Next Semester: The Cycle of Mental Health - Twenty one pilots analysis/theory

Next Semester is the latest single to be released on Clancy and man, the pilots really woke up and chose violence with deciding to release this one.
Despite the emotionally charged lyrics, it can be easy to become a bit lost on the meaning of the song therefore this video aims to analyse the song and it's meaning.
And perhaps, possibly reveal some insights into the Dema lore as well
As always, I'll also give my rating on the song.
I rate Next semester a 10/10, the lyrics had me crying and screaming on my knees with its two door cinema club-esque beat
songs used:
- Trapdoor, twenty one pilots
- Implicit Demand for Proof, twenty one pilots
- Isle of the flightless birds, twenty one pilots

it's truly fascinating the lessons and stories Twenty One Pilots weave into their songs. I think that's what makes them so relatable and so fun to listen to. This is such an incredible song with a great story/message, and a great video explaining it!

Oh my gosh your interpretation of the different reactions Tyler has to the car passing him is genius! Especially when he's wearing the Clancy mask, I think in Overcompensate we learned that maybe Clancy has a tendency to be too confident and wants to push the boundaries of what is established to see how far it can take him. Waiting until the last moment before the car was to strike him not only shows facing the issues head on, but is, to me, a statement of "Try me, I'm not scared of you, see what I can do" Also, just gonna casually put the thought out there that a dangerous bend symbol is indeed a road sign, so he's consistently disregarding the warning signs and threats thar are on his way. The boys just love the symbolism of roads, cars, being a passenger (HDS, Taxi Cab) or in fact driving away (A Car, A Torch, A Death), and I love to see that motive continue in new ways.
@beats_city0911
@beats_city0911 2 месяца назад
13:52 man, that's insane, when wearing Clancy mask he's indeed in control, without any fear of the car. Also HDS reference, Fake You Out, Truce, the cycle repeating and time references... Dema, I'm so impressed by this analysis. Really. Top job. You said that you were proud of your Overcompensate analysis, but I think with this one you outdid yourself. Continue that pride. What I really love about twenty one pilots is that when I come back to these songs, these lyrics and music videos there is always so, so much more connections to their other tracks and the lore, so I can see how this one turned out to be one of the most difficult analyses. I initially didn't see so many references in Next Semester but you proved me wrong. 💜

What an awesome intro! What surprised me were caesura, sibilance conjunction and enjambent techniques as they are new for me. I think those are really interesting ones and it gave me a new point of view when it comes to anxiety and mental illness representation in lyrics. Your linguistic knowledge when analysing songs is a real treasure. By the way, what do you think about the comparison of these 2 songs from new album to first two songs from trench? I heard somewhere that they are kinda the opposite take. Jumpsuit video - being trapped by Nico, anxiety wins, Overcompensate - feelin in power, in control and able to escape. Meanwhile NATN video - dema don't control us, escaping dema, feeling in power, Next Semester - being not in control, being trapped by anxiety. First song from Trench and first one form Clancy give me the opposite feeling as well as second ones from both albums. Fantastic video as always, my favourite fictional city 💜 Thanks for posting 💜

Glad you enjoyed the vid, and I'm always happy to talk about new literary techniques! I like to think my old English teacher would shed a tear in happiness seeing these videos knowing that I'm still continuing with my analyses and what not lmao. As for comparison, I haven't thought about it much but you bring up a really compelling point; Clancy is meant to be the true sequel to trench, after all, so it makes sense that it would reflect trench by having tracks that would be the opposite of it.

Great video! I’m sorry if you mentioned this and I didn’t notice, but when you said that the yellow dashes divide life and death, I remembered the car that is about to hit Tyler is driving in the middle of the road, might mean stuff
@Good_Day_Dema
@Good_Day_Dema 2 месяца назад
That could likely have a few interpretations although I didn't mention them as there isn't a lot to back it up apart from speculation. 1.) the car, a representation of mental illness, is the bridge between life and death. 2.) as a representation of mental illness, it shows the car is out of control as it isn't exactly picking a side, rather staying centre and swerving like in HDS.

Great video! From the get go I interpreted the line "I prayed those lights would take me home, then I heard, hey kid, get out of the road" less as a direct suicide reference with an oncoming car, but more about the anxiety that comes with growing up. There's an element of daydreaming in the chours, looking deeply at the lights and praying they will take you home to me sounds like searching for a meaning. That daydreaming and naive attitude breaks when someone yells "hey get out of the road" as in saying "hey, grow up, touch the groung, the lights won't save you." That's why that line directly takes us out of the melodic and haunting chrous staright to the up-beat tempo of anxiety.

Firstly, I have to praise the effort you put in your videos: not only the analisys is super deep, crystal clear and always spot on, but also the editing is always getting better. That being said, I'd like to bring attention to the last lines: "Can't change what you've done. Start fresh next semester." In any type of recovery, there will be relapses. If you blame yourself too much for the relapses, you won't have the confidence to continue your path to recovery. So we need to learn to forgive ourselves, since we can't change the past, and focus on the future.

