I think the role of the news media, especially the trusted public broadcasters, should not be underestimated in New Zealand. They have consistently reported reputable sources.

such an important point. In the UK, it has taken almost a year to have any from of "unpolitical" public service guide to prevention that is getting any form of "clear". Mostly, it has been "politicians" giving advice, or scientists chosed to say what the politicians tell them to say/ say the politicians wish. Having listened widely, it s clear that even some "scientists" are very happy to be disreputable. Usually they work for drug companies / vaccine manufacturers. So sad about Europe, and so amazed by the many countries around the West Pacific who have done a great job, to show that it can be done, as China has. AUS. Thailand, Taiwan, and so on.

Since then it was announced that in 2020 nz had slight growth and economically exceeded all expectations. It shows that a public health response is also an economic response.

Yes, I don't believe size or localion has anything to do with it. It was a decision we made, mainly due to Michael Baker and his team I believe. they saw it was not like the flue when we had around 100 cases and looked at what others had done and how they were going. They saw Taiwan was doing really well, had only a few deaths and their proximity to the origin in china so decided to do what they did. Taiwan has 5 X the population and 9 deaths. I was shocked to hear that UK was thinking of closing it's borders a few weeks back, if we left our borders open for the last year we would be in the same position! A bit like "closing the stable door after the horse has bolted? Some have been saying, "but NZ is an island!", so is uk. "NZ has a small population", places with higher population have more people to test and trace. Any country can do this any time, and if the world does it at the same time, where is the virus after that. Problem is the will (or won't!) to do it!

Kia ora team. I can't stress enough that having a decisive government that was clear in its communication created essential 'buy-in' from the nation. We were dealing with something that, on this scale, had never been faced before. This was stressed to us and the entire country brought in. Kia kaha Jacinda. (and by the way. I'm traditionally an opposition supporter!)

As u all well know it was a concerted effort between the scientists, clear communication from the govt, and compliance of the people, without those 3 things it wouldn't have worked, it has NOTHING to do with the small size and isolation of our country

The reason for our success is leadership clear and simple. Factors like size and location play a part for sure but if our leaders hadn't of gotten on to it as quickly as they did our road would not have been so pleasant. The first thing they did was ask the people that know the most what to do. Secondly they devised a game-plan from those recommendations and thirdly they got NZer's up to speed. The world was at war and if your leaders weren't donning helmets you were in trouble. The decisiveness of our leaders in the early days to act was what did it. I watched in disbelief as Trump blew his chance of re-election by showing . I mean, he had a golden opportunity of leading his country through the crisis like some of their greatest presidents had done. Instead he showed how indecisive, petty and ignorant he really was. Not leadership material at all. The U.K fared no better, Boris looked like a deer in the headlights from the start and was totally incapable of committing to anything for fear of political repercussion. The Europeans showed how farcical the EU actually was by getting tribal at the very time when unity would have saved them. So we were lucky because we had a labour government in with a leader young and still idealistic enough to make the hard calls. I doubt a national government wouldn't have been playing politics instead of taking quick measures, they always have been politicians first. I recall the "is it okay for politicians to lie" question where Jacinda said No! Judith Collins said 'It's occasionally going to be one of those things where you can't tell everything about something'. Jacinda has shown her savvy over the past year and as history will eventually show, the right person in the right place at the right time.

Trump was never capable of management decisions, his reality was a complete fantasy. Now he will back up his narcissism and cry about being a victim of election fraud, fraud he couldnt find in 2016 election.

Yes, Trump fumbled and dropped the ball. Now there are reports that the Bidens administrations open border policy is allowing migrants who later tested positive for covid into the USA without having first set up any form of MIQ facilities for these migrants to transition through.

I think this is a misread. PM Ardern is a very good communicator and has done well to explain the plan in a clear and concise way. Also accepting and holding fast to an elimination plan against international norm is laudable. However some of her political opposites were promoting harder responses 3 weeks earlier and pushing tracing from the Taiwanese experience too. There was also some poor guidelines and management around quarantine facilities, and the minister of health was all at sea. In short, better and earlier competence would have reduced outbreak chance considerably. We whistled through a lot of the events with good luck rather than good management, and as pointed out by Mr Town Kiwis by-and-large were prepared to move with the plan, even those like me who dislike restrictions on movement and assembly. Lastly it's hard to say how well elimination strategy would go in other countries, as expressed by Mr Town from the 12min mark

@@angelaford2989 Jacinda has no political opponents. The National party failed to contain a Virus outbreak in the Cow population when they were the Government, in fact the Bovis virus was spreading, they sure had no way to call for any harder COVID19 before Jacinda's response, at best its just wishful thinking. I voted for Jacinda and more than happy with her decisions.

@@greggiles7309 I wasn't thinking of anyone in National when I wrote that, but rather David Seymour, who to his credit did make those calls early. On reflection saying 'some of her political opponents' is probably overstatement.

New Zealand is small enough to be able to act agilely in response to this particular crisis. I can see where our natural isolation and small size could be a disadvantage, ie geological events (earthquake, psunami, etc)

We were all quite surprised to have either zero or almost zero cases of flu. Seems logical in hindsight, that the measures we took to minimise the spread of covid would also work for flu but, we hadn't really thought about it at the time.
