I have lived half my life in Canada and half my life in Australia. I recently spent 2 weeks on holidays in the South Island of NZ and absolutely loved it! It's like Canada smooshed into a smaller place. The only downside I found was the cost of living is higher there. Petrol is about a dollar more in NZ than in Australia, so if you are touring by car, that's a lot of money. I would love to live in NZ though. Very beautiful and laid back.

It's definitely a wonderful place to live and if we didn't have so many family/friend ties in Canada, we might be trying to emigrate here permanently! NZ is not without its challenges though but neither is Canada! I miss a proper winter though haha!

Thank you for your very incisive and pointed comparitive analysis. I particularly loved that you were able to pick on the very subtle nuances that define the "true quality of life" in the ethnography of a culture. The colder and more extreme weather in Canada I guess, makes the culture more materially focused, while NZ's milder moderate weather seeds a more rounded balance amonst inhabitants and more nature oriented. Very valuable content, I subscribed and hope to watch more of your articulate videos. You are clearly born with a penchant for vlogging. Much Love and Light Angel, Godspeed.

29 years in Canada. 1 in New Zealand. Canadas Superior. Both great countries with neither being a bad choice but thinking with my head made me realize moving back to Canada was the right choice. For now at least. If you were someone who was rich and money wasnt an issue I'd actually push you towards NZ but for an average person earning 35-100k Canada is the far better option. Its already hard enough to pay your bills and put a little away these days the extra stress of earning way less just isn't worth it. I like how you mention living/working in New Zealand is severely different than traveling. This couldn't be more true. I traveled around for 3 months and it was the most amazing experience in the world that I'll never forget. I also worked 9 months full time at the same profession I have in Canada and I have to admit it was kind of depressing. I was taking home 50-55% of what I was used to.

@@brittanymorgan09 Since its such a sought after destination I think it's important especially to any Canadians reading to realize whats in front of you. For someone who's 18-25 and maybe a student or fresh out of school with an entry level job and not much experience the transition probably wont be that bad. But if you have any level of experience and are 25+ you're gonna feel the blow big time. If you get the opportunity to do a WHV and you're still of age by all means go for it you'll have a blast but I'm speaking for the people contemplating a more permanent move. My best explanation would be to take what you have cut it in half and think about if you could survive. In my nine months of working I don't think I went to a sit down restaurant ONE time because of the prices. Something I missed was $2 coffees in Canada before work because in NZ they were smaller and $6 and I wasn't willing to pay that.

New Zealand is a beautiful country, but inflation is destroying our economy you should probably be aware of that there's a lack of work unless you get into the medical field, or you could become a cop but trust me it's not as great as it was 10 years ago and it's only becoming worse because our government is basically selling the whole country.

if you move here for a job, you will love the time off that you build up quickly. You are expected to take it all each year, so that your holiday 'bank' of time off owed, is reset to zero each year. SO after a year you will be owed at least a month off. You just talk to your immediate supervisor and mention that you want 2 wks there, a wk here and another week there.... in most cases it is sorted straight away. Unless there is a time when everyone wants time off at the same time. In that instance, every company has a different way if resolving that, from seniority preference, to a 'draw' from a hat.... that sort of thing. There is also a generous sick leave system too.

In NZ you can pick and choose the temperature by adjusting the exposure you have to the sun and wind. The wind is freezing in the summer but the sun is scorching. After dark im allways cold in NZ in the summer cos used to the sun in the day keeping me warm. I also found this in Australia as well where you get both the hot air and the strong sun but you still notice the sun go down like in NZ. Your right about the healthcare, its a lot more private in NZ than what ppl think. Its a hybrid system and it still costs you to do to doctors etc. There is still the safety net for hospital worthy dramas unlike the US but you will pay for doctors visits and especially dental care. Im sure Canada is better for dental care especially for toothache as you guys have much better access to natural pain relief than in NZ. And for that reason i totally agree with you regarding the attitude in NZ regarding mental health etc etc... i dont have many friends here and ive lived in NZ most of my life. I have tourettes syndrome and that puts even more of a wedge between me and other ppl not just socially but employment wise too. I mostly work by myself and for myself due to maltreatment at my previous job. When you work for yourself you can take as much time off as you like! You het paid better than slaving for a boss alongside other boozing cretins and virtue signallers who show their true colors once the cameras are off them and their not on instagram haha. I like your comparison. There are certainly pros to living in NZ. The isolation comes in handy if anything crazy happens in the Northern hemispheare especially with WW3 but only if NZ keeps out of the melee.

