About the Piece:
Ney Rosauro writes:
BRAZILIAN LANDSCAPE is a fantasy that depicts a musical journey through Brazil. Starting with a very soft lento motive, the work presents a lyrical melody in the rhythm of baiao with a long development and increasing tension. After reaching its climax the theme returns with to the same very soft lento motive from the beginning. This work is essentially a transcribed version of an improvisation that I commonly played on concerts for over ten years.
About the composer:
Ney Rosauro is recognized as one of the most original and dynamic symphonic percussionists and composers today. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on October 24, 1952, he started studying percussion in 1977 with Luiz Anunciação of the Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira in Rio de Janeiro.
Mr. Rosauro studied Composition and Conducting at the Universidade de Brasilia (Brazil). He then received the Masters Degree in Percussion at the Hochschule fur Musik Wurzburg in Germany under Prof. Siegfried Fink. He completed his Doctorate at the University of Miami under the supervision of Fred Wickstrom.
From 1975 to 1987 he was percussion instructor at the Escola de Musica de Brasilia, and timpanist with the Orquestra do Teatro Nacional de Brasilia in Brazil.
From 1987 until 2000 he directed the Percussion Department at the Federal University of Santa Maria, RS in Brazil. From 2000 until 2009 he was director of Percussion Studies at the University of Miami, Florida.
As a composer he has published more than 50 pieces for percussion as well as several method books. His compositions are very popular worldwide and have been recorded by internationally acclaimed artists such as Evelyn Glennie and the London Symphony Orchestra. His Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra has been performed by over 2,000 different orchestras worldwide, and his nine solo CDs have received critical acclaim and been hailed by percussionists and general music-lovers alike.
Ney Rosauro has appeared in concert solo, and as a soloist with orchestras, in more than 35 different countries, including the most prestigious International Percussion Festivals.

Can someone tell me why there are several spots where he adds stuff that isn't in the sheet music? Why make sheet music that isn't accurate? I don't get it

The piece is most likely an improvisation that he's worked on for years. The sheet music is a road map of his general form in a way that anyone can learn. He deviates because it's probably never really been set in stone and evolves with every performance.

+kablah19 This comment, is old, but Tyler is correct. Ney came to my high school last year and we played his music for a percussion ensemble concert (Well, not me, I was too inexperienced at the time) But included as part of the performance was this solo that a good friend of mine Dylan played. He actually met with Ney Rosauro and played it, and Ney said the main tune he plays at the beginning that shows up a few times in the piece was originally improvised, and he loved it so much he decided to write a song out of it :) so he probably changes it a little every time he plays it since to him it probably it still feels like improvisation.

Absolutely love this song, unfortunately this song is way too much for me to handle.

A monkey can get something perfect given enough time, the key is to be musical enough to not play this piece like a computer, or a monkey for the sake of the example. Some funny rhythms between hands, dotted 8th/16th notes on 1 and 3 on the left while youre doing some weird triplets on the right. That to say.... as a senior in a highscool with a bad music program I was able to monkey my way through this YOU GOT THIS.
