They only penalize "half the distance to the goal" when then penalty yardage is greater than the distance to the goalline. If you are on the 10 yard line and you get a 15 yard penalty, they only mark off half the distance to the goal (5 yards in this case).
@SPFW21
@SPFW21 3 года назад
The only thing that confuses me is that the ball was down at the 38...15 yard penalty brings it to the 23...another 15 yards should've been 1st down at the 8. The 1st penalty didn't bring them within the 15 yard mark. What am I missing here? Did the ref just make a mistake?

That’s not quite right. Half the distance is when the penalty yardage is more than half the distance to the GL. If you get a personal foul on the 24 it’s a 12 yard penalty. Only exception is defensive pass interference is always a spot penalty - in the endzone ball is spotted on the one yard line.

California had 4 football franchises in total but now down to 3. The Rams (go Rams) where in LA moved to St. Louis then Moved back. The Chargers also moved to LA from San Diego. But nobody really cared in LA about the charges because San Diego is about a 2 hour drive down the 5 freeway. And a lot of the San Diego Chargers fan base is in LA anyway. LA didn’t have a football team for about 20 years then Boom got two again. We used to have the Rams and Raiders too because the Raiders kept bouncing from Oakland to la. On the double Unsportsmanlike for Aaron Donald the reason yards are called “half the distance to the goal” is only if the 15 yard penalty is inside 15 yard line. They won’t do half the distance to the goal if the goal line is more than 15 yards from the spot of the foul.

The Browns didn't actually move back, that franchise is still in Baltimore. Cleveland was awarded an expansion franchise.
@shannonjohnson6532

Technically true. But the Ravens left the Browns legacy behind for the new franchise. All Browns team records are recognized from the original franchise. The Ravens don't have history before 1996.
@jrthmc29
@jrthmc29 3 года назад
Technically UNTRUE. Allow me to explain why this is false and you are incorrect. In 1995, owner Art Modell, who had purchased the Browns in 1961, announced plans to move the team to Baltimore. After threats of legal action from the city of Cleveland and fans, a compromise was reached in early 1996 that allowed Modell to establish the Baltimore Ravens as a new franchise while retaining the contracts of all Browns personnel. The Browns' intellectual property, including team name, logos, training facility, and history, were kept in trust and the franchise was regarded by the NFL as suspended for three seasons. So technically speaking the Browns front office, players and staff left and became a new franchise know as the Baltimore Ravens. Thereby leaving the "Cleveland Browns" in Cleavland. Also when the Browns resumed play in 1999 the club's roster was re-stocked via an expansion draft. Seeing as how the team still was based in Cleveland haviing truly never left the Browns were not technically considered to be an expansion franchise by the NFL. Now you know the whole truth rather than the false information you have believed for the past 22 years now. Go and tell all your friends 😁

To answer Daz's question about teams moving in the US, over years the team will build a new fanbase in its new city, but the old fan base will hate them till the end of time. The dodgers left Brooklyn in '56, and my grandpa still hates them. The saddest part is most of the old fanbase are just left without a team in the sport they love, sometimes for the rest of their lives.

21:08 The whole penalization rule of saying "half the distance to the goal" is all determined based on what type of penalty it is, because they all grade differently in terms of yards and some giving free first downs. i.e. since the first penalty was for 15 yards the new spot would have been 15 yards further from the end of the play, but there was a second one that would've been for 15 yards but the ball was less than 30 yards from scoring a touch down so they took half the distance to the goal; this goes for any penalty that is longer that is half the distance to the goal.

Regarding the supporting teams: many teams who move have trouble getting new fans in their new city, but they usually move to cities that didn’t have a team beforehand and the people there had supported another team. Many people support their college teams more than their nfl teams especially if they went or currently attend the college. People also support college teams based on location (I live in Ohio and I’m an Ohio state fan even though no one in my family went there). The Rams used to be in LA before moving to St Louis in the 90’s. So there was a fan base already in LA before the Rams moved back. But when a NFL team comes to town, most people choose to support that team, even if they already had a team maybe out of state or in another city. I live in Jacksonville, and before we got the Jaguars my family were Dolphins fans, but when we got our own team, we chose to support them.

The coach for the 49ers got really heated when the refs said the call stood because if you look at when he hits the ground after catching the ball it moved a bit and wasn’t in control and a rule is, if you shown the ball was in control in your hands even after hitting the ground, it is a catch. The coach didn’t agree with the refs because you can see the ball was out of his hands after he hit the ground then he grabbed it after the play

Our lesson for today: The “cleats” on American Football shoes are often about 3/4 inch long and about the same diameter at the base. (They’re conical with a truncated tip.) They are made of hard plastic and have a small steel cover on the end. They are also removable so the they can be replaced as they wear down or to change the cleat length to meet field conditions. They hurt like hell when a 280 pounder steps on your calf, or better yet, your hand.

