I created this video with the RU-vid Video Editor ( / editor )
New Zealand Native Plant - Kiekie (Ureure) Ureure means the fruit, sadly it is not ripe to eat until Autumn. It is then eaten like the pineapple. The Flower bract is called Tawhara and it flowers in Spring - hence I was a little bit late catching them also. Tawhara is one of the nicest New Zealand Bush Foods.

Hey awesome vids bro!..just found your channel, nice work + yup also HIGHLY recommend the book 'A Field Guide To The Native Edible Plants Of New Zealand by Andrew Crowe' its awesome and small enough to have in ya backpack / out on the missions, must have. Yeah the KieKie - nemesis of the bush basher, drainer of pints of blood over the years, death by a thousand cuts, etc!... sheesh they have super sharp leaves, BUT (like most cutty grasses) they are only sharp when push one way / down the leave towards the centre - you can hang onto them and even pull down the leaves towards you and no cuts possible.. good to know most people avoid them but you can grab them and hang of them if ya know what ya doing. keep up the geat work and dont worry about people bellyaching about your style / pauses bro, its just you and the way you do it and the info is spot on. sweetbix Matty T

Nice video, I haven't gotten to taste these yet, looking forward to the day xD... an easy way to pronounce Kiekie is to say 'key-air key-air' as you would normally read in english key has the same sound as 'ki' and air (depending on your native accent, leave the r silent) is a close approximation of 'e', key-year key-year or key-yeah key yeah would probably work too the 'ki ki' part is perfect, just need to ad the 'e e' ;)

@@purplehaze8079 which places are those? Just interested as Ive never heard it called Kīkī... there is a very similar plant, a close relative in Hawai'i that has mango/apricot coloured flowers that they call 'ie 'ie where the glottal stop replaces our K.

hi Glen. can you tell us is it the flower you eat or the ripened fruit or both? and how do you eat it cooked or raw. Cheers

Hello Andy, when you see that the flowers and the base of the leaves are white, then you can eat the white leaves. The leaves only turn white when the plant is flowering. You can recognise these leaves easily as they become wider at the base / bottom of the leaves. The flowers are also white and look somewhat like a fingers pointing up in the middle of the white leaves. Don't eat the flowers while they are white, just the white leaves should be eaten. However; once the flowers become fully ripe just before winter, then you can eat the inside of them. The flowers start of white, then turn green and very hard outside skin feels like the outside of a pineapple, slightly rough and prickly. Then the green hard outer skin will turn from green to a pinkish tinge. The hard outer skin will become very soft, you can now peel this pinkish skin off and eat the inside of the fruit. So the parts that we eat are the large white parts of the leaves that surround the white flowers, these are found in spring when most other plants are also flowering. To eat the fruit, we wait for the white flowers to turn into a fruit and ripen, the fruit turns from white to green then to a pinkish tinge and we can then eat the inside of the fruit when fully ripe. If the pinkish tinged skins can peel off easily, it is fully ripe. The fully ripe fruit is found in the middle of the leaves and found at the end of autumn to the beginning of winter. As a food - the white leaves are the nicest part to eat. Hope this helps.

This book here may help explain things better, its one of my favorite books: "A practical field guide to New Zealand's native edible plants" By Andrew Crowe. Highly recommended.
