1938 Los Angeles is a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. Nathan Lane is incredible as Lewis. I love that he is tough but also endearing. He and Daniel Zovatto as Tiago make a solid detective duo. Looking forward to this new episode.

Agreed. Nathan Lane is so versatile. Max, Albert in "The Birdcage", Timon in "The Lion King" movies and now Lewis. Love his dramatic role here.

This show is not all that bad, the atmosphere and setting are recreated beautifully and meticulously, but it lacks any kind of suspense to be called Penny Dreadful. I can't help but have a feeling it was a mistake on the showrunner's or scriptwriter's part to reveal from the very begining that Alex, Rio and Elsa are all Magda's avatars, all their scenes, especially Elsa's, lose the impact and sense of drama when you know that they are not real persons. They should have been played by different actresses and their real identity should have been revealed at the very end of the season.

I see this as different. True detective style. I dont cross either with each other. I think the creator has done a fantastic job with the drama. You may have a point with the demon but I think it's fine how it is. The acting is superb and we get to see that the demon doesn't always get her way.

@@willtorres7250 Yes, the acting is mostly good, but it's hardly a true detective either since there is, as I said earlier, no suspense, and the mystery is pretty obvious since the audience knows the identity and motives of Magda's avatars.

I'm starting to enjoy the new one better, the pacing time is better, more action, the characters are more likeable and it's the first golden Hollywood era thing I've ever seen where minorities are the main characters, it's also crazy that the racism shown in this show set in 1938 still happens today, not sure if you heard about George Floyd, the black boy that was brutally murdered by white officers they've been fired but still free. Meanwhile some white CEO (I forgot his name) has been caught with child pornography rape and bestiality videos and no one kicked him to death he only got 200 days in jail. This happens nearly every day, unnamed black or brown kids gunned down by white cops and they don't get punished or jailed and white people getting small sentences for commiting murder and rape. USA has not evolved at all since the 1930s sadly so stories like City of Angels have to be told.

That is an interesting take Cyril. I was curious as to why they started with that revelation as well, although I feel that casting Natalie as the various incarnations was brilliant! They still could have played it straight, but their decision was obviously very intentional. Perhaps there is still a big reveal waiting in the wings? Either way, I will keep watching!

@@maciel.4539 oh me too!!! I am so in love with Eva character already!! Marton Csokas was Eva's boyfriend in real life around 2005. I don't know if you like him or meet him, but he has experience in movies about mistery. In fact filmed one with Emilia Clarke titled Voices from the Stone, that is amazing

I am thoroughly enjoying this latest iteration of Penny Dreadful, and not solely because it stars the incomparable Natalie Dormer! Nathan Lane and Daniel Zovatto could easily carry a weekly detective show that never dreamed of demons. The entire cast, in fact, has been stellar. Though it may seem a slow burn at times, I've found it both engaging and suspenseful. The setting has kindled a curiosity in me that will drive some personal research and probably spur subsequent viewings for that alone. I am reluctant to pass final judgement with five unaired episodes, but thus far both thumbs are way up! I'm hitchhiking in space!!! 😁

Unfortunately a lot 9f people are already shitting on the show, it's practically guaranteed a second season based on cast and it being a Penny Dreadful franchise but unfortunately it's future is kinda up in the air.

I completely agree with you that Nathan Lane and Daniel Zovatto are both in their elements here as the detective duo. Drama really suits Nathan. Stellar cast overall. Natalie Dormer in multiple roles is exquisite. Great story with powerful themes too. The show deserves a Season 2.

lol i´d say people do not know how to respect contrary opinions. As soon as you say that this show is not as good as the original, they insult you for free or send you off. But they are nobody to silence the others, to shut them up. Furthermore, those who say that demonstrate great ignorance, since very interesting conclusions can be drawn from the conversation between two different positions, much better than between two who lick each other's ass.

In addition to a show directed for educated minorities, with lines in the script that were a clear reference to the psychological philosophy of the great authors of the Victorian horror and to their vision of the world mixed with that of Logan: Shelley, Wilde, Clare, Stevenson, the beauty in Wordsworth's poetry ....something that fans of the new Penny Dreadful may not appreciate. Penny Dreadful is a song to the mankind, not to the races. All us are humans, people. This new show is something different, with its own charm and style for its fans, i can accept it. But for many of us the glory belongs to Penny Dreadful, i don´t need to say the original, is not neccesary. PD is only the first.

@Divayth Fyr we has the chance of get Vanessa's reincarnation played maybe by Eva Green again helping Sir Malcolm's Company with Ethan as lover and see what Logan promised to us letting them appear in the series: the development of Dr. Jekyll as Mr. Hyde, Ferdinand finding the Mummy In Egypt, Catriona and her true identity as time traveller being the daughter of Alexander Hartdegen, Sir Malcolm experience in the West. Lily finding a new purpuse....all for what we suffer, fight and wait in all those victorian great characters. John Clare's destiny in the Polo again maybe, there were a thousand of combinations. City of Angels is what Logan offers us in change. It is not a matter if being a good or bad show, is just about dissapointment . We want Eva Green. At last we have her in The Luminaries playing another kind of Vanessa Ives. Show of Angels is the ugly sis from the original PD we can conclude. I mean you can find a great latin mythology there but is different. It lacks of the original series greatness

I loved Dracula, he was a really interesting character (and personally I think he really did love Vanessa) I want to see more of Catriona, we didn't saw enough of her... I want to see more of Ferdinand Lyle, Florence Seward, of Sir Malcolm... I miss them