Okay I have a crazy theory: Red tapes suddenly appeared covering eyes on Vessel, Blurryface, Trench and SAI, but not on Clancy. What if they add the red tape after the full album comes out? Maybe not exactly the moment everything comes out but like a day or a week after, so we can try to figure everything out. If Clancy dies, they might add the tapes. This music video might actually show Clancy's death because: 9:43 cars drive on the right side of the road. In the video we see Tyler jumping to the left twice, then once to the right and then once with a mask to the left. Could this mean he jumped into the car? Clancy under the mask was someone else, someone dead in the video for Overcompensate and the Clancy mask just so happened to appear after he jumped to the right. Maybe they actually link together? What if the whole album's gonna be a big puzzle with a smooth transitions into other songs on the album, just shuffled? Would this explain all the music videos? What if they create one giant movie if this is true? Very unlikely, but if this comes out somehow to be the truth, it would make Clancy the coolest album of all time It sounds ridiculous I know, I am probably onto nothing, but maybe? If you see any flaws feel free to inform me I could very easily miss something obvious
@Good_Day_Dema
@Good_Day_Dema 2 месяца назад
Judging by your comment, I'm going from the notion that you believe this MV is lore related, but feel free to correct me if my understanding is wrong. If that's the case, there are only three flaws I can think of: 1.) setting does not match Dema or Trench; we can see this from the use of different colours where Dema is established to be monochrome as well as the fact that the people are wearing normal civilian clothes rather than the uniformed grey we see in Dema and the uniforms in trench. 2.) the car doesn't actually drive on a set side of the road. Much like HDS, the car drives in the centre of the road. 3.) Following the lyrics of the chorus, Tyler in the road is actually a flashback, and those instances where he dodges are several flashbacks compiled together. If Clancy died in this MV, then it wouldn't make sense for Tyler specifically to have a flashback to it. Apart from that, it's a good theory!

I love this video! Your interpretations of the songs & MVs are always so good. I fear for you on May 17th, though, when all the videos drop, lmao. I think what's great about Next Semester is that it's just as understandable at face value as it is after a deep-dive. With the knowledge from Tyler that it's about a panic attack, the cyclical structure of the song feels, to me, like someone reliving a traumatic moment (i.e. a panic attack) over and over, trying to find a way to make this major weakness into a strength or maybe to overcome it was a way to PROVE your strength. "Hey kid, get out of the road!" feels like the moment Tyler was snapped out of that moment, and so it's where the memory ends. Next Semester in general also just FEELS like a panic attack. You feel it start to come on, and then it explodes and you're freaking out, everything is chaos, and maybe you're dying??? But you get a few moments of clarity before it starts to die down and then you're just exhausted, numb, and maybe crying just a little (a lot). It's a seriously relatable song to me with all the interpretations in mind, but the cycle of mental health & suicide theory definitely hits the hardest being someone who regularly struggles with suicidal ideation. Again, fantastic video. Wishing you luck for May 17th! Don't be afraid to reach out if you need help with those videos lol, this community would totally back you up.

I guess my fear would be that we end in the car on the same ending scene from Heavydirtysoul without any changes. But if we end in the car with Tyler in control, going someplace new - yeah, I can be onboard for that. 😎

8.5/10 for me. Lyrics were never my strong suit and especially when it’s about topics such as Death. I’m only familiar with any words that go along with the words listed: bishop, dema, vialism, trash the dragon, Nico, Josh Dun, not done, the air begins to feel a little thin, etc., etc.

Interesting how he literally “bows out” of the video, with the secondary meaning of “bowing out” (of life? of the cycle?). Another thought I’ve had is that “can’t change what you’ve done” could mean that Tyler is telling himself and anyone listening that if one dies by s******, you will not be able to undo it, and that “next semester” would be in the next life, whether the afterlife or reincarnated. Stay alive. ❤

I have a new theory based on your overcompensate analysis, which I find very credible. I kept asking myself in what way this whole danger of overcompensating thing would relate to Tyler's psyche irl. Because after all the whole dema lore represents Tyler's psyche. So why would it be dangerous to stand confidently against mental illness? I personally think, next semester gives a hint regarding this problem. The line: "can't change what you've done ". Maybe it implies that the real goal is to accept dema, accept your past, stop denying what you've done. Accepting this part and living on while healing it instead of splitting your own psyche in good and bad. In many songs Tyler's talks about him denying himself and what he's done... so I think accepting the past could be a way of breaking the circle. Idk if that makes any sense and sorry if my english isn't good lol. Thanks for your video's dema❤

Dema I’m totally not on Reddit looking for a guy that looks like Tyler I’m totally fine 🥲 I LOVE THIS VIDEO OMGGGG. I imagine if the car had a face it would be looking confused as Tyler is playing his uke calmly

14:05 In support of your theory, notice how the car is driving on the yellow, in the middle of the road. It's never given any mind through the video, but cars aren't supposed to do that. I think Tyler VS the car has a deeper meaning. Also, I can see some religious symbolism in this song.

So is there really something that happened with a car in Tyler’s past? A Car a torch a death, taxi cab, fake you out, car radio, lane boy, ride, heavy dirty soul, every trench music video, the outside, overcompensate, and now next semester all have a vehicle or road reference. Imagine that guy didn’t swerve no top music 😭

That and there are a lot of references to Clancy way, a street where Tyler used to live (the goner MV is even filmed there)

Correct me if I’m wrong but shouldn’t there be ten bishops? Why is it called Nico and the Niners, not Nico and the Eight?

Honestly no clue, could be an oversight on the boys' part, or potentially a reference to how Nicolas Bourbaki was never a real person, yet was considered real given the sheer belief the bourbaki group had in the avatar

this is the best analysis i have watched by far, i was so blown away like every 5 minutes, its so crazy how many different types of language Tyler uses to tell us stuff and really showcase the big meaning of the song. like the sibilant sound and the more structural techniques when writing songs. it amazing that your able to showcase that with details and examples in the songs, as well as linking it to other songs they have created and the rest of the clancy album. then your able to use that info to make educated guesses on next lore and the rest of the album saying that its going to be about the cycle and how he breaks it. your actually amazing at this and i love your work. i would have never gotten this deep into the story/lore in my life so thankyou for blowing up my mind. @Good_Day_Dema @Good_Day_dema 💛❤💛❤💛❤💛❤
