#NFFC Nottingham Forest manager Brian #Clough interviewed on Clive Anderson show circa 1994: talks Peter #Taylor, England team job, #Birtles, Tony #Adams, Clive's an #Arsenal fan et al.
I've bought all the Brian Clough books and can't get enough of clips like this. A good interview. Nothing seems to phase him and he has a real gift of quick wit and management control
I think he was a fascinating character anyway, without the football. DUncan Hamilton's "Provided You Don't Kiss Me" is worth a read. Very poignant but some funny moments too. The book starts with Clough banning him from the club.
My wife and I met Brian once at a book trade show and he signed multiple copies of his new book for us to take back to our bookshop.Had an hilarious ten minutes with him, lovely friendly guy with a real twinkle in his eye.Thank you Brian RIP.
Possibly 2 or 3 out of 4 - '78, '82, '90 '98 (I know we never qualified for '78 but this shit is hypothetical) Would have been possibly at least 10 different names in each of the 4 squads and a completely different style of play - i.e not petrified of the opposition and everyone told to go out and express what they were best at. We are still in the same position with Southgate. We also were the same under Venables. Le Tiss would have been the player Clough built the team around then....like Spain did with the great Iniesta. Le Tiss was better than him! We have always been reticent to play the mavericks. Imagine if Frank Worthington had been Italian.....first name on the sheet. Harry Redknapp was our last chance as far as I can see.
Brian was a one of a kind legend, true and open and never forget his Middlesbrough roots, RIP Brian, there will never be another one like you in football
Yes, he was a master of all that, a real natural showman. Well, much more than a showman of course, but he could doubtless have made a living in entertainment or broadcasting quite apart from football.
First time watching this interview, so thanks for the upload. Clive Anderson with all his cunning wit, couldn't outwit Cloughie. Cloughie was a one-off. One of my favourite football managers.
Well put. I actually thought Anderson was a bit disrespectful during the interview trying to get a rise out of Brian. In fairness to Clough he tells it like it is regardless of who he offends. Sadly, he wouldn't be received well these days but what a man!
He once punched Roy Keane in the dressing room after he kept playing the ball back to the keeper. Keane just sucked it up and took it whereas nowadays Clough would’ve been sacked and there’d be an internal investigation and multiple club statements.
Good interview. Cloughie was always a good talker and it makes a nice change to see an interviewer capable of taking him on with banter rather than the usual boring deference.
Purely because of this wonderful man, and to some extent his equally likable sidekick, I retain a soft spot for Nottingham Forest to this very day. They don't make them like Brian anymore and more's the pity.
E.T. Wash your bloody mouth out "young man" Don't ever call us "Notts"... we are either Nottingham Forest, Nottm Forest, or just simply Forest. Just thought I'd clear that up for ya "OK" 👂🏼✋🏼
So true. Cloughie was a staunch Labour man but can you imagine what he`d make of the party today? I often wonder what he`d have to say about all these soppy little woke warriors that have hijacked left wing politics. They`d have a complete fucking meltdown every time he came on the box.
I love that N. East accent (Michael Sheen got it spot on in The Damned Utd)... my mum's from Redcar, Cleveland, gran too............ and despite moving away, she's still got that accent.
As a Nottingham lad born and bred, I've great memories. He was the greatest manager we ever had at Forest... Took us from nowhere to European champions twice.. In fact turned average players into world class ones.. Him and let's not forget the great Peter Taylor had the midus touch that comes once in a generation etc etc...
Remember assuming (based on everything we were told) that Clough was past it when Forest went down and had succumbed to alcoholism etc. Amazing then to see him in this interview as sharp as a tack and full of charisma. If he’d managed nowadays he would have gone on for another 15 years.
Imagine what he'd say about modern day players...Told it like it was and took no s**t off anyone. He turned average players into European champions. One of the greatest managers ever and if he'd got the England job, we wouldn't be talking about one world cup right now.
Gone for a long time now but watching Brian like this brings back memories what a great man he was...sorely sorely missed by everyone, loved to of played under him...everyone at a certain age can name everyone of his Nottm Forest players of the 2 European Cup Final Wins !!
When the police cover-up of the Hillsborough disaster was exposed Cloughie made a point of publicly retracting his earlier comments, such as those he expresses in this interview, and apologising for them. Had he known the police were actually responsible for what happened he would have offered his unwavering support for Liverpool FC in their campaign for justice. I've never met a Liverpool fan who's expressed anger towards Cloughie for what he said.
@tweedlio2763 "What he said was the truth"? Really? You ought to be ashamed of that comment, given the Hillsborough families unwavering and dignified quest to disprove such insights.
@@chrisbayes2972 well, since no one was eventually charged, everyone were acquitted, so it seems the courts feel they weren't to blame? It might not be concur with your opinion though
As a Scot I've said for years Football Snobbery at FA owe every England fan an apology for not allowing who would've been most successful England World Cup winning manager ever Clough I believe would've gotten England to regular World Cup Final .Don Revie couldn't lace Brians boots .Table off Football Masters has Busby Stein Shankly Clough & Taylor making the brew.
