synopsis of it is fairly accurate.

It was just this year that I learned that my first ancestor in this country was a Puritan who came to Plymouth in 1633. Not the first Thanksgiving, by any means, bot not that far removed from it either. When I learned the story of the first Thanksgiving, we were not fed a sanitized version, but were told about warfare between the settlers and some of the tribes and alliances with other tribes. We also learned about Squanto and Samoset and the horrendous deaths of the Puritans through 1620-21. Of course, I only live about 150 miles from Boston and I learned all this some 55 years ago or so. History wasn't quite so sanitized in those days.

In New England we plant “three sisters” gardens in elementary school to learn about both ecology and history, as it’s the same way the natives taught the pilgrims. Corn provides stalks for the beans to grow on, the beans fix nitrogen into the soil, and the squash grows big fan leaves that prevent weeds fgrom growing

I just discovered your channel and now I'm addicted to it! Such a beautiful and wholesome family! I met a guy from NZ in an online video game and he became one of my best friends. We finally met in Los Angeles a few years ago and I still chat with him once in a while. People from NZ are amazing, and your country looks like a paradise! To answer your question, we are taught about Thanksgiving as children, but our education system tends to downplay the later troubles between the colonists and the native americans. These days, Thanksgiving is sometimes seen as a controversial reminder of our nations troubled past with the land's native people, but I think most folks try to focus on the positive message of Thanksgiving. Personally, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year because you know you'll eat well and it's a time to reflect on the things in your life that you're grateful for. We can't undo our past, but we can try to build a better future together. Thank you for your wonderful and heart-warming videos!

NZ Fam, speaking for myself having been born in the 60s we were all taught about the Star-Spangled banner and Thanksgiving and all the other historical events from our country's past. Those Americans that don't know about the Star spangled banner are either new Americans or maybe a younger generation because it's hard for me to fathom that anybody of my generation would not know about it. I will say that this film was a lot more detailed than most presentations. It was a lot closer to the actual history books for those that would dig in those books. I was born and raised in Ohio and served in the Navy for 20 years I've lived in many places all around the world. I've never made it to New Zealand but I have been to Australia and Tasmania to the South. I am presently an expat in Panama. Panama doesn't have time off for Thanksgiving this year. Last year one of their holidays did cover Thanksgiving so it was nice to have that off, but this year we will be celebrating it on the weekend after Thanksgiving instead. In my heart it doesn't matter the exact day it just matters that you're thankful for what God has provided in your life with family friends jobs food etc. God richly bless you and enjoy your first Thanksgiving meal. Praise be to God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

That native planting method is called the "Three Sisters" (and there's actually a fourth sister, sunflowers). A caught fish was buried in a small mound, and then corn & squash are planted on the mound. A bit later, pole beans are planted near the base of the new corn stalks. The beans use the stalks as vertical support and help fix nitrogen in the soil, which corn requires a *LOT* of. The squash is ground cover crop that grows in a tangled mat, which white-tailed deer hate; but the corn still attracts them, so when they get bold enough (or hungry enough) they come in for the corn and get shot for the trouble. The fish was needed for extra potassium, among other nutrients. But not everyone agrees with the view about the first Thanksgiving, as the remant of that same tribe actually calls the Thanksgiving holiday "The Day of Mourning" as that political alliance didn't remain in their favour for very long.

May your first thanksgiving be full of appreciation for everything you have. We usually say a prayer or simple invocation or blessing of the food, followed by everyone taking turns saying what they are most grateful for, and of course you extend the blessings out to the world: the poor, the sick, the ones not home (like soldiers) and the children, the elderly, and for peace. Amen. Enjoy lots of food. Lots!

I'm from Massachusetts and my family lives on Cape Cod in Provincetown and Hyannis. Thanksgiving was such a big deal growing up in New England. There is even a place called Plimoth Plantation that you can go to in Plymouth, MA that replicates the original Pilgrim colony, where workers speak in Olde English and wear clothing from the period and even churn butter and mash corn like they used to. The history of Thanksgiving was taught to me when I was in Elementary school in the 1970s. I don't recall if we learned as much of the detail that was in the video. More details were learned in the upper elemtary years ( ages 9-12). By 6th year we were focused on learning our state's history. For me that was Minnesota.