We love this vlog, Brittany! Great points.👍 I'd swap the lifestyle and climate in Canada for NZ in a blink of my eye.❤ Ottawa gets incredibly humid and hot in the summer, and the winter, with the wind chill factor, can be bitterly cold, making it tough to go out🥶. The positioning of Ottawa in the Valley contributes to these extremes. Climate, prices, and the cost of living are shifting globally, making life challenging everywhere these days. Tx again for a great vlog. Lots of love 💖💖💖

Unless you have Auckland in mind for a particular job, or really love sprawling busy suburbia, I would recommend traveling around NZ for a few weeks before settling. You may find another spot that is far more economical and more enjoyable. Mostly, people live in Auckland because that is where their job is, or they just love a big busy city, or were born there and never think of moving.

It's not often New Zealand gets commended on its weather 😆 I like your frankness Brittany. I think they're two very desirable places to live but its obvious that Canada has a lot of advantages being in the Northern hemisphere and with more opportunities for individuals seeking generally higher incomes. I've always thought it takes a little bit of eccentricity to emigrate to New Zealand - on paper there are other places that make more sense. However, I think some people just enjoy the (fanciful) idea that NZ is peaceful and far away from all the world's problems.

As a Kiwi, the answer is "yes", clothes protect too. I hate wearing sunscreens too, and I just wear lightweight shirts with long sleeves and a hat with a wide brim. But any skin in the sun will burn. You will still find some kiwis who still scoff at the danger of the sun - but I am in my sixties and have been having extensive skin cancer treatment, a result of a lifetime of NZ UV from the sun. Just be aware that if the sun is out, especially the hours where it is high in the sky, so the light passes through not much protective atmosphere, it will burn quickly. Careful the wind isn't blowing the brim back on your hat, I have been unknowingly burnt many times that way.

As a born Kiwi, I can confirm a few things about NZ: although it didn't used to be, today cost of living is very high (groceries, electricity, rent, buying a house, petrol), although real estate cost lowers a lot the farther you are from main cities. Public hospitals are excellent for life-threatening emergency care, such as heart attack etc, but if your condition means you aren't going to die today, you could wait months, even years for treatment publicly. Yes the sun is fierce, you burn easily so cover up or become a pink lobster, and skin cancer is a big thing here, I can confirm this personally - wear a hat! I have never thought much of employers here in NZ, but hearing that in Canada you only get two weeks holiday and might get sacked for going on holiday, that is truly shocking! I still want to visit Canada one day, but as a tourist :-)

I live in Quebec, near Montreal. We do have a 2 speed health care now. Nowadays, it's very hard to find a doctor for something that is not urgent unless you're ready to pay. Heck, you might have to pay just to get the appointment! And the waiting time is awful! So I believe NZ is better in that regard. Also, 2 weeks vacation is the minimum that the law prescribes, but many companies offer more. Personnally, in the company I work, I started with 3 weeks, got a fourth one after 1 year and a fith one after 5 years. Many big companies offer similar conditions. And for being fired for taking you vacation, unless you go AWOL, that won't happen. And if it does happen, it's illegal. So on this point, I give the edge to Canada.
@brittanymorgan09
@brittanymorgan09 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment! Quebec is so starkly different from the rest of Canada, it feels like going to another country sometimes lol! The healthcare in Canada isn't great either but it's much much easier to see a doctor for non-emergency reasons back in Calgary than New Zealand. Here, you need to be signed up with a GP in your region and the wait time can be weeks. But of a nightmare for expats in the beginning. The 4 week minimum holiday here is a massive bonus, but you do get paid less overall for the same work than in Canada so there's a trade off. I really miss Canada and look forward to returning despite its flaws.

