The premise that the fantasy genre is dead, consumed by the isekai genre is off base, considering the anime of the year is Frieren. And although set in our own, but alternate world, Demon Slayer incorporates many fantasy elements (among other genres) in its excellent tapestry. Isekai is THE thing at the moment, and as long as it sells, will continue to do so, with its almost irresistible hook to drag in the viewer/reader. But ultimately, an anime rises or falls based on its own merits. This show has an interesting premise, a sort of fantasy version of Suicide Squad or the French Foreign Legion notion of the dregs of society/villains/criminals serving in the front lines against an enemy. We have the preview, but no release date, so we're likely looking at Fall or Winter. Getting back to the other point, an isekai does not require reincarnation. It just needs to put the character(s) in another world and is a more blatant way to get the audience to self-identify with the MC. This can be done by reincarnation, summoning, entering a VR world, etc. It often involves fantasy settings, so the point that it overlaps with the fantasy genre is valid. But, of course, it doesn't have to be a fantasy setting, it can be any type of world, so don't be surprised if we see isekais branching more heavily into other genres such as scifi, horror, etc. For example, we've recently seen a run on villainess shows in the isekai genre. People are always after the next big thing, and whenever that arrives, there always have been those who copy it, with some even improving upon whatever the next big idea might be. Today, isekai. Tomorrow...?

There are 2 isekai LNs that I'm surprised that they haven't been adapted into anime yet. The Magic In This Other World Is Way Too Far Behind, and The Record Of Wortenia War.

SAO is not isakai. There should be a term for the trope where the protaginist plays a game. They were'nt "VOLENTIERED" to fight the big bad. They did'nt go to sleep and wake up in another world e.t.c. The first sao had them trapped in a game. If they "died" in the game their brains got fried by the vr helmet they were wearing irl.

You wish isekai would die, but I re watch every isekai at least once a month, you want it to have something to do about how good it looks or how unique and interesting a story is.. character development or “plot” It’s not about that Anime isn’t about a look or a message It’s not about how many times a troupe has been used I like watching what I like and you need to get over it Everyone should shut up about it I’m going to re watch campfire cooking in another world for the 4th time now.. do something about it or shut up. So how is this not an isekai? I think of any character in any word that is not their own with skills not common of the time or place an isekai. Reincarnation is not crucial, they could be in a game or teleported there for some reason.

Fun fact tho u might already know this "isekai" means "another world" not in the sense that mc dies and gets reincarnated, in fact it just means that the anime mostly or completely takes place in a "different world" that's why sao is considered an "isekai". It takes place mostly in the game world... I don't remember many episodes actually being about real life (out of the game). In the end, isekai is just a sub genre of fantasy.

It gives you the perspective of a person who you might relate with instead of someone who grew up in a completely different world. It's not that hard to find common ground with someone who has only lived in a rural village with no modern conveniences, but on the other hand they might not have the same experiences as someone like Rudius and the mental scars that he had to overcome, so both can be good. Either way it's about escapism and getting away from the things that get you down to watch someone else overcome their problems and be inspired.

If you hate isekai, don't watch it. I don't like sports, but I'm not sitting here wishing they'd stop making sports anime. All the people who want isekai to stop or slow down are dumb. I don't care if you hate it. I like it. I want more. It's a great concept and genre.
