@@snehaketkar8571 Veer Savarkar was not even a freedom fighter, especially after he came from jail. His petitions of clemency clearly states that he pled for mercy from British after 6 months of his 50 year term in Andaman. He stated that he has a cult following and procedurally help to propogate the British message. Contrast that with Bhagat Singh who wrote a petition where he vouch that he should be killed on sight which is much more draconian and was only meant for serious offenders during the British rule.

Once our teacher explained in our class the difference between the primary and the secondary considerations. He explained it by using the definition of mammals. He said that mammals, by definition are those who feed from mother's mammary glands. Mammals might have soft paws, soft lips and certain other features as well which are exclusive to mammals but those are collaterals. Those don't define a mammal. The reason I mentioned this here is because people often confuse the primary with the colateral, either mistakenly or intentionally. Netaji named a regiment of INA after Nehru and all such stuff, I guess the pole question is why did netaji leave Congress in the first place? Why did Netaji leave when Nehru was made the Congress head?

Vir Savrkar in Andaman Cellular jail with hard labour , 12 hours a day . Chained to legs . no news papers , ONE letter a year to family and he did not know his own brother was in the same jail !!! One awarded Bharat Ratna to himself ..Other one ignored !!!

@@ToastRusk How comfortably people forget that the very creation of Congress was done post 1857 revolt so that dissident INDns could be "managed" politically and 1857 isn't repeated again. Given the context, it's unsurprising that the Congress was formed by the Brits themselves. However, what you said is true. There's a difference in the crime quotient of begging vis a vis demanding. I guess Netaji too took note of this and deserted Congress. The other interesting thing is that there was so much hollar when a cricket stadium was named after NaMo, but it seems it's perfectly fine if a sitting PM is given Bharat Ratna. Is it too difficult to spot the bias, the hypocrisy? I guess not.

Sampath should write about the Hinduism which destroyed our nation. He asks and debates for upper caste hindus who didn't have any humane feelings. Sampath is a young person he should travel and learn what humanity really is in the modern world. He should understand the people who destroyed temples and people who stopped the untouchables from entering the temples are equally at fault. Has he ever questioned his ancestors for their inhumane practices towards the untouchables? Does he have the courage to come on stage and ask the all the owners of Hinduism to publicly and officially apologise every year for the draconian slavery that Hinduism practiced over the millennia. The topics that Sampath works on are slim pickings in the millennia old history of India.

I agree that Nehru and Savarkar can’t be remembered the same way because Nehru got to rule. Savarkar didn’t. You can’t say with any certainty how we would’ve looked at Savarkar if he or the Hindu Mahasabha got to rule back then. Even today, Nehru is the longest-ruling Prime Minister and, for the longest time, was seen as the benchmark because he presided over a comparatively stable Parliament(people who accuse BJP of exploiting “brute majority” should note that Nehru and Indira Gandhi contributed much because they didn’t have to put up with the same kind of resistance and also had clear majority). But in the brief time he was in the Hindu Mahasabha, Savarkar greatly improved the electoral prospects of the party. When you can remember Bhagat Singh, you should remember Savarkar on the Revolutionary Front. Also, Savarkar did have a post-independence vision of India which is worth revisiting and learning from. Also, the simple fact is, while Congress was in power, they did their best to undermine Savarkar’s history, removing a plaque dedicated to him in Port Blair and sullying his reputation with the same things they keep saying: mercy petitions, and so on. Vikram Sampath mentions this as the starting point of his discovery of Savarkar. Point is, why did the Congress go out of their way to sully non-Congress leaders and keep them out of the history books just because they differed ideologically? Even among Congress leaders, why were others not given as much prominence? There’s no smoke without fire.

@@chandrareddy4392 Try reading my reply carefully first. Did I say any history book(at least textbook) maligned Savarkar? Far from maligning him, they don’t even mention him. That aside, I pointed out a very specific incident where the then UPA government removed a plaque installed in commemoration of Savarkar from Port Blair. Also, Shashi Tharoor and many others have made it a very strong point to malign Savarkar both locally and internationally when they were in power. All this is on record. I did, in fact, learn the names of people like Golwalkar from Shashi Tharoor.