That's a great video! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I think you went a bit too hard on Canada in certain aspects. 2 weeks of vacation is indeed the minimum mandatory allowance but most people get at least 3-4 weeks. I've never had a job where 3 weeks was the minimum given! @@cadifan I spoke with a GP office the day I needed to see a doc and they said it's a 4+ week wait and that the only way I could see a doctor the same day was to go to emergency. There seems to be a big gap in NZ healthcare because I can walk into a walk-in clinic in Canada and be seen almost immediately. Not the case here. I was really lucky to find a remote practise that did a consultation over the phone. This is the reality of moving to NZ. this was helpful as someone from Okotoks Alberta who is thinking of moving to New Zealand. When going to new Zealand for the first time, do you recommend someone travel/explore or start right away with a holiday work visa? also so far we have had a pretty chill winter no snow in Okotoks/Calgary yet!

Welcome fellow Albertan! I'm glad you enjoyed this video 😄 I think visiting NZ is a lot different than living so if you can do a working holiday or work visa first to try it out, that would be your best bet. If not, maybe a long trip like 3-6 months would give someone a better idea of life here. I'm shocked there's no snow yet, that's awesome!

You need to be more specific my friend. Do you mean move to New Zealand permanently or WHV and you are of age ? How much money you have in the bank account available to spend will dictate if you travel or not first.. If you're doing a WHV with good money in the bank I'd honestly just say wing it lol. A few months travel a few months work or vice versa. If you plan on leaving full time just really do your research. Youre most likely better off in Canada its just new Zealand will have better weather but it will be harder to pay your bills and save.

Yes! Government, city and certain private industries (like oil&gas) all have much more vacation time and usually pensions. Legal minimum is only 2 weeks where it's 4 weeks in NZ so that's a huge bonus if you don't want to work a government type job.

Are houses in new Zealand also cold proof like Canadian houses which have pre installed heaters?
@brittanymorgan09
@brittanymorgan09 8 месяцев назад
A lot of them are not. They have much lower insulation standards than Canada so can be cold and damp. Even where we live now which is a newer "luxury" building still gets moisture all over the inside of the windows in cooler months. Some have heat pumps which only really heat the room they are in. Some very luxury homes might have central heating but it's definitely still a struggle here to get a warm and dry home.
@yootoobnz8109
@yootoobnz8109 3 месяца назад
As a Kiwi, I can say generally only the newer houses are built with any real insulation or double glazing, the older houses have little to no insulation, unless they have been renovated well. Rental houses have new standards they legally have to meet, so may be slightly better, among the old houses. As an elderly man, is something I am still puzzled as to why older houses had no insulation, all I can think of is that in the old days, firewood was very cheap and plentiful, and electricity used to be very cheap too. But the country was built on sheep, so why some of that wool wasn't put in our walls, I have no idea.

6 months of winter, you wish ... snow starts in September and ends in April (maybe). I always joke most of Canada has 9 months of winter followed by 3 months of mosquito season lol. Also Auckland is more comparable to Vancouver or greater Victoria area in terms of quality of living and weather than Calgary (which is a dry empty prairie at an elevation of 1000m above sea level)
@brittanymorgan09
@brittanymorgan09 9 месяцев назад
Lol where in Canada do you live where it's winter for 9 months 😂😂 I grew up in Ottawa and we always had a full fall season and sometimes no snow until January. Calgary was a shock but they are just getting snow now this year and when it snows in September it melts the next day. Same with April, it'll snow but melt the next few days. I've seen it snow in July though!! The chinooks are a blessing too. It's really not that bad **some years. I didn't compare Auckland & Calgary for lifestyle/weather, just compared it for cost of living since it's similar in population. Thanks for the comment!

Just one main comment in defense of civilized New Zealanders. The crate day thing is recent invention, instigated I believe by a radio station shock jock and as an avid conservationist and wildlife advocate, I, and many others consider it an abomination in every way, shape and form. Drunken hoons killing unhatched or barely hatched chick's in their nests as they career around riverbeds or beaches on motorbikes is not a generally favoured pastime by most, but people, and birds end up paying for the carnage! Otherwise don't know much about Canada except that Dad's sister emigrated there and he came here, so have quite a few rellies most of whom I have never met, so serendipitous where you end up eh!

I'm not sure what gave you the impression that I think that but I don't. There's tons of sober people in NZ. The problem is the drinking culture.