I learned the history of it in the 1950's in Elementary school. It was a one day class where they said how hazardous the crossing was, and some died along the way, then the Indian attacks, starvation and illnesses and miraculously 47 of them survived that first winter. Then the Indians saved them by forming an alliance, teaching them to grow food, etc. I was told the first celebration was a Thank You to the Indians for saving them. It just shows that none of us get through life without the help of others.

I love and teach my students the history of Thanksgiving. During this observance and giving of thanks for another year of blessings and provision many families do acts of service as well. In years past my students and I created a service project in which we made boxes with all the fixings for a Thanksgiving dinner from the turkey to the pies and everything in between. My students would write a letter of encouragement and blessings for the family receiving the meal. The social worker at our school chose the families so it would be unknown to us. Over the years I got to see my students grow in compassion, empathy, and gratitude. This year my family, total of 17 of us, prepared and served 200 meals to people in need, refugees and homeless. God has blessed us and I am thankful that God provided an opportunity for us to show love and bless others during this season that we give thanks to God for another year of provision and blessing.

When I was growing up, I was taught in school, church and by my parents and grandparents the importance of not just being thankful for what I had but giving thanks to God for all that I had. I feel that too much emphasis is placed now days on being thankful, which is confused for being grateful, and not enough recognition of all with which the Creator has blessed us. Somehow, “I am thankful for…” has replaced “I am thankful to God for…”.

I’m glad you guys asked that question in the end! It’s such a tricky tricky thing “American History” because one has to consider the history of systemic racism, white heroism in American, and so much more. I can only speak for myself of course, as my expertise comes from experience; but yes, we were taught about thanksgiving but it was a manipulative truth (aka they way it was taught to me and generations before me, I’m 25, was a glorified story vs how we know it now) we learned that the pilgrims basically committed no atrocities towards the natives but offered only peace which is unfortunately untrue. They raped pillaged and murdered countless tribes and were by no means as godly as they are even portrayed here. So needless to say there is a large American generation that was taught a glorified version of our history that had since been corrected (now whether our nation has really done the work to reconcile with the native population from our choices in the past, highly debatable) lol Love watching your videos! Keep it up mates x

As of right now in there’s conversations in America as to whether this holiday is even appropriate in this day an age, knowing what we know now about early American Colonization. For instance ‘Christopher Columbus Day’ had been reformed to “Indigenous People’s Day” in acknowledgment of the atrocities he plagued on the original people of our nation. Thanksgiving, although it may keep its name in society has slowly evolved in meaning in the everyday American home. We don’t really focus on the pilgrims. Nor do we celebrate their arrival on this day. When I was In grade school we used to do arts and crafts, coloring picture of pilgrims and natives hugging and sharing turkey, something you probably wouldn’t see acceptable in a school setting today. The focus of thanksgiving has become “family” spending time with those you love and the friends you hold dear “Friendsgiving” lol try it!! It’s about being grateful and sharing your privileges with those who have less. It has a more unified message than historical one these days.

Very well said! Growing up on the reservation, we were taught the truth. We heard both sides of the story. It’s very unfortunate that it took so many generations to finally see that history is only told by the conquerors, not the perished. So much Native history is lost, and now what remains has been passed down all these years verbally, which historians total will not accept as factual events without documented evidence.

Many Americans don't know the true history of Thanksgiving, I will admit I only knew the basic watered down versions. Well that changed when my boyfriend and I met 15 years ago. He is Apache native American, so he taught me more on the Native perspective of it. He also lived and grew up in the South, I am from Ohio. We live together in Ohio, where we have celebrated what we call "Harvest Dinner" traditional Thanksgiving food mixed with traditional Native American Foods. We celebrate to give Thanks for each other and what we have. Being a gay couple we don't normally get that warm welcome from either side so we celebrate and give thanks for our life, love and little family (pets) we have started. Happy Thanksgiving to your beautiful family, and we look forward to seeing your first Thanksgiving Dinner.

@@tomcarl8021 Columbus' experience was absolutely impactful. So much so that it is easy to overplay it and make him not only a notable player, but seemingly the only one of any consequence. That slippery slope, and not his feat, is the point of contention for most people today.

