What few knew at the time was this would turn out to be the last regular season NFL game Vin Scully ever called. His last NFL game would be "The Catch" game three weeks later when the 49ers beat the Cowboys for the NFC Championship.
This was to that point the biggest NFL game in New York since Super Bowl III. After the Giants beat the Cowboys a day earlier in The Meadowlands, if the Jets won this game, they AND the Giants would BOTH make the playoffs as they did (Giants for the first time since the 1963 NFL Championship, Jets for the first time since 1969).