I have been reading about savarkar and golvalkar from my 5th standard. there fore, don't be under the impression that historians did not give enough space to either savarkar or golvalkar. both of these public figures were to be strongly criticised for their views and notions about this country and for the animacity they have shown towards lower classes and the other religions like islam and christianity. to the country, which ecowed the secular values in the constitution from the begining, these people are a threat to the society. neither savarkar nor golvalkar were been physically attacked or assasinated by their rivals as the savarkar's hindu mahasabha assasinated Mohan das karan chand Gandhi.statue removing incident is a political one about which I am not commenting.

All this tells me Nehru was a decent guy. I don't believe there are many people who will deny that. But he was clearly not the best leader we had and he made mistakes. I like Nehru the scholar. I'm not as sure of Nehru the leader. Our problem was that, while I was growing up, Nehru and Gandhi were treated like virtual gods who were above criticism. When you boost two people to such heights and sideline every other leader's contribution, I do have a problem. Besides Savarkar, how many people know of "Deshbandu" Chittaranjan Das and his "Swaraj Party", which included Motilal Nehru? Or even about Rajendra Prasad, Gulzari Lal Nanda, and others like Gokhale, Lala Lajpat Rai, Madan Mohan Malaviya, and so on? Nehru was, in some ways, surrounded by many capable leaders he sidelined in order to rise to prominence. This isn't something we can deny even if we respect him for his role as our first Prime Minister.

@@varunvenkatasubramanian8650 If you want to know the value of Nehru's contribution, ask the question, "Why did the IT industry come to India when all the western world industries were going to china during globalisation. China provided the cheapest labour because of the lack of growth in their country! Despite the availability of the cheapest labour in China, the IT Industry came to India!! Why? this is the million dollar question? It came to India because of three things. 1. Satellite net work which allowed India to become the back office of western world. 2. India was generating young talented and skilled international level programmers, IT designers, managers through IITs and IIMs set up by Nehru. 3. Indian staff was well versed in English because of the 3 language policy which included English. In all these three cases Pandit Nehru has a contribution. It was a visionary leadership! China didn't have skilled IT labour force nor could they speak fluently in English. Other common wealth countries did not have satellite technology even though they could speak English. Western world definitely did have all three but not in abundance and at the rate India could provide! Pandit Nehru definitely allowed India and Indians to LEAD the second industrial revolution. That is why we have the Pichais, Nadellas etc manning the large multi national organisations in the western world. Nehru saw the potential of Young Indians and catered for their needs

@@pgsprakash Read my reply carefully. I don’t deny that Nehru did a few things right. But he also did some amount of wrong. This should be acknowledged and discussed. This is agreed to even by senior Congress leaders who were the first critics of Nehru and laid the foundation for the present discussion. What I find annoying is that other leaders are not given the same kind of importance as Gandhi and Nehru and also that any mistakes of theirs is shouted down and swept under the rug almost instinctively. This is the annoying part: you can’t have an objective evaluation of the man if you insist that he’s nothing less than a God who can do no wrong. By comparison, any discussion on Savarkar and Golwalkar is also one-sided with one party shouting then down and calling them fascists and the other side passionately defending them. The so-called “right wing” is merely doing to Nehru everything the leftists were doing to their own leaders for some time. All of them had their own competing visions but as Indians, we can get enriched by taking lessons from both. In the USA, Washington and Jefferson, Lincoln, Cleveland and Theodore Roosevelt, and others had differing visions for their country and were sometimes at odds with each other. But any impartial historian learns from all the Presidents regardless of what ideology they personally subscribe to. Also, I don’t take much pride in IT despite the fact that it helped some of us get jobs. But we aren’t the ones who create the system that creates these jobs. Despite our administrative independence, we are, even today, too dependent on FDI to power demand for jobs and Reservations dominate the public sector. Nehru is to blame for this because he laid the foundation for the “mixed economy” model that was used or abused by his successors. Also, Nehru failed at training the next generation of leaders and ensuring that his vision is carried forward. I know his type of leader. While he’s in charge, things work. But when he isn’t, his followers run around like headless chickens. As good a leader as he was, I would dislike him for not being an “enabler”. It’s like many of the schoolteachers I’ve come across. They’re extremely dedicated teachers and strict disciplinarians. But nothing works without their presence and input and things unravel in their absence. We don’t need one good leader who, as long as he leads, keeps things in check. We need a system that creates and enables such leaders and one way to do this is to learn from all the leaders that we had. They came from a variety of backgrounds and had different thought processes but many of their ideas are unique and relevant even today.
@pgsprakash