Good to hear a man of such high regard just say the truth about hillsborough. As he says he regretted causing offence but that still doesn’t stop it being true
No, what stops it being true is simply that there is no evidence that any of it happened the way he said, and LOADS of evidence that it happened differently. The stubborn stupidity required to persist with Clough's bullsh*t version of what happened is amazing. And you have that amazing stupidity in truckloads clearly. He said Liverpool fans turned up late. They didn't, the people involved in the crush were all there well before the 2:45pm arrival time advised on the tickets. He said Liverpool fans were drinking in pubs when they should have got in earlier. They weren't, the alcohol intake was found to be unusually low for a Cup semi-final day. He said Forest fans got in early and with no signs of disorder. They didn't, and there were. There was a minor crush outside the Kop end of the ground around 2:35pm, and a gate was opened at that end to let scores of Forest fans in to lower the pressure. (Source: WPC Debra Martin.) He thought lots of fans were ticketless. They weren't. Subsequent analysis of the CCTV footage and the records of the stadium admissions system found that the attendance on the day roughly matched the ticket allocation. What ignoramuses like you - and indeed Clough at the time - don't get is that there was a bottleneck at the West end of the stadium, a serious one that had caused major delays to the starts of various semi-finals played at Hillsborough over the previous ten years. All the Liverpool fans had just 23 turnstiles to enter the stadium through, all of them crammed into a narrow concourse about 30 metres across on the corner of Leppings Lane. Just SEVEN of those turnstiles were the only access point for the entire terrace - 10,100 spectators - below the West Stand. The Forest fans had SIXTY turnstiles, spread thinly across the South and East stands. Clough was an asshole, crude, insensitive, sporadically racist, obstinate and bullying. But in fairness to him, even he admitted a couple of years later that he'd got this badly wrong. It's not just a matter of 'diplomacy,' it never was with him. What matters is that what he said was NOT ACCURATE. He didn't bother learning the real facts until later. It's clear you don't know them either, but why stand by the fake version when even Clough himself later rejected it?
He's not like you and I, particularly handsome. He was hilarious Brian wasn't he. His one liners are second to none here. Always having a bit of a gossip about someone but makes it sound so funny.🤣
Clougjie is as Cloughie was....no mincing of words....Hillsboro he is spot on,I was there as a Forest fan,why were the fences erected, cos of Heisel, common denominator,Liverpool fans-end of
A man despairs to go through his life and nobody notice's him, Brian Clough was not that man, he was his own man through the thick of it, he died knowing that he made a difference, in more than just football, i admired his style, don't be a sheep, you will get noticed.
The word legend does not justify what this man was, there will never be no other like him, many will try to emulate (cough Mourinho etc etc) him but what a crying shame he never got to manage England. RIP sir.
Cloughie was a master of mind games. Always kept his players on their toes. He could come across as abraisive, but I think beneath the veneer was a genuinely nice bloke.
One persons comment of {His Hillsborough comments ruins his legacy} Is out of order Brian Clough was devastated and after that incident he was never really the same man. Truly he was the best thing that happened to UK football. Listen to his players talk about him. There respect for him says it all. Sadly never got the England job. That would have been something to have witnessed and we as a football nation was robbed. Great man always spoke his mind bless him and had decent morals
Great guy who shoots from the hip! His comments about the Liverpool fans being responsible is not entirely correct. As we now know the reasons were mainly twofold. First & foremost the Police & management of crowd control was atrocious added to that the Liverpool fans who were being kept outside the ground were obviously becoming impatient as they didn’t want to miss the kick off. It was when the order to open up more access points that the rush ensued. I think the limited police presence outside the ground feared a riot & were pleased to see the fans move off the street & into the ground where they could be penned up & managed more easily. Very sad set of unfortunate circumstances & as a forest fan my sympathies to all those families that lost loved ones 🙏🏻
i went 2 a lot of footy in the 70/80s n it WAS an accident waiting to happen ,too many people allowed i with no tickets- turnstile operators always took cash for a pay day ,not like that went 2 the clubs .It happened week in week out at old trafford wembley klanfield all over the show . Cut to 1999 watching Blackburn v man city - from a field next to ewood park cos the fuckin best view[point ( a tree) all the tickets were sold for that ! :D we had a commentator in that tree, motty he was not! but brians right you can see there was an issue n no one backed off they kept pushing more people in cos thats what footy fans did
@@SteRDLK got relegated again though shortly after, spent 23 years in the 2nd division, even now, struggling to stay in the premier league having spent a fortune.
Brian was a true northern lad who certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. God, if he'd stuck it out at Leeds the sky would have been the limit. I thought he was great and would have loved to meet him, I'd have been overawed. RIP Sir.
Brian Clough was a brilliant manager, witty, articulate and controversial. I don't agree with his opinion about Hillsborough but I respect his football knowledge. In October 1973 when England drew with Poland and failed to qualify for the World Cup in West Germany, he lifted the nation's spirits by labelling their keeper a clown. He knew fans were devastated and he captured the mood of the nation by denigrating a goalkeeper who denied us many times. He also knew people would remember him for doing so.
Not sure if you were there or not but i can tell you that as a 14 year old kid outside that corner of the ground, it was the most scary experience of my life. The behaviour of a certain element was totally disgusting. It's no longer popular to say what one thinks but I know what I saw.
You can say what you want has long as you are right. And yes Liverpool fans wont have it but the truth is if none of these fans went into the stand with out tickets none of there 94 supporters would have died, its simply maths. If more people go into the stand than what the capacity holds they will be crushed. Liverpool fans being angry at what Clough said or anyone else, they should have been angry at those ticketless fans. The hard truth is the fans killed there own, unintented but true.
Was at the City Ground on Saturday and the aura of this great man still resonates around it to this day. True legend of the game. God bless you sir. RIP Mr Clough.
