My husband and have been married for 21 years. I love him more now than ever! Last year I became critically ill and I was in a coma, on a ventilator, and multi organ failure. I was dying. My husband went against my family and did everything possible to save me and I survived. I ended up on dialysis for a year and ultimately heart surgery. My husband took care of me through multiple hospital stays, rehab stays, surgery, and trips to the dialysis center. I recovered enough to get off dialysis but I still may need a kidney transplant. For much of my ordeal, we were separated due to COVID restrictions. My husband did everything possible to keep me motivated to get back home to him! That is what love looks like! I am so blessed to have married such a wonderful person!

So glad you had someone fighting for you. My wife had to do almost everything for me when I broke my back in two places 22 yrs ago. It took 5 surgeries including having an electronic spinal cord bypass implanted, and years of physical therapy, but I learned to walk again and she never complained to me once about all she had to do during those times. The love of a spouse is an amazing thing... I hope you eventually get the transplant you need 😇

My parents were married 35 years before they died. Their marriage absolutely ruined me for dating. They had discussions, rarely argued other than bicker pokes, never said unkind words to each other, listened and changed to make each other comfortable, never made a threat or raised a hand. They were a loving team until they died. Its an example and upbringing I wish more people were blessed with. Sometimes we are the cruelest to those we are the closest to because we feel like they will still love us at our worst.

Robotic Kim & Penn are hilarious, can you imagine talking like that all the time? lol My hubby & I have been together 26yrs, married 20 and it has only gotten better. We laugh a lot, spend time together but not afraid to tell each other stuff that is bothering us, or at least I am not lol He is so easy going, nothing bothers him EVER or if it does he won't say (which I think is more accurate lol). It sometimes annoys me how he can let things go and not stress over it but I am thankful for it because I've gotten better about that too thanks to him.

The farting thing is so true. When you're dating or newlyweds, you hold it in till it hurts. Now we just fart and giggle about it. Being married to someone you love is amazing. Our first year stunk. You have to figure out everything from money to toilet paper brand. Our first year was a constant learning experience. Now marriage is easy. We are still learning about each other, but we know how to both get what we want without hurting each other. Also, you learn how to make your wife happy, and you do things just to make her smile, which makes life awesome.

I still don't get short marriages. Most of the failed marriages I know about are because "someone changed." Nope, you didn't talk before you got married. Or the "we had a bad fight" excuse. Cool off and resolve the issues that are causing the fight. Couples fight. It's life. However. You're a team. My dad told me once, "What's more important, your car and the dent or your wife?" I said,"My wife." He the told me to get my a$# in front of my wife and apologize. I did, and it got a lot better. My dad's words made me realize that no matter what happened, my wife was what I truly cared about. We are doing great now that I have realigned my priorities.

Marriage is awesome and beautiful and God ordained marriage really is a thing to be celebrated and going into marriage, it really is important that you go in with the intention of staying with that person for the rest of your entire life. Just like life isn't perfect, marriage isn't perfect, but the perfection of marriage, is that man and wife gets through the imperfections *together* and work on it and _through_ it together. I can say that after having kids and having several relationships, and then being married once and being divorced.

Well, after 45 years together, I have to admit we've learned to ask for what we want, learn disappointment at not getting it and just getting what we want for ourselves if we want it that badly. It's just a serious of compromises. We probably disagree a whole lot more than we did when we were first together. We have grown in different directions. We don't even sleep in the same bed (he snores LOUDLY and fidgets). We are old people in our 70's now and facing the prospects of leaving this earth without ever doing everything we dreamed of doing one day. That being said, we say I love you every day, can't imagine life without each other, best friends that always have each other's back and still hold hands and cuddle when watching tv together. Yep....relationships aren't easy, but nothing in life is. You have to really work at being successful at anything, but it's so worth it. Love you two. I hope I live another 30 years to see you guys get old together!
@bellem.8329

Same. 40 years in January. Got married 3 months after we met. Had a baby 11 months later. We also sleep in separate rooms because he snores and has restless leg syndrome. But we love each other, farts and all and will be together forever. Zero doubts. It’s a fun ride. And now we are growing old together and dealing with whatever life throws our way. Because it’s better together. We’ve got each other’s backs, thru thick or thin. We made a promise 40 years ago and it still matters. I wish everyone could experience a long term marriage because it’s so special and comforting and it gives you a promise of a future at every age and every stage.