@@varunvenkatasubramanian8650 Don't blame reservation for the failure of India. The amount of money stolen by the upper castes are several times higher than the money ever spend on reservation. Mr Ravi Parthasarathy destroyed ILFS. He took Rs 99000 crores out of ILFS. Mrs Chitra Ramakrishna of NSE and her Himalayan Yogi friend swindled the stock market for a decade. Then there are the Modis, Malliahs, the bank top brasses including those like Chanda Kochar and her husband plus millions of other swindlers! They are all from the upper strata of the hindu caste system. Instead, of blaming the hindu caste system for generating and promoting lesser human beings of poor moral values and integrity, the society of upper castes finds reservation as a scapegoat!! very convenient indeed! Reservation is a pittance paid to the untouchables who created the original wealth of India. For a start, all the temples in India are the blood and sweat of the untouchables. They were the people who did all the manual work in every sector. The upper castes who ruled them didn't do any manual work. In fact, these self styled administrators of Hinduism lived off the fruits of the hard work of the untouchables! As soon as the construction of a temple is over, the Brahmins would come and pour milk over the idols and carry out some rituals. As a result of it, the very people who built the temple and the idols with their blood and sweat are made outcasts. The temple becomes no-entry zone for these people. Mind you, in those days these untouchable were only paid just enough for a hand to mouth existence. What a horrendous injustice? What didn't Golwalker and Savarkar do anything not only to correct this injustice but also to compensate the untouchables? Ideally all the temples and all the related wealth should go to the community whose ancestors built them. We should also get rid of all the sastras, mantras and rituals that failed to protect our land which was rich and prosperous at that time because of the use of untouchables as dirt cheap labour. Those religious practices and the related Gods didn't help us when the invaders came. No point in subscribing to those failed and time dishonoured practices anymore. The legacy that you are talking about is the legacy of a rotten religious system and not that of Nehru. The hindu practices didn't provide education to the masses. Instead it preached and practised a grotesque and barbarian slavery depriving them of any skill development. As a result, even today, there are millions of hindu Indians bereft of common sense and very basic education, etching out a miserable life across the vast swathes of our country. Vikram Sampth and other historians should write history of the Hindu India and not of Savarkars and other hindu religious leaders who practised dehumanising untouchability. They should bring out the gross injustices that were in prevalence because of the hindu religious beliefs.

But the people whose shoulders they stood on are forgotten. This is like celebrating Einstein while forgetting Newton and other scientists who created the academic foundation he built on and changed and not mentioning his contemporaries who took some of Einstein’s theories forward and pioneered Quantum Theory. Good effort to present diverse points of view. I would invite to what Patel writes about Nehru (pages 332 to 334) in Purushottam Aggarwal's "Who is Bharat Mata". He is very positive about Nehru. It is surprising that none of these learned people mention what I consider Nehru's greatest failure "not to make free and compulsory education for children of aged 6-16. @@gargvanit So why blame just Nehru? If you believe in Hinduism, this is the Karma of Hindus! Hinduism and a section of hindus are notorious for the most inhuman and draconian slavery practised on this earth for millenia. The burden of sin accumulated by Hinduism because of this practice is humongous and unpardonable. The barbarian hindu practice of untouchability still continues unabated in millions of villages of India. So the Karma that awaits us as per hindu religion will be horrendous. The best hope for us is to believe at this stage that our Hindu Gods are not real or that they do not have powers to punish so that we all can escape the kind of Karma the dinosaurs faced! By the way, pleasing the Christians was not started by the Brahmin Nehru! It was started by the owners of Hindu religion who allowed the foreigners like the Parsis, Christians and Muslims who came to our country centuries ago to treat fellow low caste-Hindus as untouchables. Says a lot about the poor culture of our religion, its leaders and organisations including Veer Savarkar, RSS and Hindu Mahasabha. All with selfish blinkered caste based views. Never thought of all the Hindus as fellow religious mates. Now these owners of Hinduism just want to punish the people who destroyed the temples and not the people who refused the entry into the temples for the low caste hindus. Why are you not worried about this legacy of our ancestors which not only corrupted and destroyed our noble religion but also surrendered our country to foreigners. When the tire met the road, our Hindu sastras, mantras, rituals and even Gods could not protect our territorial integrity! So what value do these diktats of our religion have if it cannot protect us. Here, you need to define what the “original” is. Gandhi and Nehru were neither the first nor the last serious members of Congress. Nehru’s father Motilal was there to introduce him to politics and law, Gandhi had his fair share of mentors and cut his teeth in South Africa. If you’re talking about recognizing the original, how many members of the Home Rule era are talked about as much as Gandhi? Even if you say Gandhi rose to more prominence, the History texts, to my knowledge, give a lot more detail about the Satyagrahas and focus more on the post-Gandhi Congress than the pre-Gandhi one. Even otherwise, when I was studying, they didn’t mention much about the pre-independence electoral history of the Congress(they should’ve at least mentioned that elections were a thing given that, even in his autobiography, one of the biggest things Gandhi vied with the British for in South Africa was the Franchise and that Dadhabhai Naoroji became a British MP and, through his influence, sponsored many young men to become barristers. Let’s acknowledge that there are parts of history that were kept out of the books which present a different and new picture of things if they’re added.

