Michigander here! The Great Lakes are incredible. I grew up in Kalamazoo, about an hour drive from Lake Michigan, so it was the primary swimming destination every summer. The larger three, Michigan, Huron, and Superior, look and feel like oceans. They are so big, they actually drastically affect weather. We get what's known as _lake effect_ storms, especially in the winter. They can dump a meter of snow in an afternoon. Also, it's known as the Wolverine state because it was once heavily populated with the elusive mustelid, the wolverine. They're actually not related to wolves in any way. The closest relatives are skunks, weasels, and badgers. But the name was also supposedly used by our neighbors to the southeast, Ohio, because of the behavior of citizens during a land dispute. Wolverines are very shy, but unbelievably angry and defensive when threatened.

As someone from Ohio, what you really need to do is coming to the US and get tickets to the Ohio State vs Michigan college football ball game. That is likely the biggest and oldest rivalry in all of US college football, and a guaranteed good time no matter who wins. I’ve been to a couple where my (OSU) team has won or lost, but either way you are front-row and center to the best and oldest rivalry in all of US college football! And if you happen to be in Ohio for such a match, an hour or so road trip from Columbus will take you to the Cincinnati area where you can experience the world famous Jungle Jims international market… look it up on RU-vid. I also recommend the USAF National museum if you are spending any time in Ohio. It is an amazing free experience for anyone in the area, that is highly recommend.

OG Michigander here. Yes, we are called Michiganders. You’ll love visiting Michigan, the Winter-Water Wonderland! Lifelong Michigander here. They tried at one point to change it to Michiganian, but it had been Michigander for so long and so much tradition, that we wouldn't use it, and they eventually gave up and went back to Michigander. Coney dogs are popular and a semi-state food because Southeast Michigan is the most populated area of the state and that's where they originated and because of the wars between the different styles. Where i grew up we were more likely to find a Greek chilli dog than a coney dog. The other semi-state food is the Upper Peninsula pasty. You really should try them sometime. Much more unique than a coney dog, and they have a great history with the wives of the miners wanting to provide their husbands with a warm, homemade, meal, so they'd make pasties in the morning, wrap them up in newspapers, and send them along so they could have a warm meal for lunch. ( If you don't know, a pasty is a meat and root vegetable turnover and pronounced with a short a as opposed to what strippers use pronounced with a long a ;) ). Another contender has always been Mackinaw island fudge. While it IS excellent, fudge, in general, can be found anywhere, and it's more of a tourist attraction, than something we get regularly. Michigan also has the Detroit style pizza, but again, in West Michigan, you're more likely to find Fricanos' pizza (which was the first pizza parlor in Michigan) which serves a style totally contrary to Detroit style, using a very thin crust. Michigan is very diverse. You have the large, urban centers, such as Detroit and surrounding areas, The middle of the state has diverse farmlands and orchards. Michigan is the largest producer of Montmorency cherries in the country (the red, tart kind), and Traverse City still hosts the annual cherry festival. We are also #2 or 3 in the country for apple production. West Michigan has Lake Michigan which draws many tourists, and is essentially an unsalted ocean without any of the dangerous creatures, as well as Sleeping Bear National park featuring great sand dunes. Or you can go to Silver Lake and go on a dune ride, where they take you in special vehicles made to ride the dunes. the state in general borders 4 of the five Great Lakes, which are great for fishing Salmon, trout, walleys, perch, etc. Or, you can go fishing, swimming, or boating, on any of the 11,000 inland lakes. (yes, 11,000). The Upper Peninsula has vast forrests, which are great for autum color tours ( as well as throughout the lower penisula) They also have produced more mineral wealth than the California gold rush, supplying 90% of the countries copper in the 1800's. Since I know there are no wolverines in NZ, I suggest you check them out. The wolverine has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the documented ability to kill prey many times larger than itself.

Michigander here, the 5 great lakes can be remembered by using the word HOMES - Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Superior - the 1st letter of each lake equal the word HOMES. You did such a great job, Atlanta! I am a Michigan vegetarian but you definitely got the 2 most important parts of the coney dog correct: the texture and the mess! Michigan (Detroit) is also known for it’s deep dish pizza that rivals anyone else’s. We grow more than 75% of the US tart cherry crop, we are the home of the hot fudge cream puff, have immigrants influences with the pasty and the paczki (pronounced punch-key). We have a Chinese food item credited to us (almond boneless chicken). We also grow almost all of the blueberries in the US. We also grow a ton of peaches, potatoes, apples and sugar beets. We have so many immigrants from all over that have brought so much amazing food with them. We also have amazing wines that are grown and made here. Michigan is one of the best kept secrets in the US. You guys seem to like the outdoors a lot and there are very few states as beautiful as ours. Can’t wait to subscribe to Atlanta’s cooking show 😊. Our Great Lakes are more like oceans. They create their own weather. There are more than 6000 known shipwrecks in the Great Lakes system and approximately 500-700 that we don’t know about yet. I love my state. Hugs from Michigan ❤️

Pasty is pronounced past--ee. Pasty like glue it is not. It is a meat pie folded in half and if made at home can have meat and veg of choice, sour cream/cheese/gravy/meat drippings added to meat and the crust is folded over, vents cut in top crust and baked until crust is golden brown. Always made with cooked meat, not raw. The crust can be anything from light and flaky to hard and heavy. It is personal choice but great after a cold day hunting game in this fab state. We are more green forest than city developments, I think(?). Or doing any of the hundred other outdoor activities available in the water, winter wonderland.

