This is the same setup I have on my shoalie but I put the battery into the front hatch that I cut out. I do recommend the extended tiller handle with the "jointed" connection. I can steer from a forward facing position with the tiller handle setting beside me.

@@WadeHarrison i Run the cables through the hull and drilled the center of the access hatch lid for a trolling plug receptacle. I run the tiller handle through a loop on my seat and it sets beside me for easy access. Next summer I may do a PWM and foot steering but I have not decided yet.

Good to read this. I'm thinking about doing the same with my Shoalie. I'd like to run a 55lb thrust and use extension handle with the u - joint. Good idea putting the handle through the area on the seat too. Thanks for the ideas.

I have a Shoalie too and I was thinking about getting this motor. If I do, I think I'll get the handle extension and also get the universal joint for it to make it easier on my back. I paddle most the time, but I also want to run a motor on small lakes to save time.
@WadeHarrison
@WadeHarrison 19 дней назад
Exactly this was a test to see if it was going to work with this setup and totally agree I’m 80% paddling but those times we put in at a boat dock and the spots I want are like 2 miles flat water in head winds other side the lake where the river comes in that why I want a small little motor

everybody keeps saying super simple or very simple. No it is not. Most kayaks don't have that dry storage in the back that I have seen especially all the fishing ones. I have a catch 100 classic I don't have that. So that would mean I have to cut a hole there I don't have the material for that. If I could get that transom, which is already in my cart lol, I would have to figure out a way to cut in it and then screw this in. I hate when people take what they are good at doing and make it sound so simple. You did a fantastic job with this, you could of bought a longer tiller and maybe it might have been a little easier to steer it. Awesome video widh you was near me to help me lol I have a the trolling motor as well. Question, do I need the screws or does it come with the screws?
@WadeHarrison
@WadeHarrison Месяц назад
Yeah the shoalie had a mounting spot for a power pole or motor so I get it that it’s easier. And easy setup is definitely subjective term like Tom Brady will say a 60yard pass is simple 😂 and the handle I got was cheap I want to rig up foot steering at some point so got that to use until I do.

@@WadeHarrison I don't have that back dry box section you have so that would be hard for me to install that transom mount. It sucks because I broke a rod holder from the middle part and now I am frustrated. I have to go buy some cheap ones for both sides and then learn how to take off my screws for the old ones. Pelican use some weird screws for their flush mounts. I tried that sideways thing did not work 😢

I really want one of these, but since Newport says they are designed for lead acid batteries (which I can't lift), I'm sitting on the fence about it. This is from their website "All Newport trolling motors are designed to be used with Lead-Acid style Deep Cycle or Marine batteries (Flooded, SLA, AGM or Gel). The use of Lithium batteries is not recommended and won't be compatible with some of the features offered on our motors. For more information, please read our post Lithium Batteries With Trolling Motors?" I'm pretty sure these days that most people are using lithium batteries though, I'm just worried about voiding a warranty.
@WadeHarrison
@WadeHarrison 6 месяцев назад
At the price these sell for I’m good using whatever on them I don’t understand why they only want lead acid batteries I’m going to be using a lifepo4 and have been useing it and seems to be going just fine
@S.C-m8c
@S.C-m8c 6 месяцев назад
I'm going to get one anyway, the thing is to not run them at full power for long distances, evidently without a battery management system to regulate the voltage, at full power lithium batteries put out more power than lead acid which can cause the motor to overheat which will damage it. The features that aren't compatible that Newport is talking about (when using a lithium battery) is the battery power level metering system because of how the batteries get depleted, I guess lead acid will show a gradual decline and lithium will pretty much show full power until there is none, lol. Anyway, thanks for taking the effort and making the video, I'll probably buy your exact setup. Except I'll be running it on a paddleboard, haha.

@@WadeHarrison I just picked up a 10' angler Kayak at Tractor Supply for $250. My next move is to fabricate something to put a 2hp 4stroke Honda on it. Picked up a bunch 1 1/4" PVC pipe tonight to build some outrigger's on it first. I want to take my 50lb Cattle Dog with me & it's only rated at 275lb capacity. I'm sure I will make it work & for $250 I couldn't pass it up either way. The little 2hp Honda has been sitting around for year with nothing to attach it to. It's on now & then it's FISH ON 🐟 😎👍

the battery indicator is sort of useless with a lithium batt. The bms is always giving all the power it can until it cant and shuts off. and that's how the meter will read. You need a shunt or some lithium batts have a built in Bluetooth shunt... I just stopped worrying about it. 100AH lifepo4 in a kayak will go all day long if you keep your speed down. The battery can usually last way longer than I do.

@@ADKMuskyFoolonFly63 I have 2 CK1 Ventures and decided to go with the Newport Vessels 55 lbs motors for both. I must say, this motor pushes those kayaks along quite well! I put a piece of 1” solid wood on the transom to give the motor mount grips more security. It’s primitive but it works really well. Of course it’s a lot cheaper than installing a motor mount. Also I have the extension handles ‘with the knuckle’ which especially helps with steering. Way better than the straight extension with no knucle! Worth the extra money for sure! Anyway, i hope this is helpful. And I hope you have some great times on the water with your CK1!
