We don't take note if these $#@!% we let it matters on the field if these pundits are to stupid to realize that the Boks game against the Irishman was a real fake game of what the Boks are capable of then they shouldn't make comments, and with a different referee on the day the score would have been a different story.The Irishman got away with murder just listen to Nick Mallet and wake up.

Indeed. Mils is highly rated as a commentator in South Africa. Sadly, the other two are not. Oh, and just as a side: one of the reasons the Oceanians (once known as the All Blacks) is facing an uphill (future) battle is because their three academies (Tonga, Samoa and Fiji) have now gone solo with increasingly spectacular results. The islanders are now finding much more lucrative opportunities in Europe (and in their national teams) and will undoubtedly find New Zealand (and the All Blacks) far less attractive in years to come.

Distances mate. Distances. A round trip from Dublin to Paris is 1 560 km. Round trip from Johannesburg to Auckland is 24 376 km. And that is the reason why South African teams always found it hard to win in New Zealand. It is well known (and scientifically proven) that travelling east is faaaaaaaar more taxing than travelling west.

That game between the Boks and Ireland was a 50/50 game that could easily have gone the other way. The top 4 sides are incredibly close to eachother and this will make the Qurterfinals really intense. It's honestly impossible to predict who will win between SA vs France and ABs vs Ireland.

@@agape777I don't agree with you on that one. The AB did beat the Boks in the battle of the Southern Hemisphere. AB lost to the Boks in the warm up match before the WC. I still feel the AB are more superior and you can only write them off at your own peril. Ireland have to go past the AB to win this WC I feel. Good as they are I still feel the real test is yet to come in the form of the AB.

Rugby in the professional era still growing in ireland but still behind Gaelic football, hurling and soccer...seems like no matter what ireland do, taking into account their playing pool, these guys struggle to give the team and indeed irfu, the credit they deserve..lesson for irfu, with similar competition player pool wise, is to look at what's happening to the great Australia. Past winners. If it can happen to them it could happen to us. Really important to keep promoting the game here.

Absolute bollocks, Irish soccer is terrible the league is one of the worst in Europe and can’t even get into Europe, Gaelic and hurling is not even a professional sport people don’t do it for a full time job, Rugby and teams like Leinster dominate the European scene at times and is without a doubt the best sport and team we have and have had for years

It seemed to us South Africans that we weren't besotted with winning the Irish game because we realize that the RWC is a marathon and going all out in a pool game risks players getting injured or red-carded. There was some suggestions that we would prefer France in the quarter finals. Where things stand now, 3 of the 4 semi-finalists lost a pool game and of the 4 teams that one all their pool games, only one survives. This seems to show that winning all pool games is not the be all and end all.

Not saying that South Africa aren’t still favourites but they are vulnerable under pressure, we saw that against The All Blacks in Auckland and now the Irish. Test Matches are won & lost up front and often from the resulting penalties. Converting that dominance into points is the key. Richie Mccaw often spoke about it coming down to the team that takes their opportunities being the ones that come out on top.

Not taking anything away from Ireland, they are playing fantastic rugby and deserve their current praise and position, however, how many times did a seemingly unbeatable Allblack team come up short in the world cup knock out phase? Pressure, weight of expectation, lack of experience in knock out rugby and a 'in game turning of the tide' such as a card, the run of play or just the best day from the opposition and the 'favourites' are out. People love to knock the ABs (tall poppy syndrome) especially in these last few years, but they've been there and done it. There are plenty of shocks to come in this world cup and something tells me the quarter finals with all of the above in mind will produce the biggest shock(s) of all

I can see why NZ pundits want Wayne Barnes. Ever since Barnes very poor performance in 2007 1/4 final game against France, Barnes has been played by the All Blacks and hes awarding more penalties for NZ than any other ref and the opposite can be said for Ireland. On average hes awarded 2 more penalties than any referee per game against Ireland against any nation. Not hard see why they would want that ref. Complete joke if both sides get out of group and hes chosen

Anyone opposing the ABs, I wouldn't be too overly confident ... We have been inconsistent but have turned it on under tons of pressure against some top teams ... Though, if we are to beat Ireland (which we are capable of but I don't think we will) we won't win the semi. We've become a bit like France used to be in my mind ... Brilliant one week, average the next ... If we do lose to Ireland, fair play to them ... Been exceptional the last few years so it'll be well deserved and a first semi final will be amazing for them. But, I def would not count out the ABs ... Just got to see what happens on the day but Ireland are looking good and good luck to them. Though please win ABs haha ... Oh, that is if we get passed Italy haha ...

Well, you definitely did Italy good, Mate, I've always said it, Ireland are not World Cup pedigree... We are just too bloody small. We fight well as underdogs and get crucial wins at unimportant times, but man, knockout rugby just isn't our thing. I could be wrong, but we always seem to crack when our squad and ideals are tested at knockout level. Tournaments and shots to nothing are great, we go hell for leather, but we were never conquerors, we have endemic impostor syndrome please god I'm wrong, Eire Abu!

Correct about the competition. Munster ( Irelands best team ) play a lot of high level European games throughout the year as well as the 6 nations tournament for most of their players.

Lost 1st test to NZ and come back stronger won the series. Lost a game in 6 nations to France came back next year and won the grandslam. 28 wins from 30 tells you all you need to know about this ireland sides mentality.

While they will certainly be determined to change their record, the thought will still be there as a slight distraction. Not writing them off at all, just pointing out the obvious.