No matter if you’re gay or straight, this rings true on every level! This month we will be married 14 years, and in December celebrate 16 years together. I am my Wife’s 3 wife, and She says (about me) “3rd times the charm!” We are different in so many ways, but I agree with Kim; I absolutely love us now, from back in 2005. I am much more comfortable with myself, and especially helpful was finally getting the proper diagnoses of CAPD, ADHD, and autism, from a lifetime of being told I was bipolar. Not only do we now know more and more how to help me communicate and share life, but my confidence is through the roof. My Wife, (who is 11 years older than me) is still my Bestie, my partner in crime, and still my favorite person to be a goofy kid with. Life is beautiful. Even the dark moments. Staying grateful, it makes getting to a lovely spot so worth the hard work, sweat and tears! We love you guys. Thanks for being so real, and it makes us feel happy to know other couples are just as silly and enjoy life! (Penn, you are a little over a year older than me, but man, if I ever thought I had a missing older brother, Dude, you’d be it! You both are sooper dooper! Namaste

Life really got rolling a lot quicker than we expected but we wouldn't change it. However, I have recently been really missing the care-free newlywed days when all we wanted was to be together and make each other happy. Being married has shown me how selfish and immature I can be and the work you have to do on yourself as a person (with God's help) is no joke. I really want to work on seeing the positives in our relationship again instead of dwelling on the negatives. Thank you for this. It was so incredibly encouraging to read through comment after comment of other people sharing how much better their marriages have become after years of hard work!

Also, thanks to years of being together and being each other's best friend we are comfortable enough to do all the things that others find discussing but still love each other and we are able to be honest and yes ask for what we want and know that our partner knows that it's what we really mean instead of assuming that the other can read our minds. It's so much better when you grow together and understand one another. I highly recommend that.

Engaged at 19 (and no I wasn't pregnant lol) 30 years together and 25 years married. I honestly can say that I wouldn't change a thing. There is no one I would go through life with other than my hubby. It's a shame that the younger generations have no interest in marriage because if you find that right someone, there really is no greater gift. Going through life's ups and downs knowing that person is on your side no matter what.

My husband and I have been married for over 35 years, and we were just discussing this the other day! I loved him when I married him, but I had no idea how deep love could be. What we have now is soo different than that first married love but so much more. And I think better.

This made me laugh so much! I love the bed scene! In my house, I’m like, “Don’t touch me while I’m trying to sleep!” Sometimes my husband will try to gain back that long lost time of snuggling by holding my hand in bed, and I’m like, NOOOOPPPEE!

Almost completed year 7. W007! Haha! IT's gotten better every year. I love him more now, so much more. Communication has gotten a lot better. We're better at conflict resolution. We just...know each other better. And we are doing more to care about each other and do for the other person instead of just thinking about ourselves and being disappointed when we don't get what we want. I guess we are less self-centered now and more "us" centered. Getting better and better!

My husband and I have only been married for a year and a half, so we’re still in the newlywed stage, but we’ve been together for almost 7 years now. I can definitely say we’re closer and love each other even more now than when we were lovesick little puppies first dating. Also, y’all’s book has helped us SO much as we navigate these first couple years of marriage!

8 years in. Totally relate. Our newlywed phase didn’t last too long because we celebrated our 1st anniversary with a 6 week old, though, and I had a tough pregnancy. But I prefer it now. There is a lot of freedom in our marriage to be ourselves and closeness because of that freedom.

Me, newlywed: "Whatever you want, sweetie. We'll do what you want to do." Me now: "I do what I want. This is what I want to do. Lead, support, or get out of the way." Us, newlywed: "Let's cuddle!" Us, now: "I'm so tired, I can't even roll over to kiss you goodnight." So he says, "flop your hand over" and I do and he kisses it. Perfect. My Mum used to say that she and Dad were like a comfortable old pair of slippers together. My husband and I are getting that way too. It's nice. =)

Got married at 20 and have been married 7.5 years. We exited the newlywed stage pretty quick when life threw us a curve ball of a house fire after 5 months of being married. Going through something so major like that caused us to really grow in our relationship and cut straight to the tough stuff.

We’re married almost 25 years/together for 30 and people considered us an old married couple when we were just going together. The only differences ive noticed over the years are the body function noises (burps/farts/noisy nose blows) which i was never privy to during courtship days and we are less possessive of time spent together than before (at least ive gotten used to the workaholic in him and spend my time with my own interests when hes busy).

I don’t have a pillow wall, but we have a sleep number bed and his number is 35 and mine is like 50, so on normal nites, my side of the mattress is almost an inch and a half taller than his side. We may not cuddle all nite, but we are much nicer to each other during the day when no one’s back hurts! 🤍💛

My husband and I have been married for 7 years and we are still learning. We grew up quite differently . And learning to deal with that can be so hard to do. But we just grow as best we can. We are committed to each other and we arent going to give up. I think we have both learned a lot about each other and how to like communicate things even if it makes the other person upset . We sit with those feelings.
