Recently visited Newcastle, and was quite impressed! Some great architecture, now put to different uses, and easy to get around(unless you don't like hills/steps!) and the river side is great(even spotting a seal) Will definitely be returning!
Hi Eddy, another great video. Regarding the stone monument: In 1770, John Barras opened his brewery on the banks of the Tyne in Gateshead. In 1847, Barras brought his nephew, Col. Charles John Reed, into the business, and when John died in 1861, Charles took over the running of the brewery. In 1884, Col. Reed, realizing that the Gateshead brewery was almost at capacity, bought the defunct Tyne Brewery in Newcastle, and moved the John Barras & Co. Brewery, in its entirety, across the river. This brewery eventually merged with others to form Newcastle Breweries Ltd.
Love your channel Eddie! Love the mix of Newcastle history as well as NUFC info. Hope to visit one day from the States and would love to arrange a tour with you and the dogs :) Cheers keep up the great content!
The reason it is marked established 1770 is because of one of my ancestors on my maternal side. John Barras, he established a brewery in 1770 in Gateshead. John Barras Junior took over Tyne Brewery and then subsequently Newcastle Breweries was formed. This is why a lot of S&N pubs had Barras branding.
I've been to Newcastle breweries many times before it was flattened. I used to work for Rentokil doing high pressure water jetting and Newcastle breweries used to get us in to blast out the pipes that used to take the booze from different places and the smell was lovely, if you've ever walked into someone's bedroom in the morning after they've been out the night before it was just like that lol. I also went to the closing down tour at Newcastle breweries which was a very sad day but also very enjoyable at the same time and we had a few beers in the bar but they were also selling memorabilia from the breweries but didn't have the money at the time but they were selling a massive plastic brown ale bottle which I wanted because it is my favourite drink! Being from Newcastle it's always sad when something historical like Newcastle breweries closes down. 😢
Fantastic video Eddie! I have been lucky enough to work on the Helix development (and still working on it) as im one of the landscape architects that have designed on the site. It is going to be a fantastic area of regeneration for Newcastle when complete!
Great video as always. My mum had an office on the top floor of the breweries block opposite St James Park for 20 plus years, was one of the last to leave when it closed for good, I also had a job in the bottling plant as a teenager during summer holidays, great times. Every time I go back to Newcastle I get a massive pang of nostalgia mixed with some sadness passing the old office block but it's good that it lives on as a viable business.
Absolutely brill yet again Eddie , love your genuine love ,passion and insight into everything you do. I can’t wait to come home in August after 3 years in Singapore, your blogs whet the appetite for everything that’s happening to the city and our great football club. Thanks Eddie .😺
The Newcastle arm of the company dates back to the foundation of the John Barras brewery in 1770. Barras bought the Tyne Brewery in 1884, launching Newastle Breweries in 1890.
Great vid. I spend much of my time on the Helix site as maintain many of the buildings... must admit its a fantastic place to work and spend my time. Glad you enjoyed it and showcased it to a wider audience 👍
Another fantastic video. The original blue star from the Scottish and newcastle brewery is the large one on the dance floor wall in shark club. The one on the side of the building now is a new replica put up in 2011.
I rember as a child standing in the Gallowgate with the smell of hops in the air. Can still smell it now 40 odd years later. Used to get pints of black and tan with export in it in the Haymarket pub.
Hi Eddie great to meet you in person in Newcastle yesterday with your two dogs. Great channel for interesting content. Keep up the good work All the Best Tim ( originally Longbenton) and Juliet from Crawley
Yeah it’s still fairly new and still under construction in parts. It’ll have more eating and drinking outlets soon snd it’ll pick up. Thanks for the message Sharon 😊
Another brilliant video Eddy. Very excited about coming home this summer and joining your walk to see all the new developments since I was last back (December 2019). The architecture is great. But the buzz word DATA makes my skin crawl.
Excellent video Eddy as you'll probably know by now I'm a massive fan of your content that you produce. Can't think of a video that I've never learnt something new. Keep it up mate 👍⚫&⚪
Newcastle broon has been my tipple for years Eddy unfortunately it's not the same now as it was when Newcastle breweries done it another great upload mate so look forward to them Eddy
There are a few backward-looking anti-science comments in the comments here which I find very concerning. Newcastle has been a worldwide centre for science and engineering since the industrial revolution, and a new science campus is absolutely fantastic news to bring talent and investment into the city. Thanks so much for the videos - I'm a geordie in exile and have enjoyed keeping up with the toon from afar. I'd love to hear a history of the music halls and theatres around Newcastle - I know a lot of the songs from Geordie Ridley and the like but not much about how people used to see them performed!
Mcewans scotch ,me favourite drink when I was a teenager.Another fascinating vid Eddy .BBC North or Sky your next job?Why not, your that good in front of the camera. So relaxed.Keep it going mate .
Lived on westgate road for about a year, walked through this place pretty much everyday to get to tesco or puregym by eldon gardens, much nicer walk than going down westgate anyway. And fucken hell that construction sound is iconic, same one ive been hearing for that year right out my window
Excellent video Eddy, I know Beamish Museum have some of the old Newcastle Brewery Delivery vans and carts in there museum that will probably bring loads of memories back just like the smell lol
A bit older than you!!…..started drinking Newcastle Exhibition draught😂and remember a trip around the old brewery seeing all the Brown Ales bottles coming down the line!
