Tour and short guide of the Newark Air Museum by Sqn Ldr Ted Coningsby.
Located on a part of former World War Two airfield of RAF Winthorpe, is the Newark Air Museum. They have over 75 aircraft including both helicopters and aeroplanes with a mixed range of diverse and significant aircraft. They also home noteworthy aircraft that are registered in the national aviation heritage register.
The Wessex helicopter seen in the opening scene, first entered RAF service in January 1964 with No.18 Squadron of RAF Odiham in Hampshire. It was the first RAF helicopter capable of night operations.
They even have the iconic Avro Vulcan, and you can get right underneath it. The Vulcan carried the United Kingdom’s first ever nuclear weapon, which was called Blue Danube. The Vulcan was used in combat as a long range bomber in the Falklands War in 1982.
WH904 was built as a B.2 by Shorts at Sydenham in 1953. In 1954 it joined 207 Sqn at RAF Marham. During 1955 it was converted to T.11 standard by Boulton-Paul when the extended nose was fitted to accommodate the Javelin. In 1963 it joined 85 Sqn, it was modified to a T.19 and spent time at Binbrook before returning to West Raynham and then on to join 7 Sqn at St. Mawgan in Cornwall. In 1979 the aircraft went into store at RAF St. Athan, finally moving to Marshalls of Cambridge from where it was moved to the Newark Air Museum.
WR977 was built in 1957 at Woodford and joined 220 Squadron (which was re-numbered 201) and coded ‘L’. In 1959 it was transferred to 206 Sqn and coded ‘B’ where it remained until 1963 when once again it flew with 201 Son coded ‘D’. After a few more years of changing squadrons and modifications, in 1970, WR977 finally came to be with 203 Sqn and moved to Luqa, Malta. It was retired to Thorney Island before joining a small museum at RAF Finningley as an instructional airframe. It was dismantled by the museum members and moved to Newark Air Museum in 1977.
This F100D Super Sabre has very early Lakenheath tail markings, LT. Today the base uses LN on their aircraft.
Blackburn Buccaneer was specially designed for the Royal Navy., which is why some have manually folded wings. The Buccaneer was a British low-level supersonic strike aircraft with nuclear weapon delivery capability. The RAF also used the Buccaneer, in 1969 and had been used in combat in the first Gulf War of 1991.
Ted gets a little bit excited when he sees the English Electric Lightning, as the aircraft was famous for its vertical climbing takeoffs. It was also unique for its vertically staggered twin engine configuration. It was a MACH 2 aircraft, meaning it could go twice the speed of sound.
This is a beautiful museum for anyone, from aviation enthusiasts or not. It could not be run or maintained without the wonderful staff/volunteers who make the place special personally.
