The King's Academy, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence with a Top-5 Nationally-Ranked Fine Arts Program, recently performed the high school premiere of "Newsies" on its main stage in the Page Family Center for Performing Arts. Starring senior Kyle Martin (Jack Kelly), senior Chris Pappas (Crutchie), senior Clay Hider (Davey), and sophomore Olivia Cornett (Katherine Plumber), this musical is said to be one of TKA Theatre Co.'s best.
TKA’s Conservatory of the Arts, a two-time American High School Theatre Festival award-winning fine arts program, is led by Mr. David Snyder (Artistic Director, Musical Theater, Department Chair), Mr. Nathan Adams (Vocal Arts), Mrs. Cathy Higgins (Dance- Ballet, Tap, Modern and Jazz), Mr. Douglas Gawriljuk (Dance- Ballet and Modern), Miss Sarah Fahey (Theatre Arts), Mr. Brad Majzner (Stagecraft), Mr. David Skinner (Instrumental Director), Mr. Wes Lowe (Assistant Band Director), Mr. Patrick Clifford (Strings), Mrs. Macey Norton (Video/Digital Arts), Mrs. Lauren Moxey (Visual Art), Mrs. Stephanie Grasso (Elementary Choir, Woodwinds), and Mrs. Robin Phillips (Piano).

Vicks they are a really good private school with tons of resources. They actually get people from broadway to train them. Their choir or band (don’t remember which one) was at Trump’s inauguration.

@Mary Breckling The thing that i think is funny is they changed the curse words in most of their songs but forgot to get rid off hell. Jack Says the strike starts here right now. Instead of the strike starts right damn now. The prologue Santa Fe (different video from the same playlist though) they also change bastards to scabbers.

I think this is the first production I've seen with actual female Newsies. Usually the female ensemble are made up to look like boys, so this was very refreshing to see.

@@tylerdulski803 I wondered about that, too, because I never heard girl newsies existed. But it seemed plausible. Surely there were poor families who only had daughters and they would do what they had to do to put food on the table. So I Googled it, and found an article that showed a few photos from that time that showed girl newsies. So they apparently did exist, though I'm sure the boys outnumbered them.

I love Crutchie dancing too, but I also get why the other shows didn't add him. Realistically, if you do any fast movements with a bad leg, it's going to hurt because of the speed, momentum, and the air whipping your leg. Also, with the acrobatics in this scene, that would also be impossible for someone with polio because if they're not careful, they might hurt their bad leg even more. So, while I love Crutchie dancing in this scene, I get why the other productions didn't add it.

Oh Kyle Martin as Jack Kelly, Right the Fictional guy I took my Name from. Yeah Disney Added Jack Kelly so it could be a Musical. The Real Organizer was Kid Blink, The guy with the Eye Patch, But it still makes great theater.

This is awesome. Not only are they dancing on newspapers, which is a difficult thing to do, they did handstands! Even Crutchie is dancing, which is awesome to see! This whole number is fantastic. I also love the inclusion of the ensemble and female newsies in this. The harmonies also go really well together. I definitely love how they throw the papers into the stage- when my high school did Newsies, we also had this concept, but the newspapers thrown fell right into the pit... I felt bad for them every time we performed this song.

In my 25 years of surfing the Internet, I have never come across a more professional high school production as you guys did here at The Kings Academy. I really had to do not a double-take, but a triple-take to make sure this was not Broadway! My God you young people are terrific! I hope when you look in the mirror each day you thank God for the talent he has bestowed upon you and that you carry that talent throughout life. On a scale of 1-10, you get a 15. Thank you!

@dunkelfallos I like this song being slowed down because it gives time for every word to resonate with the audience, every sentence. But other songs like Carrying the Banner or Santa Fe… were not meant to be slowed down. I also like Crutchie’s solo, Letter from the Refuge slowed down… same with Once and For All. Same with The World Will Know. But Carrying the Banner, Santa Fe (Jack’s climax, not the prologue. In the case that it’s prologue, then the slowed down version definitely strikes me more than the normal speed), and King of New York weren’t ment to be slowed down.

Yeah. This production is more appropriate for younger children, and better for learners of the songs since they’re more slow-paced, thus better for people who aren’t familiar with the lyrics.