Hi Eddie love the show. Ive got a couple of ideas for future shows. Maybe something about the Academy and what DA will be aiming for. Maybe a bit of detail about what other big world clubs do like La Masia in barcelona. We should really be making these comparisons considering our new owners. I think people might also be interested in seeing the regeneration of New East Manchester and how the football investment has helped transform the place and any other similar schemes in the world. Generally interested in how elite clubs do things so potentially many different topics. Soz for the brain dump ramble hope it sparks off ideas. Tyler
Hi mate, some great food for thought there. Have you seen my two videos on DA and what he will do for the club? These sorts of things you mention are something I think about a lot and I did a video a few weeks ago about what the club want in relation to a new training complex. Of course it’s a bit trickier with our club as there is a huge hurdle on ‘where’ they can develop in terms of the training and academy. In the video I made comparisons with Man City and Leicester. Feel free to email me as I’d like to hear other views and ideas for future videos in these areas 👍🏻
Need to sort out the sound quality Eddie lad, that wind noise could be reduced dramatically, otherwise enjoyed the video but best scotch? Exhibition was the one man Eddie fella.
@@TynesideLife yeh that was the greyhound back In the day. This one was a new bar after brewery was pulled down. Don't think it's there anymore. Can't think of it's name and can't find it on Google. I will ask about it. I was un a few times.
I used to buy 24 bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale back In the day...It got me a wife the Everton USA Chairwoman 2009...She has Buggered off to Sunderland or Durham and I am furious...Howay the Toon Army...
There’s all sorts of diverse developments going on in newcastle. Check out my videos to see other projects going on. It’s an exciting time for the Toon 🤜🏻
Please help me to solve an argument between my brother and myself going forward as a child I believe I visited a building that housed the brewery horses in the Haymarket we used to sneaking and give them cubes of sugar we pinched from the cafe opposite my mother worked in thanks Eddie
When I'm out during the day I'll always be sitting there with a nice cold bottle of broon in me schooner until I end up in matthattans or toon then its shorts al neet🤣
McEwans had some of the best beer adverts on the Telly… all the “ones you’ve got to come back for” ads…. ‘Geordie calling Houston” “Goodbye Vladivostok” “Tokyo” “talking heads”, “Escher/alive and kicking” They did Guinness quality beer ads before Guinness! Florida’s horrider than Whitley bay..no McEwans Best Scotch in the USA…Beam me up Scotty, have us out of here, The States? Nice place, shame about the beer!
I used to love myself a few pints of mcEwans best scotch. Ask for a pint of scotch down south and they’ll think your mad. Then serve you a pint of whisky 😂
@@TynesideLife they tried to say at our club that they were struggling to get it. I just think it's because they weren't making enough money from it as it was only 2.10 a pint. First time drinking on low fell this Saturday so see if I can get a pint up there. I'm only 31 but I enjoy the old fashion ales 🍺
@@TynesideLife nice pint once went on a tour of the fed brewery when I was in the RN and the ship was in refit at Wallsend, very enjoyable and messy,, rig run 79..
@@TynesideLife the brewery had an amazing warm smell . This is an underused site . Shame you couldn’t tell us who the other investors were . Brown envelopes..
@@void1718 each to their own. The site is state of the art environmentally friendly eco buildings using renewable energy from a central building. The science community are developing cutting edge technologies to save lives, prolong healthy lives and educate the best minds our region has to offer. I do videos about our history and culture and even do guided walks, so I’m sensitive to anything that deteriorates our heritage. Just my opinion, but I love the place and think it’s great for the city.
shameful history of newcastle brown Eddie. just being honest. Heineken made history with brown but like you only drank it occasionally but heritage was destroyed.
Just a thought Eddie but have you thought about splitting your channel into one for your football content and one for your lifestyle vlogs? Just i get the feeling as your channel grows it would help split up the content for those who might not be interested in either the football or lifestyle. Just thought its easier to do that earlier than later down the line. Am sure you have thought about that though. Anyway keep up the great work bud
Hi Martin, it’s something I gave a great deal if consideration to this, for the very reasons you mention. All things considered, I went with the one channel as I’m deliberately creating content that ordinary football fans and folk will like. I’ve created ‘Playlists’ so that those who gave preferences can easily navigate the videos. I also have to consider my ‘Brand’ which is anything about Tyneside and splitting the channel up will (I believe) be a detriment to the channels. In addition, I’m not a Newcastle United daily news channel like the others and it’s not something that I want to do. If I split the channel, I wouldn’t have enough content. Currently my channel is unique and separates me from the others and I’m sure as I progresses, my content will evolve. Great suggestion and I appreciate it Martin 👍🏻
Hi Eddy🙋♂️ cracking video again. A scientific tour de force developing on the site. Part of the future that's for certain. Job creation and prosperity in the coming decades 👍I clearly remember drinking mcewans best scotch in Dunston at the Dun Cow for the princely sum of 70 odd pence a pint! In the 60s my dad had a job fitting carpets in the S&N offices. He was given, straight from the production line, 4 bottles of Broon! Hot almost to the touch! The chap said to try a bottle of Broon when it was warm! Dad said it was one of the best pints he'd ever tasted! 🍻 How much kudos if PIF next year had a blue star on the next home strip? BTW, your white & black bull vlog, I replied regarding Helen notable athletic achievement at an Elswick Harriers race in the 90s 👌
More great memories Graham, you e certainly got some stories. Yeah, I seen the message thank you. I just removed it as it’s on more of a personal and private level 👍🏻
@@TynesideLife completely understand on the removal. I hope it was a fond trip down memory lane. Yes there is a back catalogue of times gone by.....its all your fault Eddy ( in a very excellent and positive way!). Great stuff. Have a very canny weekend, Cheers Eddy, with a bottle of dog ! 🍻
@@TynesideLife aye but I missed out on a season ticket on Tuesday morning unfortunately. Would hate to see NUFC relocate but we could easily fill SJP with season ticket holders!
