I like it when mothers teach babies how to sign language too before they’re able to talk, it actually helps them to learn how to communicate earlier in their lives. Sign language could also help babies to understand how to go potty in a can.
Yeah! I love hearing this. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do this, and we ended up not doing it and using verbal cues instead or pointing or tapping the potty. I cover this in later updates. Our baby seemed to be quick to communicate verbally and therefore we didn't regret not using baby sign language (she started saying "psss" or "pou", but if things were different maybe we would have regretted not doing it. I'd love to hear more parents' views and experiences with this.
I’ve always thought that ppl generally don’t use the word or even think of the word ‘respect ’ in relation to children & babies; so it was very refreshing to *hear you mention that a few times.
I started at 2 months old and just within 3 or 4 days she is pooping 90% in the potty. Pee is more difficult since she does it so often hahaha but at least the poops are going in the potty which is amazing. She also has started to wait after waking up until I put her on the potty 😳 at least it seems to me so, because she used to wake up and poop in the diaper before I could pick her up. But now she wakes up and I take her and put on the potty and she immediately poops.
I am pregnant and would like to try this with our son once he's born. I am just wondering if you could comment about clean up? I was thinking of getting a hose to attach to the bath tub faucet and wash it off over the toilet. I'm worried it would be unhygienic to clean it in the sink? If you bring the potty with you when you are outside how do you clean it after? Also besides the towel do you also use disposable wipes to clean her up after?
Exciting and congratulations! Breastfed poop is very easy to clean. We have a bidet, but I didn't use it to clean the newborn potty. The newborn potty I would just run water from our basin faucet and pour the contents into the toilet. Every couple of days or when I thought necessary I would wash the whole potty with some all purpose cleaner and a cloth. I don't find it unhygienic to use the sink, but I do pour the content into the toilet and not into the sink. I recommend pouring the contents out very soon afterwards before it has a chance to dry, because if it is dry it might be slightly less easy to get the potty clean with just faucet water and pouring it out. When out - We do the same as above if there is a public bathroom. Run water into the newborn potty swirl it around and pour contents into toilet. If there isn't a bathroom around - use a compostable wet wipe (but most times there was a bathroom - I don't remember needing to do this) At home I use cloth wipes to wipe (she didn't like cold wipes and it was important to me that potty time be a nice time). I would prep them and put them in a wipe warmer. Out and about I used compostable wet wipes to wipe Elba clean or cloth wipes with a spray bottle. When she goes in the potty there is very little to wipe clean which makes it quite easy.

@@stfuporfavor9102 we have a 7 week old who wees after every nap and is dry during the night! We do use nappies when we’re out or in the car but we find he’ll often wait till over a potty! Can’t believe how easy it was/is to do
Thanks for these tips! Will add in trying different facing options, we tried from day 3 and were flabbergasted how easy it was to catch something and two weeks in we are still loving it!!

Best video I've found on EC so thankyou! Question, how do you prevent mess (pee/poop) from dripping after you take the baby off the potty? How do you position him to clean him up? Do you just lay him down on his back and wipe like you normally would? For some reason I thought you would have a different way of doing it, an easier way lol.
For newborn I would just lay baby on what I call a "bum towel" (a flat diaper or a cut up towel that I used for removing diaper, wiping after potty and putting diaper back on). As she got older, I could ask her to stand over the potty holding my shoulders and wipe while she stands. But often it is still easier to lie her down on a bum towel of sorts. With going in the potty there is thankfully very little wiping that needs to be done, so it's quick and not very messy.
Wonderful video!!! I have a lot of confidence that my husband and i can do this! I am 5 months pregnant and I’ve always wanted to go diaper free. I am just wondering if you have any advice on going out in public and the baby staying with relatives - i am more comfortable right now with using disposable diapers because of convenience and comfort level of others (relatives). However, I don’t want to confuse the baby, so I’m wondering if you or the book you referenced has any info on this
How exciting! Out in public - I might make a separate video on. I speak about it a bit in my other videos. I have a spare potty I keep in the car and I do offer potty in the car and when we are out and about. If the weather is nice - I'll just offer outside on a nice grass area. If it's cold - I find somewhere warm inside that isn't too busy. I have only offered potty in public bathrooms a hand full of times. I stopped because the dryer noises scared Elba. I can't share much on personal experience with baby staying with relatives because I've not been away from Elba. But when my mom visits us and is with Elba she offers potty like we do (we didn't ask her to. She just did it because that's what we do & she saw how and when we do it). In the book she does covers this topic. You can choose to part time EC or make requests of the people caring for your baby to offer potty and explain to them how to do it. Random thing on the cloth diaper front - Having done cloth for over a year now the only "inconvenience" really is washing them. And if your baby is staying with relatives, they can just put the diapers in a container for you to wash and in that way it isn't an inconvenience for them. I think baby becoming confused/receiving mixed messages might depend on baby and/or their age. For example, maybe your baby comes to know that at home you potty but when at another house you don't. An experience I can share - when Elba was about 10 months old I was ready to move to diaper free during the day at home and was about to order tiny undies/ trainers. We got a cold snap and our furnace had issues for 2-3 days. In that time I didn't offer as much because it was cold. Those few days did result in Elba not waiting for potty and it took a while before I felt we were ready again for no diapers at home. I have found that when she was older (not newborn) it became more important to be consistent, because any time we weren't our mixed messages did seem to confuse her (but this could be baby and/or age specific). That all being said. Even if I could only part time EC, I would still do it. Hope this information is helpful. Exciting times ahead for you!

Exciting that you are due soon! I don't have personal experience with EC with a boy or with circumcision. I would assume touching the area as little as possible until it is fully healed and that it might be best to hold him in the shower or bath so that the wee can spray without messing and then you don't need to push on the area that is healing. Or just hold off on potting until it is fully healed.

Hi there. My first 40 days video (cave time) has been uploaded :) When Elba was 6 months she would wee many times in a day. At least once after each feed. Poop change - As a newborn it was like 7 times a day, but around 6 months it was most often once a day.
I wish I had known this with my first child. I’m in my first trimester now and I love this idea. It seems like such a great way to teach the little one to express themselves and their needs.

I'd recommend staying consistent with offering potty at times they may typically go. Make a sound that prompts them (they will likely learn to make that sound back to you) and just keep observing your baby to see how they communicate with you. :) And also no stress if your baby has communication that isn't very obvious.
Maybe one day if I have a son, I will make one :) But from my reading it is very similar expect you position p down with your finger so as to not have urine spill from the potty.
We are doing EC since day 3. It works well, but now she starts to ask to put her on the potty at nighttime. She feels good- eating half awake and in about 40-60min. "wiggling" for potty. For me it means 2x to wake up, and for potty for real 😅 How did you manage it with time? She is now 7 weeks
I did wake up and offer potty at night during the newborn phase and then after about 3 months our baby no longer woke to go potty (and she's 16 months now and still doesn't wake anymore in the night for potty). She will wake up early morning for poop and wake me to offer potty, but not during the night. I am curious if the experience is similar for you and if your baby also stops doing it after a few weeks.
So good to be aware of this! Thanks for your comment. In our experience - she was always well supported and not really sitting and we never put her spine into an unnatural position (as in maintained the curve). *during the newborn phase. As her body became stronger we supported less and less.

My understanding is different countries have different definitions of what the "newborn" time is. But I appreciate knowing that it is 30 days from your perspective.
