As a native Texas I didn't expect to lose power for seven days in the snow of Feb of 2021. I had plenty of pantry food (& water), but no way to cook it. We ate gas station food for a couple of days, no big deal, but could have been worse. Emergency cooking is something I take much more seriously now.

I absolutely LOVE my Coleman oven. They sell for under $40 and I have made bread, muffins, cookies, etc. Everything turns out perfect once you realize the interior is hotter than the what it reads on the outside door. Putting a baking tile or brick on the bottom is what helps give the oven even heating. Just set it on one burner of a propane camping stove. Worth walking outside to get those delicious baked goods during a power outage!

Thank you for showing the many options of off-grid cooking. For fuel for the butane stove. Check out Asian market stores. They have cases of these guys in packs of 4 or five for $5/pk. Also to maximize natural fuel, any leftover burning wood we boil water and store it in a large 2L Air Pot thermos for hot drinks later.

I love the safe heat. Easy storage too. I took scrap wood (4) 2x4s, 2 ft long each. Screwed 2 of them together on top of each other. Then screwed the 2 on top of each other. Place them about 3 ft apart on top of a counter. I took my oven rack out and placed it on the top of the 2x4s. Placed safe heat underneath the rack (I did it on my glass top stove). Big enough space for 2 safe heat to cook in both a pot and a pan.

Good timing! At 5pm Pacific Time today they announced rolling power blackout alert for tomorrow in Western States from California to New Mexico. Tomorrow is also peak temperature day in the current heat wave, plus a Spare the Air day. Harvested my first snap peas yesterday from my plot in community garden, despite attack of the birds the first week of planting. The idea of garden cats won’t work here, unless I declare them “service animal”. More snap peas ripe tomorrow. Having lots of fun.

You know I will. I grew up with A/C, and still don’t have A/C (except in cars) but use all of the passive cooling methods for our home. Plus, a few weeks ago we replaced ALL of our outside windows with super rated double pane ones. The difference is amazing. Thank goodness we live where the cold flows first after 2 or 3 days of hot weather.

A very excellent and informative video. Thank you for this useful information. An experiment that I contemplate but have not performed yet involves outdoor charcoal cooking. I do not have a camp dutch oven but do have two stove top cast iron dutch ovens. One is 4 quart capacity and one is 7 quart capacity. They seem to nest reasonably one within the other. What I plan to do is line the larger pot with aluminum foil, light 8-10 charcoal briquets and distribute them around the bottom and attempt to cook a stew in the smaller pot. It may be necessary to prop the smaller pot on metal chopsticks to increase ventilation a bit. I think this may be a fairly economical way to use charcoal but will find out when the outdoors is a bit cooler than now.

Homemade alcohol stove (made from 2 soda cans, a nail, and rock-wool). Alcohol is easily made (and therefore renewable), clean burning (no Carbon Monoxide). The stove itself can be designed to deliver a constant and safe amount of heat, though I would advise using a floor tile to protect kitchen worktops 😁😁😁. Like using a Thermos flask as well. Have used it myself to cook pasta and rice, and would think it would be perfect to cook freeze-dried food for a hot meal. Loving the channel, even more. Peace and Blessings to all

The camp chef oven is the exact same height as a regular stove top when it's in the back of a grand caravan. I use the blowtorch tanks they're the slightly smaller by volume shorter runtime, but i find them easier to find and they are usually cheaper by volume. They're also thinner than the regular green bottles so fit behind the oven nicer too.

For everyday uses in the summer we have a natural gas full size stove with oven changed over to propane.We also just got a char griller acorn that is an excellent cooking option. It's the best grill we have ever owned. And for winter a traditional wood cook stove. We have 17 acres so we have an endless supply of wood and can also make charcoal

Boy, I thought that I had carbon monoxide in the house one day when I woke up with a headache that you wouldn't even believe. It had been there since the day before. So I immediately left the house and went to Lowe's and bought two carbon monoxide detectors. They didn't have any with a readout, yet they still cost a small fortune. I'm sure I could have gotten a better deal on Amazon, but I had to take what I could get. I agree that the digital readout is much nicer. But, I've got what I've got now. I was lucky that I did not have an issue with carbon monoxide that day, but it just reminded me of how important the detectors are.