I'm a rugby fan but not in the slightest someone who knows the game to analyse it. That being said; the AB's will have a chance to knock Ireland out of the tournament. But wouldn't that be a disappointment, considering how the Irish totally owned the AB's on the tour, and how SA destroyed the AB's not too long ago? The world cup final deserves the best teams to play in it, and atm those teams are Ireland and either France or SA. Don't get me wrong i love NZ rugby, in a sense they represent what rugby has been about for a century, but the thought of them eliminating one of those gargantuan teams who played the other night seems rather disheartening.

In any case losing line outs to a team that's actually good at winning opposition line outs is not even in the same league as making kickable conversions. Having said all that, Ireland were still very impressive. To defend the way they did is championship type stuff. For me that is the take away.

Ireland's forward pack are going to run through us. Our defence has been absolute shit since Wayne Smith left. Fingers crossed for the boys (NZL) though. New Zealand as a nation would much rather loose to Ireland than to France, South Africa or England. Everyone i have talked to has been cheering for Ireland for decades and if they beat us our household will be cheering for them all they way to the finals.

I'm Irish, to the absolute core, we are flying yes, but no way not for one second will I say well win the world cup, hope we do there's 2 things, 1 Scotland are still in with a shout and won't be simple I expect us to win it but will be tough, 2 New Zealand, their quiet and their a team to be feared, France beat them but they poked the bear, I don't fear France I think Ireland have their number all day long, but New Zealand are different gravy.

Ireland were kicking for the side line when they should have been kicking for points, and visa/versa with South Africa….One would wonder if some of those decisions by both teams were on purpose.

Ireland were kicking tactically so as to force SA to start building play from the back which sucked life out of the SA game. The type of game SA like to play is very tight in defence and then pushing their opposition back through a very intensive pressure game. Ireland never allowed the natural SA game to get off the ground.

@@Art-is-craft In regards to Ireland, I was referring to the early penalties that were kicked into touch past South Africa’s 22. It was obvious Ireland were intending to go for try’s via mauls, or were going to run the ball and pressure play up the middle trying to suck defenders In and then passing out wide to score. Ireland knowing that South Africa have great line out/Maul defense, coupled with their line out misfiring makes one wonder why they didn’t kick for those points….Seems to amateurish of Ireland to keep kicking for the line out considering. You could also argue that Ireland left at least 9 points on the field due to those decisions. In regards to South Africa, I was referring to the penalties missed at goal in the second half. South Africa knowing they didn’t have a good kicker and had more weight/size in their pack, should have kicked those penalties into touch and went for the line out/Maul, which more than likely would have scored them a couple of try’s if they had done so. You could also argue that they left more than 9 points on the field from those missed penalties.

@@noelbyrne8735 Ireland did not kick for points because the knew that would allow SA to have a higher pitch position to build from. Ireland wanted to keep that ball deep in SA territory. The primary reason to do that is due to SA not having a culture in their game of building playing from their backs. The SA back line is most dangerous when SA play high pressing game inside the oppositions half.

I think Ireland were pressing hard for early try’s as they often do, but I’m surprised a curious as to why they continued with the line outs, especially after missing the first two . Very unlike Ireland to turn down so many opportunities to get points on the board early on.

All this was was a positioning game....blow it out your back end Jeff. The rugby world couldn't stop talking this game up, This was a monumental game. South Africa caved. And the All Blacks have a mountain to climb with that 'fire in their belly' if they think they could beat Ireland or South Africa based on current form.

As a Boks supporter, I am actually concerned about the AB’s at the moment. Mills says they have the fire power to beat IRE, which is true, but they havent fired for a few games now. I actually thought they were hurt after the SAvNZ game at Twickenham and they are going to smash the French, which they didn’t do. They have lost 5 of 8 games vs IRE since 2016. I really don’t see the AB beating the Irish at the moment which is sad, there must be something wrong in the camp.

It's possible neither of these two teams would make it to the final. France and NZ are contenders in their own right. Wales and England are building nicely, are on the right side of the draw and historically over perform at world cups. Fiji and Argentina can cause upsets. It's tournament rugby not a test series so you only have one go at the opposing team come finals time. You have to be at 100 percent to win. If you're off by just a bit then you're cooked and there's no tomorrow to have another go so the best team don't always win - something we NZ fans have learnt the hard way!

World cup rugby is different. Rankings don't mean shit. Boks have never been ranked 1 coming into the 3 cups they won. Ireland doesn't have a world cup reputation. Only for known as choking under big pressure games , not hating on Ireland but this Boks game was there big test in world cup competition. They did well and now can they advance further than ever ? I think New Zealand rugby will struggle to recover going forward. They are now isolated from global rugby, what Super Rugby offered was tours and strong competition. In 2025 South Africa will leave the Rugby Championship and join the 6 nations. There's no will from South Africa to rejoin the South and we are looking to expand into other markets as our game needs to grow! Be realistic now, Australia needs to make a real 180 as do Argentina Japan and the islands in order to have a league going forward... we talking a few years and alot of commitment from all parties. Without competition NZ is going nowhere!

URC, Champions Cup, Six Nations are all super competitive compared to whats on offer for New Zealand right now. Have you ever been to NZ? Auckland (NZ's largest city) has the largest Pacific island population in the world. Many of the players of Pacific island heritage are second or third generation NZers or immigrated to NZ with their families at a young age and played all or most of their rugby in NZ. That's like saying all of England's black athletes and boxers are poached from Africa and all of NZ's white players are poached from Europe. Even the Samoan and Tongan sides are full of NZ born players and coaches. NZ's deputy Prime Minister is also of Tongan descent.

As great as the game between us and South Africa was neither team are infallible. France can turn over South Africa even without DuPont and New Zealand could put 30 points on Ireland. Those two quarter finals are gonna be huge because the divide is so small. All 4 teams are at the pinnacle of the sport.
