My grandparents lived in Newport and I always loved going there. Yes, it has its faults as do all towns and cities, but overall the positives easily outweigh the negatives. Star of the show has to be the Transporter Bridge but there's also St. Woolos Cathederal, the stunning views from Ridgeway, the canal (disused for boats but still open for lovely walks), the Market, Roman remains at Caerleon (part of the city of Newport) and much Victorian housing, full of character and home to great communities. No family left there now but I still consider it a bit of a second home and occasionally enjoy going back.

I had a girlfriend from Newport; Bettws Estate; and she was the only beautiful thing about the area as I recall. I remember she took me shopping in Cardiff & it was like...... a wet weekend in Romford, but she said lets go to Barry and off we went. It was a beautiful day, the sand was golden & warm. We had a great time, but that was before it became all touristy & spoilt. I understand now she's living in Cardiff with two adult kids now, 40 odd years on. God the '70s were a crazy time.

Good video, makes me a little more optimistic about living here. A couple of inaccuracies in there though. Bristol airport is around 36 miles away and the old footage from 1972 wasn't Newport (the opening scene gives it away with "welcome to Teeside" written on the building). I guess the original uploader of that maybe had the footage confused as Teeside also has a transporter bridge. Your attempt at a Welsh accent cracked me up, sounded more Indian 😄👍

Thanks for your expansive comment Tony. The best content is the comments. Thanks for pointing out the inaccurancies, and yes, my Welsh accent was awful. Take care and keep tuned. Nice if you could sub me if you haven't done so already. There will be future videos about Newport.

I lived in Newport in 2019 as a digital nomad. Why? My bestie lives there. On the upside, train travel around Wales from Newport was quick and inexpensive. It was very inexpensive to purchase groceries/ health and beauty supplies/ get an eye exam/ purchase contact lenses/ have a pub meal in Newport. On the downside, yes... there were many people in the city center asking for money or sleeping rough. Many shops in the city center that have closed, along with closures in Friar's Walk. On the upside again, I didn't run into any American tourists in Newport, nor any other Americans. The shopkeepers/ pub servers/ train employees in Newport were very kind to me, and were always surprised that I chose to live there as a digital nomad. Perhaps because I was one of very few Americans there, my experiences were far more positive.

I’m from Newport and have lived in the US for over 20 years. My Mrs is American and has been going to Newport for over 20 years. She has been treated fantastically by all because she is nice…it doesn’t matter where you are from.

You'll find other RU-vidrs who have actually visited the area being much less complimentary towards the place. It is sad what has happened to the place - it would be nice to see an improvement, but I don't hold out much hope.

I stayed in Cwmcarn close to Newport a few years ago on holiday. I am surprised to hear that Newport is voted to be the 3rd best place to live in UK. That can't be right. Everything is closed in the shopping area including Debenhams. Poverty is obvious and the homeless situation is sad. Problems with drugs and vandalism. I haven't been there in a while, but Newport doesn't have any pluses at the moment. The council don't seem to be investing in the area. I could be wrong.

Hi Sandra, you've obviously been to the "wrong" parts of Newport. Yes, there are many rough parts, as there is in any city, but there's also a lot of good. It isn't nearly as nice as it used to be. but the town centre has recently had many millions spent trying to revamp it to it's former glory. It's a long struggle, but I think they'll get there. The loss of heavy industry in the area has had a signifigant impact on people's finances, but we're battling through, just like the valleys did with mine closures. We have a new university campus, riverside frontage and many new build estates. Combined with the old attractions of Caerleon, Tredegar House, our revamped parks etc. it can only be on the up. There's a new multi million pound scheme to develop 7 new railway stations connecting us to Bristol, Cardiff and the valleys, the aim of which is to quieten the roads and alieviate the traffic in the Brynglas tunnels (something which our council has been trying to do for 20 years), but each time a relief road scheme has been proposed it's been blocked by the Sennedd).

P.S. They also had a proposal to have a barrage like the one in Cardiff which would have transformed the riverfront into a leisure area - that was also blocked 😥

Firstly, Cwmcard on holiday....my god, what possessed you. Secondly i agree, Newport wouldnt be in most English peoples top 200 places to live. You have Gloucester, Cornwall, Dorset, Ashford Kent, most of Surrey, most of Berks, most of Bucks, Stratford Upon Avon, Knowle, Cath St Barnes, S West London, Finchley, Camden, many parts of Suffolk and norfolk, Peak District ....it goes on and on. Christ even Swanseas better.

I came to Newport (from Jordan in the Middle East) in 1988 !!!! It was a BIG culture shock to find this place in the falsely and fakely highly spoken of UK !!!! What a joke most of this country turned out to be , I have moved to London in 1995 and even that is NOT what its cracked up to be !!! This country is owned by the big money people and once they leave you brits will have some serious problems eating each other in the street !!! Oh sorry , you already do that !!!

Immigration for the likes of Rothschild's, Rockefeller's, Ashton's etc is superb for their luxurious lifestyles where they don't have to work, they just live off the unlawful activity of taxation, hence why 'They' create and start wars to drive the native population out so 'They' then can steal the spoils of that land whether it be oil, gas, gold, diamonds, minerals and historical artifacts which some wouldn't believe existed as well as causing civil 'disobedience' because of a clash of ethnic differences of beliefs and lifestyles, of cause they hyped this country up for you to 'move' here so you would be snared in their 'rat race' so they can live in their country houses, penthouses and yatchs, welcome to the UK (corporation) boyo.
