A very lively video of an old fashioned Newfoundland kitchen party featuring Fogo Islands most well known accordion players, Harry Eveleigh, Pat Freake, Harvey Budgell. Which took place somewhere within the early 90's on Fogo Island, Newfoundland.
Some of the tunes played (not in order)
- Off She Goes
- Cock Of The North
- Mussels In The Corner
- Boys Of The Bunkhouse
- I'se Da Bye
This clip was taken from "Fogo Island, my Island home" movie published and produced by Gerald Freake.

Oh my goodness, my father's people are traced back to Fogo as the place they settled in from Europe. My brother went to visit the cemetery there. Dad was VERY proud to be from The Rockl.

I've met many Irish people that have said Newfoundlanders seem to be more Irish than they are haha! Thanks for watching.

Its too bad but my generation may be the last to perform and enjoy these get togethers. The younger crew just doesn't seem interested in this kind of socializing and entertainment. God Bless Fogo Island for bringing us joy.

Im probably one of the only ones in the new generation that still enjoys the newfoundland tradition and i try to play myself. It is definitely a dying tradition and it doesnt get more sad than that.

Fogo Island and the North Shore as well as on the Avalon Peninsula's South shore has kept their strong Irish roots (including the accent to some extent.) The west coast kept their French Roots, and everywhere else is a mix of everything.

To my understanding the video was shot at the Budgell's house in Seldom. Harvey Budgell is the one playing the accordion on the left when the video starts. I did a little family tree lookup for you and his father was Samuel Budgell. I'm not sure if that name rings a bell for you or not. Hope this helps!

The rhythm of these "turbo-charged jigs" reveals their origins: this type of dance tune is a "Kerry Slide", and it doesn't take a genius to divine where that originates...

@welsharpe @welsharpe I don't personally distribute them, no. However you can contact the following email: gerald_freake@yahoo.ca (He is the publisher and producer of the video) and as for the cost I believe it is between $ 20.00 and 30.00 CAD ... however I am not certain of that so please ask him when or if you email him. @TheBowarm The first tune is known as "Off she goes" It's played in a another square dancing video I've uploaded, though not to be confused with the Irish tune "off she goes", same name however both are very different tunes.

Any idea which one is Harvey Budgell? My great grandfather, George Budgell, was born, and lived for some time, on Fogo before moving to Labrador. Wondering if this is a long lost relative of mine? I'm in Saint John, NB now.

So close to Cajun music, is it the Irish, Scottish, Brittany bent?.....keltic maybe.
@nitropost
@nitropost 9 лет назад
+Jeremy Hill Nice Jeremy, you just responded like I wanted, BTW did ask the question....you gave a good answer thats what I was aiming for, I am not confused but ignorant of NFLD music basics,still,by your defination there seems to be an influence from old Irish stock,could there also be Scottish influence, as for the french Cajuns (and also the celt descendants in Brittany) when you listen to a kitchen party they have the same attitude and most often the same instruments. Wont argue about the K or the C, in Nova Scotia they seem to use both Anyway thanks, I have learned a thing or two!
@stayalivesweetheart
@stayalivesweetheart 8 лет назад
Jeremy, respectfully, +nitropost is close...so much of the Newfie sound comes out of the blend of Acadian (later Cajun Cousins)and Irish cultures.All melded to Newfie :D Cajuns still have similar parties!
@stayalivesweetheart
@stayalivesweetheart 8 лет назад
Nitro, you were on point...it's a meld of ALL those influences. Acadia, Scotland, Ireland, etc.
@nitropost

stayalivesweetheart Yeah well , listen to Appalachian folk music ....you see the influence.. the celtic roots are all over the place.