1. He got released from Cellular Jail and got restricted to Ratnagiri till 1937, when the newly elected Bombay Presidency government(I believe it was under Congress) released those stipulations. I don’t think he would’ve been as maligned if he had joined Congress instead of the Hindu Mahasabha. I don’t know if he was getting a pension but, under British Rule, elections were held and many Indians were part of the Viceroy’s council. In fact, the British played favorites and pitted particular communities against others. The Justice Party of Madras Presidency was one such example. 2. He did submit 3 mercy petitions to get out of Cellular Jail. He mentions this himself. 3. Savarkar, in his speech at the Abhinav Bharat Society, mentions that he did aim at ousting the British in his own way and through his own methods. He encouraged Hindu youth to join the armed forces specifically so they get military training and undertook elections specifically to put his people in positions of power and aid in the transition. It’s true that he didn’t take part in the Quit India Movement but he was fighting for freedom in his own way and he wasn’t the only one(Chittaranjan Das formed the Swaraj Party specifically because he saw elections and political power as the route to independence as opposed to Satyagraha). There were people fighting battles within and others showing visible opposition.

This is why you can’t compare him even to Bhagat Singh who was facing the noose one way or another. 2. Your definition of “freedom fighter” is restricted to either the Gandhian “Ahimsa” definition or the armed struggle of the mutineers in 1857. This wouldn’t look like a freedom struggle to you but it was a tactic that worked in Ireland. Even Nehru mentions this event in “Glimpses of World History”. Thus, it was a tactic that worked before. Nehru did, in fact, hurt the cause by forcing all the elected officials to resign to take part in the “Quit India Movement”. This led to the arrest of all leaders and allowed Jinnah to consolidate his position.

If you’re going by that, Jinnah was terminally ill around the time he was lobbying for Pakistan. You can’t say Patel would’ve done nothing. In 3 years, he could’ve set up a system strong enough to temper Nehru even after his death(he did, in fact, create the Indian Civil Service as we know it today. With actual power and authority, you can’t say for sure how much more he could’ve done even in the limited time he had). Also, unlike Jinnah, Patel didn’t suffer from a disease. It was a heart attack due to age-related issues and might’ve been a result of the strain he was under(Patel was the guy on the ground organizing the refugee camps and negotiating with the Maharajas). A chunk of his contributions are left out. This is the point that’s stressed so often. In our history books and even in most pre-2014 literature, a good deal of importance is given to Gandhi’s ideas of Satyagraha and not enough is said about the context and the aims of certain Satyagrahas. Even otherwise, Champaran, the Khilafat, Dandi, and Quit India movement, “Satyagrahas” where Gandhi was directly involved, are given more prominence than Kanpur, Kheda or Bardoli, where Patel was involved. Let’s not dress down Patel to justify Nehru and whitewash him. He was a flawed man. Not a saint. If you can accept this fact about Savarkar and others, you can accept it about Nehru.

