Polo says he likes "smack talking", and that's what the Haka is all about - ritualized and cultural smack talking.

The Haka is definitely pre game smack talking. But, the reality of it is the intimidation factor. When you understand that the Maori warriors, who were headhunters and to some extent cannibals, that performed Haka as they confronted other warrior tribes before engaging in hand to hand combat with clubs studed with sharpened sea shells and other crazy weapons, and the stomping and facial expressions were used to envoke the warrior spirits of their dead ancestors to give them spiritual power to fight the best fight, that's when you really understand the Haka and that it isn't just some dance to pump up the crowd and to taunt the other team. 'That's some serious heritage tribal death dance. Hahahahaha

Your comment about everybody having to be involved is why I LOVE this sport and appreciate the level of skill required over football. I’m not saying that what football players can do its not impressive, they’re good at their assigned role. But rugby everyone needs to have all the skill sets. Cardio, passing, tackling, kicking etc. And all body types with everyone being absolute beasts! Such a great game Remember to tune into rugby sevens during the Olympics this year! That’s the only thing I watch during summer Olympics. It’s a fun, fast paced intro into rugby! And yes the lack of showboating is what I also love about it! Just score and continue on Keep reacting to these! Love it 🎉🎉

The thing about Rugby is that although there are specilaist positions for scrums etc, all players - ALL 15 players - have to be able to kick, tackle, run, pass, take a tackle, catch a kick, drive in a maul, defend a ruck and generally work their bollocks off for two 40 minute halves. Play doesn't stop when a player is tackled. If his or her team retain or regain possession it continues in pahse 2. Sometimes there can be 6. 9, 13 phases of attack or more. No rest, no hiding. NON-STOP. This video shows a single phase of play. Compare this with NFL where a play seldom lasts for as long as a minute. BTW Great reaction and appreciation. Cheers.

Since you are a NFL fan I'd like to point out that Rees-Zammit, the guy in a couple of these races around 11"30 is now on the roster of the KC Chiefs. It's unclear what they are going to do with him. Wide receiver or running back are possibilities. I'm unsure about the new kickoff but he can be quite dangerous there too.

My partner is from Ireland, is a big rugby fan and she has gotten me into it as well since we met (while I have gotten her interested in basketball). Last year we went to France to go see a few games of the Rugby World Cup, and it's slowly becoming a new favorite of mine :) The rules seem a bit convoluted and hard to understand at times, but it's usually way more fun to watch a rugby game than most other sports (especially football, no matter if it's the american or global version, I dislike them both).

Called a scrum cap but a bit of a misnomer now as in the early day only forwards wore them to stop cauliflower ear like wrestlers. Only some wore them though. Now back line players wear them to help prevent concussions in collisions rather than ear protection. Example Cheslin Kolbe of South Africa.

@@willsonj dude...I don't care what booksmart people wearing labcoats say. I played most of my life without them, and for a few years I did with them and I can promise you there were instances where I had head clashes and I mentally braced myself for the expected ensuing trauma, and there was a noticable cushioning of the strike. I've had multiple concussions in my athletic career and recognize the elements leading to them inherently, and these things do help. Would they prevent all or from some of the most violent collisions? Maybe not. But they do help (and way more than football helmets which I have played in as well....and they ring your brain and head like a bell.)

At 10:00 where you said you don't know the rules, the try (touchdown) was disallowed because the ref determined that the tackle was completed, meaning the tackling player was able to hold onto the guy running with the ball. As the ball carrier, if you just get knocked down then you can get up and carry on running, but if you get tackled and held then you have to immediately give up possession of the ball. So the ball carrier in that clip was penalised for not doing that.
@DanishTina

Yes can kick the ball forward but chasers from your own team must be behind you when you kick in order to be able to give chase.

Most of the clips here - or more than half of them - were from Rugby Sevens, which is a different game to Rugby Union. With only seven players aside there's a lot more space on the field and defences are far more stretched. Sevens favours out-and-out speedsters, because you don't really need all the other power and tactical skills required for the 15-man game. That's why guys like Conroy (Ireland), Norton (England) and Senatla (South Africa) really shine in Sevens. And of course the two American speedsters, Baker and Isles, who were both accomplished track sprinters before converting to Sevens.

Hey, thanks for introducing me to an appreciation of rugby. That was fun...some of the running gave me chills! Having known some rugby players, though, I gotta say, I never thought of it as a classy version of football; on the contrary, I've always seen it as a brutal, thug version of football. But I see what you mean...and there's a lot of beauty to it.

The try (=touchdown) at 3:20 was scored by Jona Nareki of my local team, the Highlanders, from here in the far south of New Zealand. Rugby's the national sport her. It's like AFL on steroids, and is full action - no long stoppages, just running and collisions all match long. These highlights are from two different forms of the game - rugby union and rugby sevens. The full version of the game (union) has 15 players a side and is 40 minutes per half; sevens is a cut-down - and very fast - seven-a-side version lasting around 10 minutes per half. There's also a related sport called rugby league, with considerably different rules. An average score, in all versions of the game, would be about 50 points across the two teams (e.g., 30-20).
@GSD-hd1yh

Only the ball carrier can be tackled by an opposing player. A completed tackle occurs when the ball carrier is held by one or more opponents and brought to the ground. This could mean the ball carrier is sitting on the ground, has one or both knees on the ground, or is on top of another player who is on the ground. A tackle is not complete if the tackler is not in contact with the ball carrier when he is classed as on the ground, and the ball carrier can then carry on instead of having to release the ball.

The thing about the kick forward is that, in principle, the ball is free, in open play. Whoever gets to it first can have it. Yes, that DOES mean that you can in principle kick the ball forward to yourself, which is not the same as a fumbled pass, a 'knock-on'. There are even examples of an attacker chipping the ball over the head of a defender in front of him, and catching it on the other side.

It broke away from rugby union in the late 1800's by working class players in the North of England for very good reasons if you were one of the working class players. For many years it was played exactly the same as union but there was a conscious effort to change the way the game was played . Saying that league was "inspired" by union isn't really correct mate. As I was taught growing up in the rugby league heartland of Yorkshire, to look at it as essentially the same game just played in two different ways. Both codes were created in England, rugby union in England is governed by the RFU (Rugby football union) and rugby league in England is governed by the RFL (Rugby football league) . It's not uncommon to refer to both as "footy" or football especially in Australia and New Zealand, but they also call Aussie rules "footy" and football. Then there is Gaelic football in Ireland (brought to Australia by Irish immigrants and evolved into Aussie rules) which is also referred to as football in Ireland - but never rugby. Obviously all across the British isles football is called football too. I I hope that clears up any confusion 😂
