Typical of our government to give away an amazing part of our history.but I’m glad it’s remembered on your channel.if they found it back then you never know what could be found now.
Hi Guys! Cool bit of NZ history! I've been to Ross and panned for gold in that creek back in 1993. we got 11 grams in 5 days. in the Ross museum there should still be a picture of the 2 rings we made out of that, the rest of the gold I still have in a small bottle at home today. Cheers!! Alex
Thanks a lot bro! Awesome, 11 grams in 5 days is very good! We went there once but had absolutely NO luck at all, is all the gold on the bedrock there? Nice one I’ll see if I can have a look if we are there again! Thanks for watching!

Thanks a lot bro! Lol yeah I was like WAIT WHAT YOU GOT 100OZ nugget NICE! And then read the weight was different bit XD, nice one. Thanks a lot for watching!
Thanks for the history of the honourable Roddy nugget Sluicers. Its very important to keep our history alive, especially when gold and gold prospecting is the favourite hobby of many of us. Perhaps you could do a few more vids about historical gold sites and equipment - the stamping batteries found in gold areas always fascinate me - how did they get the heavy batteries to the site - how did they get the ore to the battery - how rich was the ore. The old steam engine up Larry's creek near Reefton would make a great story too plus the fact they dug the channel under the river. Stuff of legends. Cheers
I could use a few of those! The area I work in California had a 54 pound nugget, several 20 pounders, and not too far a 194 pound mass of gold in quartz! Biggest I found was 8.6 oz.
@@nhragold1922 Holy smokes man watta rush that must have been 8.6 is a incredible hunk of yellow I'm a newbie & nobody to go with, I'm still working on my 1st nugget up here in the Pacific Northwest but just drool over chunky gold of any size lol kudos & happy prospecting!!!
New Zealands largest nugget was actually found up the Lyle! It was 126 ounces. It was found 6 inches below the surface! It's well documented.. Ross is not known for large nuggets! This one the roddy nugget was made in wax.. it's well documented your won't find anything in Ross over 5 ounces
@@SouthWestNz Yes there are rumors of a larger nugget in Lyell and I firmly believe that’s probably the case, but there are no official records of it. And no this one isn’t made of wax, having talked to people that witnessed the time it came out, it was most definitely real, it wouldn’t have been given to the royal family if it was fake. Unless the fellas that found the roddy faked it prior by making the nugget but back in that day I really doubt it.
Fascinating wee place. Used to drive through there a lot not thinking a lot of it but I stopped there one day and what a wee gem of a town. So much history and some nice walking tracks. Great view from the cemetery. Well worth a visit.
Liked, shared and commenting. I’m making a fist. That’s a big nugget. I understand governing powers and their not wise decisions. I’m in New York USA. And any gold n silver we find we r supposed to give to the state (greedy [exploitive deleted]).
Yeah, the state/country rules in most places are exceptionally greedy and selfish around gold, it’s very disappointing the things we have lost and what we can and technically can’t do! Cheers
Lol no me neither bro, I could hardly continue working after our nugget 1/400th of the size, let alone something like that. Thanks so much for watching :)!
I loved hearing about this when I was working down Ross wow absolutely amazing find. I can't believe how deep the Ross lake is to absolute stunning out there.
@@TheSluicers I know a fair bit but I am always trying to figure out more, most of my knowledge comes from Papers past and locals in the area, if you put in "Longwood Arethusa" or "Longwood gold" into papers past a lot comes up about it, I was just asking if you knew anything about it in hopes that you might know something that I might not, I am always tying to figure out more about it because google seems to have very limited knowledge of it which is a shame.
Cheers, I have heard of that but I believe it was a fake, I looked into it and doesn't look like real gold and if it was truly the biggest it wouldve got far far more attention. (Oh and I just read one of the articles and says April fools day joke). Would have been legendary but sadly not real.
In a way yes, although it did still bring a lot of attention to the country and the rushes over doubled the population, and once NZ was declared independent for a long time Kiwis were the richest $ per capita average in the world, but yes definitley a shame so much was lost. Thanks so much for watching!!!
@@TheSluicers im in nz always wanted to do some mining prospecting could never find much info where to go and the legal parameters etc .what about black sands mining will you do any videos ?
@@nissmoguy Awesome, paydirt.co.nz shows all the public sites and claim areas but it’s never too big of a deal if you are accidentally off by a bit as long as your not on someone else’s claim. Sure if you are referring to blacksanding on the beaches we actually have done that a few times just didn’t get any good footage, we do have a trip planned later this year to give that another shot and will let you know when the vids up :)!
