I remember when the war started in Slovenia. I was 12 and the school holidays had just started. I was pissed, thinking: “Why didn’t they pick another time, they’re ruining my summer!” Thankfully in Slovenia the war ended very soon.
At the time my family was in Banja Luka (Banja Luka 200 kilometres from Zagreb - Bosnian and Herzegovina) my parents were buying new furniture, my dad thought was a joke, a few months later war started in Bosnia, a couple of years later we were homeless, seeking asylum in Germany then migrated to Australia. Feel so surreal, almost like a movie
i remember the contrasting emotions of enjoying the Wimbledon (Michael Stich vs Steffan Edberg semi final) and utter terror of a prospect of war in my country....although Bosnia was still not involved....
I felt the same way. I have or never did have any harsh feelings toward any other republic. You may disagree with me but I still feel we are all brothers. God bless and peace out
I was born in Slovenia in 1980. I was 11 years old at that time. Dad sent my brother and me to my grandparents' house in the countryside fearing air raids. I remember spending two days living in the basement of the community farm where my grandparents lived. Grandma made tea and we ate rye bread with lard to keep us fed. My brother Dusan went out with his armed friends to protect the region. In the end, there were no serious battles and we all came out okay in the end. It lasted two weeks. Then war ensued in Croatia and Bosnia. 🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮
Stupid bad war. Good people died for nothing. All brothers killing each other because politics and try to use Religion as an excuse. My father is bosniak from Montenegro and grew up in Bosnia in Sarajevo. He told me many times back then nobody cared, everyone was friendly and loved each other. Nobody looked at each other because of religion. Same language same people
Hello Brother, I was wondering if I had the permission to use this footage in my assignment for school? I am doing a project on the War in Yugoslavia and would like to use some of this footage.
This is very sad. The soul of tens of millions of people was shattered by a group of politicians you can count on your fingers. How can Bavaria, Prussia, Wittenberg etc. be united into one country, but not Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia etc.?
Dang, you should read some history books before asking this silly q. Throughout the history of Kingdom of Yugoslavia and later Socialist Yugoslavia, the nationalism of each ethnic nation teamed with different religion (and there were quite a few of them under one roof) were constantly fighting for supremacy and undermining each other. The Bavaria and Wittenberg is a poor example as it has nothing to do with the situation in both of Yugoslavia.
@@nikolajovicic174 the situation with Prussia and Bavaria is similar. One was catholic and the other one was protestant. They didn't want to unite because of religious reasons, but it still worked out and that's how we've got modern day Germany. Granted, the Bavarian nobility was very angry at the Prussian dominance of Germany, but now the German people are under one flag. Same can't be said for Yugoslavia.
Different languages, religions and cultures. The reason Yugoslavia was unified was to stand strong against any potential external invasions. And when the Cold War ended, the threat of invasions decreased. And of course another reason it broke apart was that the Serbs wanted all the power in the country
Reason is Islam and other religions. You can never have muslims in your country if it´s not Islamic. Just watch what´s happening right now in the Western Europe with Palestinians etc., it´s gonna be bloody in a few years.
@@ЦиганЦигански 1. I lived it in, a lot, I was in the war. Do the math. 2. It was good for Serbia, because Tito uplifted Serbia. 3. The idea of the great Serbia still existed. And after Tito died, the Serbs put it into plan, by blocking any other nationality in the whole exchange of parlament every few years thing. 4. The Serbs gave almost no money to the national Bank, and took a big chunk of it, while the Slovenes and Croats gave a lot, and got dogshit. 5. They refused to build a highway Zagreb-Split, even tho we said we'd pay for it ourselves, instead they took our money, and built a Zagreb-Belgrade highway.
@@ЦиганЦигански 6. They stalled the development of Croatia and Slovenia, and then also, of Vojvodina. 7. The Croatian Spring had to happen, because people in Yugoslavia weren't equal. There were Serbs, and then everyone else. 8. They took down the statues of national heros in Croatia.
@@ЦиганЦигански 9. They oppressed everyone that spoke against Yugoslavia, Tito, and yes, the Serbs. 10. The attorney can't be called in the first 48 hours of arrest, so instead of going to court, "Milicija" just arrested people, beat them up, left them in jail overnight. And tomorrow like nothing happened.
