Nice to see the newborn baby chimpanzee getting a good feed from mother Alice.
Chester Zoo's new baby chimpanzee was born on 29th December 2023 to mother Alice.
This is wonderful for the zoo as the female chimps at Chester make amazing mothers.
Chester Zoo is part of the European and international Chimpanzee Breeding Program and is dedicated to ensuring the survival of these magnificent animals. Chimpanzees are great apes and are human's closest relative, sharing nearly 99% of our DNA
The new baby is adorable Alice is an experienced mother and keeps baby close to her tummy holding it with her hand supporting it with baby clinging on to her when she moves and walks
The rest of the troop were calm and settled around baby on this visit and many of the chimps including the younger ones took an interest in the baby
ZOO BABY BOOM!
The zoo has an incredible record for animal baby births over its long history and the chimpanzee group their are having a baby boom at the moment! this incredible baby birth comes shortly after baby Jeff's first birthday!
The Chester Zoo Baby Birth makes the troop population at 21 the baby's gender is currently unknowns as chimpanzee mother Alice keeps the baby close to her body at all times! just as she did with her daughter Annie

Alice is an experienced mum and has a 4 year old daughter Annie.
The Chester Zoo troop which now totals 21 members comprising of 7 Males and 13 Females and baby (sex to be determined)

Why are the prolapse's not surgically repaired ?? It must be so uncomfortable for her , I must say I find the lack of concern disturbing ....... Zoe , Canada

No, Alice has that quirk. Just look up "chimpanzee swelling", in her case it is more exaggerated than normal, but when her hormones go down it is greatly reduced. They do not operate on her because it does not harm her and the operation could be complicated and meaningless, when it does not cause any health problems.

Alice does always get a very large hormonal swelling, she has had many babies and this always occurs. to surgically remove her genitalia would be extremely bad and cruel.

It is an oestrus swelling that female chimps get when in season and pregnant. Alice always gets a very extreme swelling but it is perfectly normal for her. It has now reduced significantly due to her feeding the baby. Hope this explains. 🥰

Baby is adorable! Question: Do chimpanzee fathers have anything to do with their babies? I realize they don't help raise the baby, but do they hang around mom & baby at all or groom them?

They do play with the babies, but don't really do any serious helping out. We have a video coming up of Carlos grooming Alice since she has had the baby. 🥰

It's called a "hormonal swelling." Meaning it swells up to know the males she's ready to breed. And that's the reason why she has a newborn baby.

@@Winter_Sniper_818 thank you. I've just gotten interested in the orangutans, chimps, gorillas so all of this is new to me. I can't stop watching these videos. They are so beautiful and smart. It just looked like it was painful but I'm starting to learn a lot about them now.

It also must be very heavy and pulling on Alice and they have stated she has only had it like this with the baby I disagree she is always like this maybe a little less but it looks like she has twenty pounds juggling between her legs and this has to hurt her as you would imagine. I am unsure of some of the explanations given by this youtuber.

I wonder if there’s ever a problem with a baby animal being able to latch properly after birth to nurse. I personally haven’t ever seen it happen but that certainly doesn’t mean much either. Often times when a woman has a baby it can be more of a challenge for the baby to nurse and there’s more than one reason why that is. If it rarely happens with animals, I can’t help but wonder why.
