Well, I never thought I'd say this but I did lactate testing! Who am I? A pro runner? A great experience and gave me a lot of insights into my fitness and where I am in my running journey so far. Phily happened to have her testing two days later and that really shows why she's a pro! Watch out for her video coming soon to her channel!

You’re not slow, Philly is fast. There’s a difference haha

This is so cool, what an opportunity for a non pro! Guess that roomie of yours does come in handy sometimes. Still waiting to see Phily filming on the bike, but this is a start. 😀Appreciate you sharing your journey with us.

Awesome video Daniel! When I had a lactate test done, it turned out that I was running way too slow! 😂 On threshold workouts I was 20-30sec/ km slower than my ACTUAL LT2. It kind of blew my mind how actually hard of an effort your threshold pace is
@agenthoini
@agenthoini 9 месяцев назад
This is the exact reason i wonder once in a while if itd be worth doing a test. Cuz who knows, maybe im a lot faster than i think i am, i just dont know whats actually possible :D
@agenthoini
@agenthoini 7 месяцев назад
Well now ive given in and did a test as well and turns out my feeling for where LT2 is was pretty much spot on, however i now get to do my easy runs a fair bit faster which is a win :D

Great video - you looked in a better state at the end than I was expecting! It'll also be really interesting if you're able re-do in 6 months to see the changes. Sometimes that gradual improvement over time can be a bit disheartening without a PB or data to show the improvement. I discussed doing one of these tests with coach a little while back - I'm fairly confident that the paces she sets for the sessions is on the money so it's not critically important but I'm a data-junkie. I think it's time to get it done once I'm back up to full fitness.

The blend of HR and perceived effort on easy runs is really interesting. Especially as I’m about to start a base-building phase after an injury and I was looking at doing several weeks of running in HR zone 2 exclusively. Perhaps not now 🤔
@DanielMoves
@DanielMoves 9 месяцев назад
From what I can tell HR is a great indicator and helps inform what pace you run at that day but if you solely train on HR I could stop you progression. This is what I’ve taken anyway 😂 and I’m by no means an expert

It’s probably a good idea to use HR when returning from injury! Especially just to be on the safe side :)

Great to get an insight on how the professional marathon runners are doing it! So nice to follow along on your day there. Keep up the good work 🤜🤛

Interesting watching this, I'm booked in for my first VO2 max and lactate test at Bath University on Monday. I ran most of my last marathon training to heart rate, but think I'd like more of an insight to lactate pacing

@DanielMoves done my lactate test at Bath uni. Previously I was using the MAF method and calculated my zone 2 to be 139, the lactate threshold test said it is 151. Quite the difference, think science beats the random calculation

Interesting about the HR trending up. If I hit 155+ early in a run I can feel like death... but if it creeps up after 10-20mins of

This is exactly how I feel!! And Fletch said exactly the same thing us HR to start your run and inform your perceived effort and then forget about it

Well done Daniel - you did a pretty good job explaining what the lactate threshold is! You're lucky they didn't have you do a VO2max test, that's the one that really hurts
@DanielMoves

Yes I’m very lucky, Phily had to do it in her testing it looks awful!

If you are nerdy enough to want to know why this is a good idea there's an excellent YT video that covers this called *"The Physiology Of Endurance"* (two parts) on the Evokeendurance channel. I'm now FINALLY starting to understand the science behind zone training.

Can you tell me more about the whole process of testing. Did you have to go fasted for that test? How was the warm up for that?? The test it self was 4min blocks with 30s rest in between and taking the pace up every block by 0,5km/h??

This is really interesting and kudos to you for a great presentation of the subject!! With so much contradictory info out there on how to determine where your zone 2 HR actually is, I think I’ll take advantage of a lactate threshold test at a local university that offers it. Thanks for sharing 😅

Your easy zone being anything under 165 is a pretty good LT. Mine is closer to 150 but it was 144 so it's moving in the right direction. But I'm 69 years old. I want to get this tested as soon as I find a place near me that can do it. I'm not a pro (obviously) but I have been training hard for 5 years and my Polar HR test said I as "elite" LOL

Do you think that rogue data point might have done you a disservice? It's just because it says your predicted 5k is 24:51 under the graph, but you smashed out that 23:14 parkrun not so long back 💪🏻
@DanielMoves
@DanielMoves 9 месяцев назад
I don’t think so, Fletch mentioned you have to take the race prediction with a pinch of salt. But saying that it is pretty bang on I think, a combination of being ill, reducing intensity at altitude and running slower in my easy runs has caused me to loose a little bit of fitness I think 😊
@ebrunner1315
@ebrunner1315 9 месяцев назад
Interesting! Just wondering why the test was taken from behind your ear as oppose to finger prick test (which is what I've normally seen). Also, good points on the heart rate and long runs - completely agree with that and have always wondered if the approach was correct when your HR is very unlikely to drop unless you start walking.

Good info. Yeah HR training is hard especially when it is affected by external factors, like heat and humidity. By the way, have you ever done Garmin's guided lactate test? How does it compare to the lab?

If the heartrate goes up during a long run when the speed is constant, wont the lactate do the same?

Only if you drift over your threshold it could caused issues. Lactate is allways there, it's fuell for your body.

As a man who’s clearly grey in his 40s, I wonder…. Are you also going grey!? It seems so in several shots. Also, is this Phily’s fault? In my car I blame work, a newborn, and the genes my dad passed on after he was totally white by 45
@DanielMoves
@DanielMoves 9 месяцев назад
😂😂 I am! And for me it’s definitely genetics my dad was full grey is his early 30’s but I’m sure I can blame a few greys on Phily 😉