It's only half the distance to the goal when the normal penalty in this case is 15 yards and the ball is closer to the goal than 15 yards. No such thing as a penalty longer than 15 yards unless its a point of where it's called like pass interference.

Penalties can vary in yardage, depending on the severity. Usually they're 5, 10 or 15 yards (the latter if it's a personal foul), but a defensive pass interference can be a 100y penalty at worst, because the ball is placed at the spot of the foul. When a player gets ejected, the team still plays with 11 men on the field, but the player is out. In case of Aaron Donald, that meant the Rams had to play without the arguably best defensive player in the league. There have been incidences of targeting (purposefully injuring an opposing player), this led to the Bountygate scandal that cost the Saints a few draft picks and got players and coaches suspended. In the US, a team usually has a large fan base in it's home town but also some fans in other places. This is especially the case if the team has been in a different city before. e.g. the Rams have been in L.A. previously until moving to St. Louis and now moving back. Many teams have resettled elsewhere and even re-branded. There are also expansion teams that have been added to the league later and that didn't exist previously. If people don't have a home team, they often pick a team they can identify with or that is playing attractive football. It's also very common to be fan of a player and cheer for his team as well, if he's not on yours. This especially happens when a player from your favorite college team gets drafted by an NFL team you usually wouldn't support.

7:40 most definitely a catch to me. Only reason to overturn a call like that is if the receiver loses possession of the ball on the ground. Meaning his hands can still be on it, but it’s rolling around from contact with the ground. It all comes down to control of the ball on the way down.
@jon8304

Since everyone is echoing the Rams questions, I'll go ahead and clarify that you were originally correct about the hats. The referee throws his hat to signal a penalty if he has already used his flag to signal a previous penalty on the same play. Since there are several referees on the field, it isn't common for a ref to toss a hat, since another ref could toss his flag to signal a second penalty. Safe to say if a referee tosses his hat, something egregious has happened. In the particular case from the video, the player was originally called for unsportsmanlike conduct when the flag was thrown. The hat came off for a separate unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the same player. Two unsportsmanlike conducts in one game automatically results in an ejection, similar to a yellow/red card sequence.

To answer your question, the Los Angeles Rams were originally in LA before they moved to St. Louis around the '90s and now they're back. so there are fans who are simply welcoming them back. And also, the NFL is such a big american sport, there are several fans of a team that are elsewhere. Dallas fans in San Francisco, Patriot fans in LA, etc.

"Half the Distance to the Goal" means the yards required would take the ball into the goal. SO if you are at the 2-yard line and get a 15-yard penalty, it will be "Half the distance to the goal (and an automatic first down - which may hurt more)" So it'll actually only be 1 yard.

Ok on the Atlanta/San Francisco catch, it looked loose and there would be some argument that he didn't have possession when he went down. The thing is the rule on replays is if they don't have clear evidence that the call needs to be reversed they won't. That one was close but the refs decided they couldn't reverse the call because it wasn't clear if he had lost possession on the way down or not.

If a coach was ever caught intentionally strategizing harming another team's player, they would be banned from the league for at least a year, the team would forfeit draft picks, and HEAVY fines would be levied against everyone who was involved. This has happened in recent times with Greg Williams in New Orleans.

Wimbledon FC situation was similar to the Cleveland Browns move to Baltimore in 1996. Browns owner Art Modell decided to move the team to Baltimore(Ravens now). I think there was a disagreement about a new stadium and funding. Cleveland kept intellectual property of the Browns such as name, logo, history, etc. The NFL added a 31st team in Cleveland in 1999 and used an expansion draft to fill the roster for the new edition of the Browns.

Oh, by the way, there was a defensive coach, Gregg Williams, who put bounties out for injuring opposing players. When that came out, he got suspended and lots of players got fined for participating. Basically, the NFL's positions are 'injuries happen, but if you're actively trying to cause them, we WILL punish you'. Of course, as with my statement on steroids, there might be people who just play as dirty as they can get away with. (The defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, yes I Googled his name to spell it, _was_ definitely one of those guys, and old age MAY have mellowed him out but I'm doubtful.)

Teams get new fans mostly due to the fact that when a team is moved from one place to another it is usually due to financial issues such as seating, ticket prices and jersey sells. So they only naturally look for a larger market and therefore will inherently have a greater fan base potential. Which is the main factor in seating, tickets and jersey sells.