There is a definite doubt because the Marathas had already established a firm Hindu ecosystem. The British weren’t the first or only colonists vying for power. They came in around the time that Dutch and Portuguese power was waning and competed with the French for dominance(Tipu was seeking to ally with the French). Prior to that, there was a contest between the Mughals, the Marathas, some of the Persianized Muslim Sultans, and a section of Sultans of African origin(Malik Ambar was a “Siddhi” or Muslim of African descent). The Marathas had, at various times, consolidated their rule and reduced the Mughal empire to Delhi. The British aligned themselves with the strongest factions of that time the Marathas and, after eliminating the competition, took over. They did the same with the Sikhs.

Yes, School books needs correction. They does not explain why India despite being a rich and prosperous country failed to stop the invaders centuries ago! We need to find out the cause of this failure so that we can learn from it and stop it happening again. No point in blaming the invaders for what they did to us. That is what the invaders do. We actually should blame the rulers of our country who failed to stop them. In this process, we should question their ability to protect our land, their beliefs and their Gods esp. if these misguided our rulers and made them weak. This introspection of our hindu history is a must to progress. No progress without learning from mistakes and failures! Many hindu leaders including Savarkar are only reiterating the same hindu way of life which once made us slaves of other countries. There should be some concrete positive evidence to go forward with these once failed beliefs. Even now, despite being a hindu rashtra and despite the building of Ram temple, we are still hounded by calamities such as the covid pandemic, floods, storms etc.! There is no respite of any kind! Even the well intentioned financial reforms such as Demonetisation and GST have fall foul of progress. Why?? Time to explore our current religious beliefs. As we can see, these beliefs are again failing us even though Nehru and Congress are still not in power. High time, our much worshiped Gods showed their hands. Are they with us or not? We definitely need to find out. It is the responsibility of this generation to do it. The future generations will never forgive us if we take our country to the old but failed hindu ways of life without any concrete positive evidence to prove its value in nation building and national security.

Our lack of a national identity that encompasses various regional identities is one factor. But I do believe you’re reiterating hearsay from others rather than reading Savarkar and Golwalkar’s own words on the subject. They accept the lack of unity as a factor when it comes to invasion and colonization but unlike Nehru, who clearly seems to favor tearing down the Indian system and putting a system inspired by the West in its place, they favor creating a stronger system with certain guidelines that encompass the best parts of our older system while accommodating the newer experiences of the recent past. I regard this as more constructive than thinking that we’ll get somewhere by just tearing down identities. Why are all Indian youngsters going to liberal christian countries and setting up a nest there? No one wants to come back here even after making hoards of money! There is equality there despite the difference in race, culture and religion. Hinduism will never be considered as a noble religion unless and until its owners agree to truth and reconciliation. They must accept the gross draconian injustice done to the lower caste hindus in the name of Hindu Gods and religion. There must be an yearly remembrance day to repent for this wrong doing. Otherwise these atrocities will happen again. To be honest, I do notsee any of these happening in the foreseeable future. The hindu scriptures have not changed. They are still the same old highly discriminatory documents. So, there is always a high chance that these discriminatory religious diktats will be reintroduced in the name of religious beliefs. The difference we see today is because of our present constitution. Once that is gone there is no guarantee after that. Savarkar and Golwalker may have written books about an ideal scenario, But they themselves and their organisations like Hindu Mahasabha and RSS never preached or practiced it. Sarvarkar himself is silent about his multicultural views even after independence. He was never seen in the public promoting multiculturalism even though every one says it is in his book. Even today, Hindu Mahasabha preaches violence, shows intolerance to dalits and members of other religions. So how can one trust the books of Savarkar and Golwalkar? No one believes it including the members of the mahasabha. My hinduism is about humanity and about the use of sanatan dharma to keep peace and sanity. I am not for violence. For me humanity reins supreme. Do not want to surrender it either to religion or nationalism. There are so many Indians leading a comfortable life outside India and sending almost 100 billion dollars worth of foreign income to India. I do not want to destroy it by entertaining rabid nationalism and/or fanatic religious beliefs. Identity created through our Hindu history and religion will not be a good one for any one of us.
