KTLA in Los Angeles broadcast a live test the year before (1951) but only to local TV viewers. It was not broadcast nationally.

The Nevada Proving Ground, later to be named the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and currently named the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) is still utilized by the U.S. nuclear weapons laboratories to conduct subcritical nuclear experiments. In the late 1940s the public land was temporarily withdrawn from public use by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for conducting nuclear test explosions. Officially, 928 tests were conducted there before the latest versions of subcritical tests replaced the larger tests. Much of that land will likely never be returned to public access due to long-lived radioactive contamination, most of which is buried underground due to the lengthy underground test program. Some people have claimed that the vast testing areas have become national sacrifice zones. A 1997 environmental remedial study estimated that a partial cleanup of the underground test areas could cost approximately $7.29 trillion. The responsible agency, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has assumed that future generations will come up with a more practical solution.
