Sony needs to bring out a new 4K version with the A7s sensor and full XAVC 4096x2160, up to 60fps, and a global shutter.

I'm thinking about buying this either now or one more paycheck. I've been saving up for this for a long while. And the dream of having this is almost here! Thank goodness for you Blunty! It sounds like it's everything I've hoped for. Starting film school in a month and this would be a handy tool to have with me.

Fantastic review as always. I'm still using my CX700VE (bought after your review of same a couple of years ago), and agree wholeheartedly that the control wheel is indeed fiddly, annoying and counter-productive for people wanting to enjoy learning manual control. Great to see vid cameras have gone full-frame; looks like my next video camera needn't be a DSLR after all, but I'm definitely going to wait until at least until there's something sans FiddlyWheel™. Thanks again Blunty!

Excellent review Blunty, you didn't leave any warts unexposed. For the reasons you cited, together with the lack of XLR inputs I opted for the EA50. You did, however, sell me on the HDR-CX700V in your last year's review and for tight places and ghost hunting it is a great camera.

It's an awesome camera. I was seriously thinking about getting the smaller brother of this, the VG20, but I went for the Panasonic GH2 instead (I hacked it to just double the default bitrate) and I haven't regretted the decision.

The dark corners are from the adapter. You must use the fullframe no auto focus adapter.

Blunty, I appreciate your reasons behind your "see for yourself" method of reviewing cameras and I even happen to like it quite a bit myself. I wonder if you'd consider pointing out more specific things that *you* think about the results a little more often though. I can't always tell the difference between two professional grade images even if one is better, and I'd be interested in what a trained eye like yours notices.

Finally I am seeing some competent reviews of this camera. I'm a big fan of the footage you were able to produce from this camcorder too. I'm still not planning on getting this one but maybe I will in the future as a B-Camera, seeing as the FS100 just dropped another $1100 in price last month. But that's my own preference the cam looks top notch aside from a few moire issues I noticed but that's easily manageable for the quality you get from it.

Of course I realize that if I can't tell the difference then it shouldn't matter to me and that's definitely true if I wasn't interested in improving my ability. I'd probably grow to notice the little things the more I photograph, but that could be an expensive lesson to learn and I feel like we could all benefit from the learning you've already had. @Blunty, correct me, if I am wrong, but you have been using LA-EA2 in this review, which has AF, but also is ONLY for APS-C sensors. This vignetting seems to come from this adapter, not from the lens. Thankfully though, A900 comes in a bundle with LA-EA3, which doesn't have AF capabilities, but has wider opening, allowing for using FF lenses on this FF camera without additional vignette.

so it only goes up to 60fps? (50fps, as you mentioned in the EU version) It'd be nice if they could cram in 120fps at the very least. 240 is even becoming more attainable

first, prores and RAW (in this case Cinema DNG) are two quite different things. Second, while the BMPCC is closer to a ready-to-run device than its big brother, given its replaceable battery and hand-held design - I find it unlikely that anyone will be choosing between it, and this camera, they will service quite different production needs.

Except the relatively TINY half-inch sensor & integrated zoom lens in the HXRNX70U makes the aesthetic WILDLY different between the two cameras, and the two are designed for near opposite ends of use-case scenarios. The HXRNX70U is basically an ENG camera, the VG900 has significantly wider use-cases. Probably a good thing you didn't buy the 900, I suspect you've little to no idea what you're doing anyway based on you comparing these two cameras as if they were direct competitors.

The NEX stuff is con/prosumer stuff, the FS line is designed for working professionals. If you're actually choosing between the two, you've made a mistake in figuring out your needs, ability or budget.

You are totally right about the adaptator ! In using a LA-EA3, there is no vignetting.

You used sony's own A99 lense? Their own lenses should not cause vignetting. The lenses should be made for the camera.