@veemie8148 2 года назад
@Tom Carl People forget about influential explorers when they obsess over Columbus. He doesn't have the claim of first person from the old world to reach the Americas (or to cross the Atlantic), that was Leif Erikson. He doesn't have the claim of exploring the territory of North America, that was John Cabot. He doesn't have the claim of exploring the territory of South America, that was Amerigo Vespucci. Christopher Columbus was a fool of his time. He believed the world was smaller than it is, while others knew it was larger than that due to experiments done by the ancient Greeks. If the East actually was directly west from Europe like he believed, he would have foolishly died out at sea before getting there. He only survived due to luck. When he arrived in what he believed to be India, he committed acts of brutality against the natives. Not only is this morally disgusting, but stupid on his part. If it actually was India like he had believed it to be, this would have made trading relations (which was the entire point of his mission) terrible between Spain and those in the East. When the royalty heard of what he had done in Spain they were so revolted that he was thrown in a cell. Let's be honest, you don't care about European accomplishment. You only venerate Christopher Columbus because there's a tradition to do so, and because of his brutality.

As interesting as some of this is, I would encourage you to seek some histories of Thanksgiving from the indigenous perspective, as this is basically the sanitized version we were taught in school, but which is highly inaccurate. Many of us do not celebrate, but prefer to observe the day as a memorial for the ancestors who were slaughtered. A Thanksgiving feast was often celebrated after any successful raid or massacre against our peoples. One memorable one was when over 400 Pequot women, elderly, and children were burnt to death in their village while they slept overnight, as the men were already away on a mission to defend their land from the colonizers who were claiming it for themselves, often by murdering the people who already lived there. This video was about as accurate as the Disney Pocahontas movie (meaning not at all). Edit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OW0s8ToCyU8.html please take a gander at this to hear the story as told by the other side of the coin

I am a lifelong New Englander and also have family in Provincetown and other parts of the Massachusetts south shore. Though many of us are older with our own family gatherings now, when my nanas were alive one holiday would be at Little Nana’s house and one would be at Big Nana’s house. My Big Nana liked to cook more than Little Nana and because we are part Italian it was not uncommon to have lasagna with our turkey. In fact this year mom is making chicken Parmesan and lasagna and I am making dessert, oatmeal butterscotch cookies and apple pie. But we’ll make turkey for Christmas. I can’t wait to see your Thanksgiving results! It can be such a stressful time here with everyone running around, lines at airports, stores, supermarkets... crime goes up around this time... car accidents from people in a hurry... and the numerous animals left in the cold and alone at home for hours or days while we socialize... are just some of the more dismal aspects of an entirely too commercialized holiday here. But I hope you can take the best parts of this tradition without too much pressure🦃 and make sure to have that cold turkey sandwich on regular bread with miracle whip mayonnaise if you can get it... for me that’s also a must every year! But also remember the puppy when he’s waiting so patiently for you in the kitchen too...

This is a beautiful story of Thankgiving. Its just sad to think about how nicely the natives treated the pilgrims, just for them to slowly take over all of their land. For us, each extended family group (aunt & uncle, cousins, grandparents) would bring their own special dish, pie, green bean casserole, creamed onions, etc…. The family would all join hands before the meal and give thanks for all we had and for each other. Happy Thanksgiving NZ family!

The basic story of Thanksgiving that was taught for most of the 20th century was that the noble savages/Indians/Native Americans (depending on the dominant term of the time) welcomed the white men from beyond the sea as saviors and brought forth a great feast to welcome them to their lands. Realization of what a crock this was caused to a great backlash against the holiday. Much like Columbus Day, another story which was taught much different from the reality, but in that case the lack of holiday traditions and such has allowed it to either be redesignated by some as indigenous Peoples' Day, or ignored entirely. It is the only holiday, that I am aware of, where unions have voluntarily given up the once standard day off.

As usual someone has taken liberties so much to the extreme, that reality isn’t even recognizable. Too bad I cannot post in here! Or I would post the REAL Truth. What happened for REAL, and why Natives do NOT refer to the Slaughter of our brothers & sisters ..... as a day of Thanksgiving. That truth is conveniently left out of History, with a few exceptions. I have seen it ONCE talked about on the History Channel. Good for them, apparently Nobody watched in America ..... or they didn’t get the memo or care. Enjoy your Turkey 🦃 That’s what it’s really all about, if it were about God ..... this World 🌍 would be a BETTER place, not a continuously worse one. Right?! Most of my life was spent at my grandparents' home with my family, my aunts and uncles, cousins, and some dear family friends. We would often go to extended family's homes to share with them as well. The key is to remember why it is important to join together and to remember how thankful you are for the blessings and support in your life.