The reason why the catch at 7:28 is controversial is because when you catch the ball you have to make a football move (running/ jumping/ stiff arm) to consider having possession as a receiver, if you catch and you're falling to the ground without making a football move with the ball you have to maintain possession of the football with two feet inbounds and you can't let the ball touch the ground before you catch it or as you catch, or in this case you have to keep firm control of the ball (no bobbling) if it touches the ground right after you catch it.
@TheEpic22

The rams played in LA for a while before moving to st Louis, so there was already a bit of a following there. LA didn’t even have a football team for years (which is crazy because they are a huge market) so there was still some support for their old teams like the rams and when the rams moved back LA fans were just happy to have a team again and would support anyone. It helps that the rams were contenders within the first few years. But it usually takes a few years to gain a following in a new city. The chargers also moved to LA around the same time and they really struggled for their first few years even though they weren’t playing too badly.

To answer the Rams Q -- The Rams are originally based in LA. Moving back to LA from STL, a fanbase was already acquired and ready. But more broadly, NFL is so hugely popular, if ANY city or State were able to adopt a team, a fanbase would certainly emerge. Winning and early success will certainly help a teams fanbase grow as well.
@Nelekets
@Nelekets 3 года назад
About the teams moving: yeah it's complicated. I think before the team moves, the NFL has to do a lot of surveying of new cities, and find out which cities have enough people willing to support a new team. Also, it's a multi-year process, so people know the team is going to move a few years in advance. So, the new city has time to groom the fans up there. Also in some cases, a team relocates to a city it was before, ala the Rams(they were in LA before they moved to St. Louis). There are even some cases where a new franchise starts where a different team used to play, like in Houston. The Houston Oilers relocated to Nashville Tennessee, and renamed themselves the Tennessee Titans. Then a few years later Houston got added to the NFL again as the Texans. So, in cases like that, the city definitely wanted another team as many people had supported the team there before. But yeah, i'd reckon that when a team moves, most people are kinda pissed, and a lot of people stop supporting them. When the, now, LA Chargers moved to LA from San Diego, a LOT of people from San Diego were pissed and stopped supporting them. San Diego is a small market, but they had always been very loyal to their team, so they were rightfully pissed off when the team owner decided to move to a bigger market in LA for more exposure. Thankfully, it seems like that has backfired though, because now there are two teams in LA, and the Chargers are definitely 2nd wheel to the Rams... LA has historically been a pretty shitty sports town though, outside of the Lakers in the NBA, and arguably the Dodgers. The NFL just doesn't survive there very long.

Usually when a team moves they have little support from the area they are in or reping anyways. This is also why some states have no team, there's not enough support for a team, teams and the sport rely on income from people going to live games. The not enough support can also come down to not enough people living in the surrounding area on top of not having the income to support the sport.

He said he ran to the camera itself and started screaming all of that, when all this was a Cam was walking to the Sidelines to talk to his coach and one of the big microphones on the sideline just happen to pick up what he was saying. I’m sure it would’ve been totally different head can’t walk straight up to a camera or microphone and started screaming all that, but that’s not what he did he walked into his coach and just happen to get picked up on camera, he didn’t walk straight up to a camera and do it on purpose.

The issue is that they want you to have control of the ball completely so even if the ball is on you, if the balls juggles and if you don’t have complete control of the ball, it still counts as an incompletion. I remember when my Dad and I had to explain my Mom this. Even though I remember one where the ball was out of his hands and between his legs but my Mom thought that if the ball was with the receiver nonetheless and touching him no matter what, then that was a completion but we told her sadly no it isn’t. She was shocked and raised her eyebrows and was like man, this game really is challenging.

The play you guys were discussing about the catch, the reason why the coach was angry was because he didnt feel he had possession of the ball because it slipped down from him and he re-grabbed the ball at his stomach. A different ref would call that incomplete due to loss of possession.

It doesn't happen often, but there are times where franchises move. As mentioned by the Blokes with the whole Cleveland, Indy & Baltimore thing. The Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee and were the Tennessee Oilers for a couple of seasons before changing their name to the Titans. The Raiders originally played in Oakland. They moved to LA during the early 80s and then moved back to Oakland. Of course, they moved once again to Las Vegas last season. The Rams were originally located in LA. They moved to St. Louis to fill the void the Cardinals left when they took off for Arizona. The Rams were sharing a field with the MLB Angels which became inconvenient. St Louis built a brand new domed stadium (TWA it was called - can't remember the current name of it). After 20 seasons, they moved back once again to LA. St. Louis is a bit of a mystery to me. They are die-hard fans for the Cardinals (their MLB baseball team) and always seemed to support the Blues (their NHL hockey team) rather well. It's odd that two NFL franchises left there for better options. They had fan support as their attendance numbers were solid.
