It's finally time to start building the deck for the backyard NexDome observatory. In this video we look at the 3D model and talk about the different building materials we will be using, how the design was thought up, and a few notes on why an octagonal deck might be a better idea than something square or rectangular.

Hi, should the pier be exactly in the center column? I have seen their schematics to vs anyway 10.6" away.

It shouldn't be in the center. I have such a small scope though that it's not really an issue for me. Although, if I ever get a larger scope I might need to move the pier, which isn't a very exciting idea...haha. The pier should be placed so that the mounts center of rotation (where the RA and Dad axis converge) is in the exact center. That will result in the best geometry.

Save yourself the hassle digging and rent a hole borer for the day! How are you going to manage the door area if you are doing a circular build, is it sill low to the ground so you can step in off the field? With the square deck, it does give you nice area for door access.

Actually the holes are already dug! I did use an auger. It was a huge help. As for the door, my plan is to put a small landing on the downhill side of the observatory aligned with the door to the dome. It should work out perfectly. I’ll make a video about it once it’s done!
