Rockingham Colliery at Birdwell near Barnsley was owned by the Sheffield-based firm of Newton Chambers and Co. This short film shows the aerial ropeways which were used to convey coal and coke between the colliery and the Thorncliffe Coal Distillation plant. Also shown is the production of coke.

i remember when I was about 2 going for walks with my mam and dad near Ward Green and seeing the methane flame on top of the stacks.

Barnsley lad born and bred grandparents, parents, and myself ,n bro, all involved in this. Sad beyond believe its all gone.
