I cut 10 1/2 inch squares in coordinating colors or theme and sew 3 across by 4 down. Applique on some squares. Back with just flannel using same method, stitch in ditch to hold layers together, add a blanket stitch around and use that to crochet border in a soft yarn. I add a label with babies birth date, name, weight to the back. Mom’s just love them.

Love this idea for baby blankets. Not sure your regular size blanket is quite big enough for swaddling, but very easy to increase the size. The tip about not needing so much quilting was excellent. I was thinking there should have been more quilting until you reminded me that the quilting was for the batting. Thanks for this. It is a really informative tutorial.

This is an excellent idea. I like putting flannel on the back of baby & toddler quilts do that it's extra snugly soft :-) Thank you for sharing.

I've made quite a few swaddling blankets with a cute flannel front and back but never pieced any, this is a great idea I'm going to have to try.

I thought probably the lack of batting was due to baby being born in a warm summer. Most babies have problems dissipating heat and generate a lot of their own heat. But I would add batting for life up here north. I also prefer the pretty baby flannels from Joann's. Baby quits are easier and I've done quite a few, but I am a novice to quilting. Great ideas on baby quilts tho.

This is pretty easy and cute. I think it also would be cute with some hand or machine embroidery on one side, on a solid fabric.

Another quick question Diane - can I use baby fleece fabric instead of flannel? Please help. Thanks heaps.

To achieve 8" Pin wheels, what size should the squares be? Please please help me. I have already made one; but would like to do the 2nd one on the video (pin wheels) - kindly let me know how big the squares should be for the final block to be 8". Thanks so much and God Bless.

Hi Diane, thanks for this easy and beautiful baby quilt for a new born. But can you please tell me if its ok to stitch the quilt first and wash it afterwards, instead of pre washing? Please reply. Thanks and God Bless.

If you're using flannel, wash the heck out of it BEfore sewing it. Flannel is notorious for shrinking. And if you're using red cotton, definitely wash it first. Quality fabric is much more color-fast that it used to be, but if you''re slumming with Wally fabric, don't take a chance.

Darn it- I bought thin batting and a backing fabric :/ Guess I'll need to make an extra quilt...

Like these a lot. But I thought that a quilt had to have three layers. I am new to this.
@petmomful2260

A regular quilt has batting inside, but she skipped it to make it lightweight for a newborn. I have also seen where some people use a layer of flannel inside instead of batting, so the quilt is light but warm. That flannel really shrinks, tho, so you gotta prewash and dry. I am sort of new, also. Thank goodness for RU-vid videos!! Good luck!

Why do you keep insisting that these little blankets have no heirloom value? A baby's first blanket, particularly anything handmade, should be made to be treasured. My god-daughter still has the appliqued quilt I made for her when she was two. She is 45 now. It was heavily played with (tug of war with her dog) and washed often, but she kept it and treasures it because it was sewn just for her.

I started to write the same thing. It is a receiving blanket. Lovely, sweet but not really a quilt.
@Marla.22

It IS a Quilt. Some quilts do not need batting, especially summer quilts. This is simple and easy and when its finished, a little weight is on it making it a quilt. Blankets are diff. Flannel can used in adult quilts too instead of batting
@thebeatonpath
@thebeatonpath 5 лет назад
@@Marla.22 this is a receiving blanket, not a quilt. I might call it a quilt if the top was pieced. I've made dozens of these and dozens of quilts.

This isn't a quilt. It's just like a receiving blanket. A quilt has batting and quilting to hold the layers together. And, as someone else said, a baby's first blanket, especially a handmade one made just for the baby, is most definitely an heirloom item. I don't understand why you keep saying it isn't. The striped one you showed is not something for a baby. That would hurt the baby's eyes to no end. This video is wrong, just... wrong.

Newborn? You mean the definition of newborn according to majority of pediatrics (0-1 month)? Colors...OMG...That's too busy for newborn whose eyes not that well developed. I would recommend pastel or monotone colors with contrasting ( not too small) simple pictures, like white +black, pastel beige +white, etc. If the lady was talking about her own grandbaby, why would you create such a stress for his eyes? I mean just admit she did that blanket for herself ( to enjoy the colors of that mess) rather than for her newborn grandkid, I can not touch the fabric softness, but as for colors I am not sure that baby would feel comfortable in it
