I'm fully on board about common sense, but I also feel that the other thing that's missing is common DECENCY. So many Americans have stopped caring about others as human beings, and that's the real problem, IMO.

It actually took off in the 80's and had been strengthening ever since. How does the Republican party itself differ from Maga? Maga just says the quiet part out loud, and makes no effort to sugar coat it.
We should be talking more about how the Republican Party grew out of and replaced the Whigs. Give people the concept of reforming a party that has fatally injured itself. A party based on hate won't survive, there needs to be a new party for conservative people.
@@johnarnold893 OK. Some people are more 'about them' and some people are more altruistic. Humans spread themselves over multiple continuums. The me/everyone difference shows up strongly in politics because a lot of politics is how we spend the money we collect from ourselves. Conservatives want an organized voice in the government. They need a new party because their old one was spoiled by its emphasis on hate. The country can benefit from a rational, objective conservative party. A party that can keep spending realistic, looking for efficiencies, and can eliminate regulations that don't serve an important function.
We need serious, sane adults running the government. Vote Democrat for President, Senate, and Representatives. WE MUST REPAIR THE PLANET BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.💙

This is SO on point. I’m so frustrated with “republicans” that are holding on to being an “R”… and not realizing they are in the water. I will have to check out Leigh’s book. She’s very impressive. My 6 times great grandfather (Roger Sherman) signed the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, Constitution and Articles of Association. He’s the only person who signed all four founding documents. I grew up in a family that was very politically engaged, my sister and I used to door knock for local political candidates and my parents were volunteer poll workers. My parents had to stop volunteering at the polls because they didn’t feel safe during the last presidential election. They live in Idaho and people were showing up as “poll watchers” armed with guns. I want to think if Trump loses this election he will fade away but I don’t think we will be that lucky. MAGA has taken over the GOP. The ideology is entrenched in that party. It’s quite frightening to watch.

I registered as a Republican for my first election way back in high school. Over the years I saw changes happening. More and more they were placing party before nation. I tried to use my vote internally for more moderate candidates, but eventually gave up. I am now an Independent and have never looked back. Things in the GOP have not only gotten worse, they've become MONSTROUSLY worse. I do not think its recoverable, and I'm awaiting a time when moderate conservatives realize this and start a new, decent, conservative party. Perhaps spear headed by Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger? But that can't happen while the current MAGA/GOP has any viability.

I did my part already and voted, in person, the first day I could early vote here in Ohio and I voted for Harris/Walz and every Democrat I could on the ballot and I voted YES on Issue 1 as well.

This is what keeps me up at night, that it is ok to lie for political gain without accountability, especially in cases where disinformation hurts people in need. I believe that the lies about the government not acting to help the disaster victims comming from a politician should be a reason for disqualification.
"Don't talk about politics" and "I hate history" are things I remember as early as a kid in the 1960s; today, I believe that was coming from those who wanted people ignorant of the facts so the masses were more controllable.
The ones who wanted that were... the "masses." People often want to feel a sense of control over others. The anti-intellectualism, anti-academia, anti-reason, have been here a whole lot longer than just back to the 60's. What is the number one predictor of someone being a Trump supporter? Being authoritarian minded.
The Bulwark tends to be more conservative, albeit rational conservatives, and Leigh is definitely a Democrat and liberal in the best sense. Her own videos as PoliticsGirl are great, and she’s a more frequent contributor to the Meidas Touch Network.
@@Wud-f2r The Bulwark folks are (all/most?) people who were Republicans but they aren't MAGAs so they've moved to this "new wing" of the Democratic party, at least for now. Thx to both of you for a great discussion. Thx for helping me articulate my own thoughts. I was 19 when Reagan was first elected. I saw how he was dangerous for our country and predicted that eventually women's right to choice would be rescinded. I was told that I was young and naive and didn't understand. Well, here we are. I was born and raised in Louisiana and feel like we're fighting the civil war and the revolutionary war all over again. I think maybe my young naive self was a lot smarter because I wasn't blinded by rhetoric and could just see what was before me. I'm an old woman now, and I know that our young people are smarter than we give them credit for. I see Kamala's campaign strategy honoring our young people. Besides, all the mess we've made is there's to clean up.
I was 18 when Nixon ran, I was telling people then that he was dangerous and decided then that I wasn’t going to be a Republican, ever. Then we come to Reagan, no one listened then either. Then Bush. The Republicans have a reputation for ad candidates.

However, I believe it is vitally important that an immediate housecleaning legal action must be taken on Trump & many others. The question is will anyone in Government hold a so called former criminal President accountable? If not, then this mess will continue to metastasize.

Someone suggested an actual plan to do so with a reasonable chance of success. Start by doubling the size of Congress. All the current representatives get to stay so they aren't voting away their own jobs. I would suggest adding a schedule to work towards getting back to an x people per representative basis, but just for a start, double congress.

I feel the exact same way about this nonsensical rule of not discussing politics and religion! Of course we should discuss them... respectfully, with an open mind and a mindset that it's okay to disagree.
Michael, common sense requires real honesty. It's not a lack of common sense we see everywhere, it's a lack of honesty with ourself and others both. These days when we see many of our politicians appear to be lacking in basic common sense, it's because they're lying to our faces and we're not detecting their attempt to decieve us.

We need an educational commitment to citizenship. We have people full-blown ignorant about government and finance. That's CRIMINAL. We can teach kids algebra later, ffs, but they need to understand credit cards and politics BEFORE they are 18 and making impactful decisions.

The moment companies were allowed to do stock buybacks (1982) was ehen a lot of manufacturing and R&D stagmated. The stock market is looked to more often when deciding public policy than whether a plan will work and if it will help everyone.