If you come to Michigan, do it the first weekend of September and walk the Mackinaw Bridge. It really gives you a great view of two of the Great Lakes and then take a fairy (boat) ride to Mackinaw Island and if you can, stay the night in the Grand Hotel on the Island. Also, watch the movie "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeves. Only transportation allowed on the island is Horse and Carriage. Michigander here!

That's a beautiful hot dog. To make it a West Virginia hot dog instead of a Michigan coney dog, all you need to do is add one additional ingredient as a topping at the end: cole slaw (cheese is optional)! The cole slaw will provide a cool, creamy finish to help smooth out the strength of that spice. P.S. They're called Michiganders!

Wolverines are native to Michigan. They are large, vicious members of the Weasel family. The University of Michigan's sports teams are the Wolverines. During the American Civil War, Major General George A. Custer (yes, that Custer) commanded the "Wolverine Brigade", the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 7th Michigan Cavalry. Famously, during the Battle of Gettysburg, when he was a Brigadier, Custer yelled "Come on you Wolverines!" during his charge that broke the Confederate Cavalry of J.E.B. Stuart. This contributed greatly to the Union victory.

TIP AND HACK: Hack: To get rid of the extra grease after browning ground beef (AKA mince), put some paper towels between tongs and swipe the paper towels around the bottom of the pan. This will absorb the grease. You not only won’t have to lift the pan and try to drain the grease without spilling some of the beef out of the pan but it’s also one less dish to wash. Tip: Spices bloom better in fat. So it’s better to add the spices to your to the pan (make a hole in the middle of your beef), mix the spices together and allow your spices to cook briefly. It shouldn’t take long, just cook until you can smell the spices, ten seconds, or so. Then, mix the spices into your beef. After that, add your water.

Haven't watched yet, but I'm happy you finally got to my home state! There's so much amazing stuff in Michigan that people aren't aware of. So many amazing places to go to and explore. And we also have a few staple foods that people don't talk about much. But the coney dog is definitely one of the more famous foods in the state! If you ever go to Michigan, you have to go to Mackinac Island (pronounced like Mackinaw) and try the famous fudge there. And get a pasty while you're in the Upper Peninsula! It's a meat and potato pie. Might sound a bit boring, but if you got to the right place, it's sooooooo good. If you want the one of a kind autumn colors then come October/November. Just depends if you wanna swim lol. Start as you land in Detroit, head to Lafayette Coney island/American Coney Island(literally attached in the same building), head to Grand Rapids for a brewery tour amd enjoy amazing food. Then head to Frankemuth(best time to visit is December btw) enjoy Bronners and fresh fudge. Then head to Traverse City, check out the winery's, then if your feelin frisky, cross the bridge to the Upper peninsula, and enjoy millions of untouched acres of forest and lakes and rivers. Also, the countries least visited, yet most revisited national park is here in Michigan as well.

Glad you all liked our dogs! Wish you could have had some Koegels hot dogs for them, that's the biggest thing that makes a coney proper. There's a long standing debate in MI not only about what was the original coney like you touched on in the video, but also with Detroit vs. Flint style coneys. Detroit being a wet chili, and Flint being a dry chili (like your sauce was). As a native Flintstone, of course ours are the best. ;) But don't take my word for it! When you come visit, make sure you try both Lafayette and American in Detroit, and then take a drive up to Flint to try a couple of ours as well. Angelo's is considered the original flint style, but their reputation has fallen in the last decade, so in my opinion Starlite is the place to go! Whichever you get and enjoy, a couple notes on the coney: They're not quite as spicy as I think the recipe you made was, and a "with everything" coney is just sauce, mustard, and onion. Cheese isn't an option when you get them here, though I think the addition to yours was probably very tasty regardless! Cheers all, have a fantastic day! :D

Yay! I've been waiting for Michigan! I'm so glad you enjoyed the dogs. About Michigan being called the Wolverine State, I'm sorry if someone has mentioned this. I've heard of a couple reason why. The 1st was a war between Michigan and Ohio over who owned the city of Toledo. The people of Ohio were calling the Michiganders wolverines because of the viciousness. I've also heard that it was called that because wolverines roamed the state long ago and fur traders would call the pelts "Michigan Wolverines", which is currently what The University of Michigan and their mascot is known by. These are just things I've heard living here my whole life. I could be completely wrong and if I am, it's something fun to think about anyway.