Can anyone tell me if this paint would be safe to have around food? I originally was going to use my small chest freezer as an oven but we have tunneling squirrels who have eaten my huge garden so now the freezer is a giant garden pot! Finally something the squirrels cant get to and eat all my veggies.

@@TheProvidentPrepper Wow, thank you, I didn't even know about BBQ paint! {my BBQ & smoker could use it too lol} I will be sure to send pix after my project is done. Being old and disabled it takes me a little longer to do things as hubs had a stroke and is unable to help me. I already disassembled the stand that was attached but don't have a clear idea what I'm going to replace it with, something easily adjustable is the plan. I live in the Cali desert and it's still in the 80's & 90's but I still need to be able to track the sun. I just found the paint on Amazon, figuring 2 cans should work. Also seeing the silver BBQ paint so I might just get some for whatever I am going to cover it all with unless I just use the silver car sun shade like you showed on one of the vids. Thank you for helping me!

@@TheProvidentPrepper No problem, glad to share. Since the cable companies won't take the dishes back & so many just leave them on the roof it seems a good way to upcycle these things with a very good supply available. Hubs and I talked today about a stand & came up with: using fence posts and a piece of chain link fencing and just setting the dish in it's own little hammock to make it very easy to change directions and follow the sun.
@JonathanBJones
@JonathanBJones 2 года назад
Hi Virginia...sorry I am late to this discussion. If I understand right, you are going to use the tv dish (painted with a chrome paint) to reflect energy into a cooking box? If so, that seems like an interesting and reasonable approach. I would be interested to see pictures or a sketch of how this would work. I am always excited to see people being creative to get the job done. You may also want to look at other designs online...there are some really creative ideas. Keep me posted. Thanks for being part of the solution!

@@JonathanBJones Sorry I am so late to get back, I'm a caregiver to my DH who is disabled due to stroke & several other medical probs so my time is divided into bite sized pieces lol. I already painted the dish and a friend built a platform for it. I just need to do the surround and cook something on it! I was trying to figure out how to possibly cut a shower door to build a cover but I think that is off the table {glass cutter told me it's almost impossible to cut that shatter proof glass} so now I am trying to figure out how to use my silver windshield cover around the edges {frame wise to hold it}; I have a lot of tulle {netting like in bridal veils, I buy bolts of it to use on veggie plants against the bugs} so I figured I can use it above the food against bugs & dirt. Obviously I'm still experimenting but feel this project is has a good chance of succeeding, unlike my fight with the burrowing squirrels! Hints welcome!

Just random thoughts while thinking about emergency power. Generatters about solar generator etc. How would the freeze dyer work with these alternate energy sources. I know you break down energy usage as do some other you tubers. I am Very bad at kw hours Watts yada yada. Would the freezer dryer remain a viable long term piece of equipment? Iknow along with my Cosori dehydrator. and solar drying in Florida I would be one of the ways to preserving foods in my freezer along with my propane burner and canning jars. Once those are handled I would not use electric freezer for storage again till gris is up and stable. But I thought once the immediate food is handled that going forward if the freezer dryer Could be run that would be more ideal than canning or in addition to canning as propane may not be easy to obtain. A large dollar array with storage batteries May be reasonable. Using my propane for cooking a nd some canning. Any thoughts? Kris in Orlando
@JonathanBJones
@JonathanBJones 2 года назад
Hey Kristie...great questions! You can definitely design and build a solar power system that would run the freeze-dryer, but it would need to be fairly large, and much bigger than most (or perhaps all) of the portable power stations on the market. On average, our freeze-dryer batches run for about a day and consume about 15,000 watt-hours. Most of the power stations store about 2000 watt-hours or less and could not charge enough with solar to come close to keeping up. Freeze-dryers are a great tool for preparing now, but probably not very usable in a grid-down crisis when available energy will be needed for more pressing needs. Thanks for being part of the solution!!