@@ЦиганЦигански I have a feeling that you either didn't live in Yugoslavia at all, or you're a Serb or you're a Jugonostalgičar, and you can't stand that someone would say something against the great old Yugoslavia.
I have a question, when the break up happens, what was the state of your family?. They became part of one of the new nations or have a problem regarding their state?.
@@miko886 And yet you chose to name yourself a commie. I was born in SFRJ and I say it was a shit country. Fucking priviliged commies had it good. The rest worked their asses of, had to pay for cars years in advance and had their savings devalued in the matter of weeks. It was also bankrupt 3 times or so. Shit country.
How is it now in your free Croatia? lol. People fleeing by the boat load, corrupt politicians and a declining standard of living! woot for democracy and freedom. But I guess all that matters is you don't have to live side by side with Serbs, enjoy the imports the EU enforces upon you XD.
@@exoels india is able to it they have 29 or 30 states I don't see Indian state asking to be free I think if Yugoslavia is able to adopt the Indian system they can unite again
@@athishnirup1815 India is the worst example they’ve been losing territory or have disputed claims all over their northern border and massive amounts of ethnic and religious conflict, India is a better example of why multi-ethnic states don’t work than why they do

AAAAAnd there retards come over. Of course it has to be a video about european problem, and some us tards have to come in with "Well you see, here in the states..."
Hearing about all the mass killing that happened during these wars is horrifyingly especially since they happened at the same time as the Rwandan genocide & Burundi civil war/genocide 😭😭😭😭 , the useless UN did nothing to stop mass killing of civilians. Also I can't help but notice the Croatian nationalists & their glorified Facism.
@Frog/Life S Well IDK if they want independence I just don't like it's unmistakable links to fascism & Nazism. As for Slovenia & Croatia being the richer regions of yugoslavia when Serbia has the largest population that's an inexcusable f*ck up on the part of the Serbian & Yugoslavia government as a whole. No excuses there , Should have done more to stimulate the economy in whatever way possible
@@euphoriaggaminghd The Croats nationalist movement at the time was inspired by the close relationship with the nazis during WW2 that's the scary thing about it but yes the chetniks who inspired Serbian facsicm that helped destroy Yugoslavia aren't without blame too. All sides have done evil stuff over the years and play victim when it suits them
Separatist Government of Republic of Slovenia occupied customs and border relay abroad. According the Constitution Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) try to recapture relays but armed Slovenians shot 45 Yugoslav soldiers. JNA reatreat from that Part of Yugoslavia. First war crime committed Slovenians shot the Yugoslav soldiers who want to surrender. Nobody was punished for that.
A lot of people weren’t punished for the Srebrenica genocide and the shooting of civilians in Sarajevo. They tried to recapture the relays, so they attacked the Slovenian soldiers. I don’t see why that wouldn’t be a good reason to shoot them
@@benjaminrajer7810 1) Bosniaks are instant Nation ; 2 ) in Srebrenica was not genocide over Muslims ; 3) Muslims under command of Naser Orić in in Srebrenica and surrounding Serbian villages killed and died 3267 Serbian soldiers and civillians from april 1992. to 1995. ; 4) in July 1995. There are shot "no more of 3714" Muslim POW's.
The war in Yugoslavia could be prevented, but USA, UK ,EU, had their reasons for the war, they wanted to destroy big strong , neutral country and submitt and rule with small "banana" countries. There was fire in the state, but they gave wind in the back for conflict. Result: a lot of death, misery, poverty....
"Strong" country? More like a country propped up with loans and aids from USA, UK, EU and USSR, and forcefully held together by the less developed states (mostly Serbia) who parasitized the more developed states. Without foreign aid it would have fell apart decades earlier.
Milošević was a true communist and yugoslav/serbian patriot that wanted to preserve strong SFRY but was betrayed by slovene and croatian opportunist communists who wanted western style "democractic" elections that brought us fascist HDZ on power
There are so many things wrong with you comment. I think you are just butthurt that nobody wanted greater serbia and that serbia today is poorer than many balkan states.
Milošević was nothing more than a cold-blooded Machiavelli without any principles and only concerned with gaining, keeping and expanding his political power.
Milošević was a psychopath and it sucks to see how Serbs spread bullshit propaganda and managed to convince Westerners that they were the good guys all along. Vukovar, Srebrenica happened. Milošević is a disgusting person. No matter how hard you cope, communism was going to collapse. Fuck you
