It was around 40 years ago, and we were University students (many lived in Heaton even then) sharing 35 Cheltenham Terrace. I recall the cold despite feeding the gas meter regularly; Our back wall fell in under the weight of the snow that winter - so either 1977 or 1978; and surprised to find my elder sister's ex-husband David Pinder living next door at 37, renting a room from a friend. One housemate Ian Thompson was doing the landscape design course at the University, and we spent a fair amount of time in Heaton Park walking in and from the Union, helping him with his tree identification. Good memories of the people and the area, catching the bus in, and even the train from time to time.

I lived in Heaton from 1953 till 1974 when I got married. Lived on Heaton Rd, Coquet Ter. and Simonside Ter. Got married at St Gabriel's. My husband says you can take the lass out of Heaton but not Heaton out of the lass. Loved every minute there. I was Watson then and went to Ravenswood and North Heaton Secondary School for Girls.

I really enjoyed seeing this. My Nanna and Granda lived on Addycombe and my parents started an auto electric business on Rothbury Tc. I even bought my first house in Heaton (Warton Tc) I remember going to the sweet shop as a kid and seeing the old pics really took me back, thank you xx

I live in Katsuura, Japan and originally ,many many years ago lived in Rochester Dwellings, Walker. I was born in 1935 and have outlived all my siblings and most of my cousins. Still very active and, teaching in Japan. I often wonder if any of my contemporaries are still around. Our family moved very much upmarket to High Heaton in the 1950s to an excellent council house - in Langton Terrace. Those were the days of 11plus exams and possible upward mobility to grammar schools. Also 2 years National Service . R.A.F . and Germany in my case. Those were the days. Whyaye man. Would love comments. Jack.

I was born in Cardigan Terrace went to Chilly Road and Manor Park school and lived all my life in and around Heaton but sadly Chilly Road is nothing like it was back in 60s and 70s it was a thriving shopping place with a huge variety of shops now it's just fast food and charity shops.

Paul Addison. I went to Manor Park in september 1965. Unfortunately due to family circumstances I had to leave in 1968 when we moved down south. I was in forms 1w, 2w, and 3w. I can still name all of my classmates alphabetically. Happy days in a great school. Keith Black.

The only thing I remember about 1970s/80s Heaton was The Legendary Yorkshire Heroes off licence, where they sold vodka on draught. You could take in a pop bottle and get it filled with spirits for half the price of a 'proper' bottle. It was also the only place in Newcastle that sold Belgian beer. Maybe that's why I don't remember much about the place ...

Very well edited together, particularly the sounded effects. I lived there for a year, lots of students but never any bother. Sadly the Spar turned into a halal butchers which didn't impress me.

Used to visit friends living in this area, Heaton Road and Rothbury Terrace etc. during my living with my wife in the University residence near University library during 1981-83. I was studying postgraduation in Naval Architecture in the University under some great teachers. Used to come most often to Heaton from my place by bus, was it bus no. 38? Sometimes my friends used to pick me up. Great memories Sir, of my late twenties. Thanks for upload.

Well-presented 'now and then' photos. Actually reassuring - many street scenes have not changed much. The streets and houses look cleaner and tree-planting has greened the environment. Using black-and-white for photos in the 1960s and 70s and good colour for 2010-12has the effect of somewhat exaggerating the change. Colour photos from (now) 50 years ago would show that not much had changed. The cars have of course, and there are many more of them showing that most households have cars now. Newcastle and Tyneside have such well-built houses and such a strong urban fabric that they retain their street scenes and character better than most parts of the country.