The selection of native lenses for the Alpha mount and the e-mount may be smaller than EF - but there's a complete range of practical focal lengths and some very good glass to be had. This is NOT a "cinema" camera, it is not designed to be that, it will not be ideal for that, so the practicality of mounting "cinema lenses" to it is irrelevant.

Does this thing also accept the trans-lucent-mirror autofocus Sony/Minolta A-mount for NEX E-mount adapter? Would love to see what this thing can shoot with good old Minolta or Rokkor prime lenses.

If you use an external recorder (such as the Ninja) you could easily get 220MBs and 4:2:2 out of this thing. Problem is, there are only a handful of sdhc cards that can handle 50MBs+, and then you have to move.up to CF cards, which eliminates most of the prosumer market sony is aiming for with this camera

I'm not sure that would've solved the most glaring quality issues with this camera, namely the relatively low exposure latitude, extreme aliasing problems, and low resolving power. 4:2:2 by itself would only aid with transitions between colors (which is still nice, don't get me wrong) and a higher bitrate would mainly aid with reducing compression artifacts.

***** It's 50 megabits per second (Mb/s), though, not 50 megabytes per second (MB/s). Most if not all Class 10 cards on the market can handle 50 Mb/s with little issue. 50 megabytes per second, though, would be equivalent to 400 megabits per second, which is a huge data-rate for 1080p. Apple ProRes HQ for 1080p, as you pointed out, is 220 Mb/s.

I'm reading my own SDHC card right now, it's MB/s, not Mb/s, but that's beside the point. Most SD cards (class 10 UHS-1 included) are rated for an average write speed of 45 MB/s, and above that there are only a few that currently exist. You're probably thinking of the read speeds, which is almost always much higher on SD cards, and in some cases not properly labeled. Though you are correct on the speed translations from MB/s to Mb/s and their use in the 1080p arena, the fact is, 400Mb/s barely qualifies as acceptable for 2.5k or 4k video. Also, the 220Mb/s is also Avid DNxHD compliant. ;)

I really don't get the lack of XLR. Seems like sony was holding back. Also, the need for an adapter to actually get full frame is just plane stupid. Seriously. The main selling point over the other cams is full frame, yet you need an adapter. /facepalm

The A mount was designed for reflex camera designs... it was inappropriate for the NEX line as it was designed to be an APSC based compact mirrorless system. The adapter exists to allow people who already owned Alpha glass to use it if they wished in the NEX line also. It would have been IDIOTIC to design the NEX line to simply use the Alpha lenses natively, they'd have have to be MUCH larger to accomodate the back focal distance & the POINT of the NEX line was to make things compact.

That is not the adapter used here. that one has no phase detect You will need the LAEA4 which has been announced a couple of days ago.

Great review. I really like this camera, I'm torn between this and a DSLR. Any way to know if that vignette will happen with a particular lens. Thats would be a problem. Any experience with the kit lens?

i always liked how videos shot with sony cameras looked. if i had the money right now, i'd be buying one of those in a heartbeat. i always disliked how awkward it was to handle a DSLR in comparison to a camera designed for shooting moving pictures.

That bit about having to use an adapter for full frame may have just turned me off this camera. Seems like a major flaw. It really seems like a practical tool for sports filming, quick set up and adjustments can make a big difference when security is headed your way.

The one thing I can say about the adapter is that, while it does seem odd that one is required to use the main feature of the camera, everywhere I have seen it sells it with the adapter included. In fact, if you buy it on B&H, they'll through in an Alpha mount lens and one E-mount lens for FREE AND THE ADAPTER all for the regular price. With a deal like that, this camera is more than worth it. Buying it anywhere else, probably not.

I have been looking for a camcorder with all the DSLR good points and Sony easy use and this is going to be my new BABY. Excellent review...This video has made my mind up. I will look out for those lens that blacked the sides he he ....

