The extraordinary beauty of New Zealand is vital to its identity. Indigenous Maori view themselves as guardians of the earth here. Art Wolfe photographs images of modern Maori artists who carry their tales on their faces in the form of sacred tattoos and use their art to communicate their sense of guardianship in episode seven. Then he travels to New Zealand's untamed South Island, where he will learn about the natural history of this pristine and well-preserved island nation.
Art Wolfe's Travels to the Edge takes a look at some of the world's most distant locations. Explore breathtaking glaciers, spectacular deserts, vibrant jungles, and majestic mountain peaks.

I'm happy to be living and born in a country that is generally a peaceful, clean and naturally beautiful place and environment. We do definitely have our problems of course the skyrocket housing market, our river waterways need a bit of looking after to name some. But we could be a whole lot worse my family originally came from Philippines and there most people can't really have ready access to clean, safe environments to enjoy or live in cause it is not taken care of enough by the government especially. Not to mention most places like a decent clean beach are not free for everyone to enjoy. Where you have to go resorts to experience clean, nice beaches for example most of the time.

all or most nations are sustainable, right now. it just requires adaptation. what we have now is only sustained by lots of effort, millions of people running around all day to help keep the shape of things as they are. if people stopped it would not be sustained. we work against nature and push custard up a hill. leave the custard. there are other pudding type ingredients

By sustainable I suppose you mean energy and agriculture sustainable? That is a lofty goal but the downside of that is it takes a lot of carbon energy to create green sustainability. That footprint negates all the energy saved in the future by the green revolution. Solar only works if you live in a very sunny place. If that is New Zealand, fine. Wind only works in windy places, if that is New Zealand, fine. But just know that it must be paid for ahead unlike carbon which is not. Not every place in the world can do this so if New Zealand can, more power to you. It is just not for everyone like Germany for instance. In addition, if you plan on going electric for your cars, trucks, tractors, ETC., the natural resources to make those items are mainly sourced in Russia, Ukraine, and China, all of which are going away. Do you plan to be sustainable in agriculture? What are you going to do for fertilizer? Unless your farmland is extremely rich in nutrients, you will need fertilizer. The main source of fertilizer is Russia, Ukraine, and China. Do you make your own? Do you produce Potash? Natural gas? Nitrogen? Better rethink the green revolution. I think you mean environmental sustainability? Nature is way ahead of you there. But to keep the country pristine as nature intended is the challenge. Do you use gas-powered vehicles? Do you generate electricity with gas or oil? Do you use biodegradable plastics? Do you have herds of cows that generate methane and release it into the atmosphere? It will be a challenge to keep things the way they are now. Good luck.

VERY LAUGHABLE HOW THE MEDIA EXPRESS LIES AS THE TRUTH.......New Zealand under the indigenous people was paradise. The natives had more time for socialization than doing anything else since food, water, energy and medicine was available for free in nature,.That is real sustainability. Forget about the current system created by the occupiers in which the real custodians of the land and resources (the natives) have been reduced to beggars on welfare
@karentorkar8256
@karentorkar8256 2 года назад
Successive Govts have made life very hard for many, and particularly now the young. According to the History books, life for the NZ indigenous people was particularly hard when moa ran out, and particularly, up to 1840 when the treaty was signed. Demographics describe the situation clearly through those years. Life was hard and short. Far from what is being taught these days. Ask the early missionaries of the 1820s, onwards.
@jarednovel
@jarednovel 2 года назад
@@karentorkar8256 A lot of lies were told about Indigenous people of colour. For instance, they were branded as savages and cannibals in some instances when that is not even true. It is a known behaviour of humans that whenever they want to destroy their perceived opponents or even subjugate others, they would first of all demean them, defame them, drag their reputation in the mud. You need to realize that the missionaries and explorers were also used in Africa as Trojan horses. They served as spies for those that wanted to establish colonies. Nothing that was reported by any missionary anywhere in the world is factual. More often, the missionaries would produce adverse reports to among other things justify funding and also to please their masters in Europe that wanted to establish colonies.
@karentorkar8256
@karentorkar8256 2 года назад
@@jarednovel There's nothing strange about that behaviour, it is common to other cultures. The scale of female Infanticide in both China and India has massively distorted the population gender ratios. Pre-Christian societies made human sacrifices and warred incessantly before they evolved away from Tribalism. We've already seen these patterns. And the demographics describe the patterns of evolution. We are also seeing the warlike tendencies expressed among the Gangs around the country, these days. So it's no use denying it.
@jarednovel
@jarednovel 2 года назад
@@karentorkar8256 There is a book that came out around 2015 that stated how members of the royal family practised cannibalism. They ate human flesh in the UK while accusing native tribes in other parts of the world of cannibalism. You want a link .....That is Narcissistic projection. About human sacrifices, they were offered even by the Anglo Saxons. Even the Arabs, Ancient Egyptians and many other races participated in human sacrifices. The practise was common because many ancient people worshipped the female goddess that was called Hathor, Isis and Astarte etc ...and the sun god. In times of crisis these deities could only be appeased if offered human blood. That was the belief.. Europe has also fought tribal wars in the past.. Yet Europeans have always pretended that they are more civilized and have Higher moral authority. Civilized people do not engage in illegal foreign wars that Kill and maim even children. Civilised people do not sell other humans like property. Civilized people do not dehumanise others..Civilised people do not commit acts of genocide against others they want to rob of their land and birthrights

Ummm Pā. Utu. These words are highly significant for what happened when a small number of europeans first settled in New Zealand . When māori were first exposed to western civilization they discovered muskets worked a treat when it come to their preoccupation with war fare . About 25 % of the population was slaughtered by the orgy of violence that predated the 1840 Treaty with their colonizers. A state of perpetual warfare was the norm before europeans settled NZ and introduced the concept of Law .

Yeah I use to think that New Zealand lived up to its 'clean & green' image too, unfortunately having grown up here now I can tell you it's false, more a marketing slogan than anything else. I suggest you do more statistical research 'TRACKS'. Outside of our large hydro-power production, our grid is very dirty and per-capita emissions are huge. We have the worst recycling stats in the OECD, and the highest car-dependence (& resulting housing unaffordability) in the world. And even a supposed 'left-of-center' govt. has done little to nothing to change any of these conditions. We have a lot of work to do to ever earn the 'clean & green' that we never were (post-colonisation).

Unfortunately rubbish, waste, plastics all came following colonisation, and has increased in volume with every passing year, and true to their nature the colonisers have done nothing to maintain, decrease, or even eliminate the waste that has slowly but surely polluted our rivers, beaches, lands, and foods. Though New Zealand is advertised as clean and green, reality is we’re probably one of the least polluted countries, but polluted none the less… Though I’m thankful for New Zealand as my home, Born and raised…more needs to be done to keep the environment clean, and make New Zealand actually’Clean and Green’..
