Shout out to that one cicada who's audio-bombing basically the entire video with the intrepid zeal of Tāne-mahuta! You're definitely dead by now, but your song lives and has been heard by over a quarter of a million people. So, regardless of how many cicada-ladies it won you in life, in death it has won you immortality both on RU-vid and in my heart. ❤️

Stand on Cambridge Terrace - Kent Terrace, at the Ghuznee St intersection, and look either way to see 4 raised beaches. The site your standing on, was in the late 1800's, a shallow harbour, capable of accomadateing, tall sailing ships. Were it still a harbour, one would be underwater, by several feet, at the first rise, deeper on the rest of them. Pity this video didn't include the South Island leg of the Kahurangi subduction zone, which ruptured about 8 years back, lifting several miles of coastline in the process, plus uplifts & horozontal moves inland. All of the Earthqaukes, along this subduction zone, tend to generate big movements. This last nearly 10 days, there have been several 4.3 + qaukes, and a couple over 5.4, all off shore from East Cape. I'm waiting for the next big one, which moves Wellington.

Is there any data showing or is it possible this could happen again. First hand info about the Mirchison quake was shared to me by an elderly woman (80 yrs old in 2007 who was still active & very alert) was 7yrs old at the time this happened. Her parents owned a farm in the valley. Still vivid in her memory she talked about watching the mountains lifting, the farm buildings fall into a crack in the earth & her family scrambling for safety. Not meaning to scare... What I'm asking is. Could ' coupling ' of the Australian and pacific plates, at the bottom of the north islands lower east coast. Could that be the reason area's of the coastline are rising out of the water, and the pressure caused by the 'stuck' plates is yet to be released. Also would the kaikoura earthquake, and the subsequent lifting of area's of coast during the event. Be futher evidence to support 'Coupling pressure'?

The New Zealand plate boundary fault can actually be seen in the South Island, for example at Gaunt Creek. Awesome, I think whats happening in Iceland right now is a similar event. I can't help but wonder how plates open up and new land is born.
@sigisoltau6073
@sigisoltau6073 3 года назад
Well thing is, Iceland sits on a Mid Ocean Ridge where two plates move apart. In New Zealand there's a subduction zone where one plate goes beneath another one. With Iceland when these plates move apart magma moves up between the cracks. Under Iceland there's also a hotspot, or mantle plume, like the one under Hawaii, which supplies additional magma. In a subduction zone, as one plate moves downward, it heats up and starts melting. Some of the minerals that contain water melt, and the water reduces the melting point of the surrounding rock, producing magma. This magma is less dense than the rock around it so it rises until it meets the crust. If there are cracks in the crust this magma continues to rise until it either erupts at the surface as a volcano, or it stops because the cracks stop, and eventually cools.

Volcanic and seismic activity seems to be constant lately , just in a single video i saw several volcanoes erupting in October . Whatever scientists might say we all know very well that nature is unpredictable , we can only study something afterwards and make conclusions based on research so far but nobody can tell for sure how big the next catastrophe will be or where it will happen . Of course is good to know as much as possible about faults and activity but only God can save us in the end . May God bless you all and keep you safe ! happy new Year

You only think it's 'constant lately' cause you haven't been paying attention, and it's a new field of study; we didn't even have Plate Tectonic theory before 1960s, and that's only 60 years ago. It was us though. "The underarm bowling incident of 1981 took place on 1 February 1981, when Australia played New Zealand in a One Day International cricket match, the third in the best-of-five final of the 1980-81 World Series Cup, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.[1] With one ball of the final over remaining, New Zealand required a six to tie the match. To ensure that New Zealand did not get the runs they needed, the Australian captain, Greg Chappell, instructed his bowler (and younger brother), Trevor Chappell, to deliver the last ball to Brian McKechnie underarm, along the ground." Your words are invalid

Hehehe, We actually haven't seen much lava in New Zealand, that's the nature of these volcanoes and no we don't have houses near any live volcanoes. The White Island volcano that recently erupted is an uninhabited island about 100+ miles out to sea, an adventure tourist destination, sadly with these deaths, not any more.

The reason for seismic activity in New Zealand is the sheer mass of many millions of sheep and cattle weighing the North and South Island down into the Kermadec-Tonga subduction zone. To offset this, the NZ government encourages many of their residents to reside in Australia, but the Liberal Australian government uncaringly sends them back. 🙄