I have a Nex-5 and a Sony A58 and I have decided to get one of these camera's as I have already invested in some nice len's for my A58 and this camera will let me continue to do so without have to reinvest into new lens. I was thinking of spending a bit more on the Sony 4K Ax1 for its 4K but really thats still a few years away from being required and by then I am sure there will be other and most likely better options. Also the fact the VG900 is a full frame really has be interested in getting one. Watching your video helped me make my final choice to get the VG900 so thank you.

This tells me again that Sony really know what they are doing when it comes to the NEX line. I just hope they nurture it and we can watch it give the m4/3 system a run for it's money :D. And yes I know it's apples and pears but I still want good competition in the mirrorless market so we can all reap the rewards. Cheers for the review.

I know that this is a review of the camera itself, but I am wondering, how do you feel about the lens selection available for this camera? I'm sure, as you mentioned, that various adapters can be gotten but that isn't exactly ideal. Do you think this would be more compelling if the VG900 could use say, Canon EF mounts, as they do have excellent cinema lenses?

I doubt it... but I wouldn't count it out entirely. Sony ARE playing with FF compact cameras (see the bewilderingly good - and expensive - RX1).

after some research i found it he will need to use the Sony LA-E4 adapter which has been announced yesterday. or the older non autofocus one. At least this issue can be solved by a $350 dollar adapter.

D'oh! I'm an idiot. :)) Never considered the back focal distance. NOW I can see why they stuck with the E mount. Still seems a little awkward though, the E lense not being able to fully expose the sensor. Then having to use adaptors to use an A series lens to get full frame.

It's a shame than IS/OSS isn't supported with this camera when using FF lenses, only via E-Mount lens

Why, oh why do we now have ANOTHER lens format? Wouldn't it have been more prudent to stick with the 'A' mount? Especially since you mention that you don't get full-frame unless you use an E to A adapter? Sony make very good cameras, but they seem to be more versant on 'shooting themselves in the foot' when it comes to versatility & clawing ahead of the competition. :|

It's not that bad, though I am not completely sold on it as of yet. Id still be more inclined to purchase something like Canon's 5D Mark III before purchasing this camera. Saying that, I do have a love for Sony's more expensive FS-100 and FS-700.. Sadly, I cannot afford either currently. I do like the advantages the VG 900 compared to the drawbacks every DSLR I'd have to see the other full frame lenses on this unit.

The uses Sony LA-E4 the af system of the alpha 65. Not a bad system but since this is full frame the af point will all be in the middle. so you can't focus on points at the sides.

The blackmagic is NOT "cheaper", not once you realize you need to buy a bunch of stuff to make it practical, like a proper battery solution, cages grips and handles, a shoulder rig, an EVF solution, microphones and dedicated audio recorders etc etc etc. The Blackmagic is NOT and out of box ready-to-run solution like the VG900 is.

I love my a550 & would love to have a video camera like the VG900, but having 2 different lense formats means that my kit will be that much heavier & will probably end up deciding on whether to shoot video, or still on any given day. Maybe Sony could design a collapsible hand truck I can wheel it all around with, then I might be consoled. XD

Yo, @Blunty3000 You were using a full frame lens on a crop adapter, the la-ea2. Of course you would have vignetting in full frame mode... Try again with an la-ea3. They're supposed to come with the vg-900... :{P

You have to use full frame alpha lenses instead of SAM aps-c lenses:)

I purchased this camcorder. It would be amazing except for the bad aliasing / moire problem. You can see it at 6:40 and 9:40. It's bad in full frame and horrible in crop mode. Anything that can be done to correct this? Otherwise I love the camera but the moire totally ruins it for professional film-like cinematography use.

E mount is designed for APSC it would have been so much easier if this was a A mount. I could use all my A mount lenses without the need to buy a expensive adapter which is not as fast as a lens mounted directly ... sigh

Great video and I learned something new, that my emount lens won't work well on this camera. One question what is your workflow with the mts files to get good results on youtube? I normally convert to pro res then import to FCP X and then upload but the results never look that good, any help would be good. Cheers Lee
