Hey, remember when the Jets signed a vet to complete their team and he tore his achilleas 10 minutes into the season? This pick is inspired imo.

@covenant11 Then, you DON'T sign a 36 year old QB coming off an achilles injury and pay him $90m guaranteed, in the first place. If you DO sign a QB like that you have to go "all in" for those two to three years that you have him. Penix is ready start. The Falcons could have drafted him and spent the $90m elsewhere.

Love is 25 and started for the first time, it’s the same thing. At 26 with 2 years of learning under his belt he can be the guy in Atlanta for a decade at that point. We had Alex Smith, and you all Forget Patrick Mahomes as a Rookie sat on the bench, then we were off and running. With Cousins you have two years, and can build the offensive line, plug in Penix and be ready and take care of the 5th year option so basically you have 3 years on a rookie deal. Green Bay is a perfect example, they have Jordan Love but what happens if he doesn't win a Super Bowl, and what if not picking him was used to get someone that would have gotten Rodgers another Superbowl? I can completely understand why they drafted MPJ as Ian said "Nothing's more important than a QB" and that was EVIDENT in the previous season for the Falcons. Plenty of weapons on Offense with a, finally, solid Defense and none of that mattered because of QB situation. So having some "insurance" for now AND in the future to never be in that situation and to watch your team suck because your QB keeps throwing picks in the Redzone almost every week is something I can get behind. its Avery smart move for sooooo many REASONS. See Packers especiallyJ. Love. you have him under a decent contract for longer so instead of a cheap contract and then a massive jump you have a cheap contract and a moderate step up. you have a clear succession plan, you get to make sure the player is right and knows the system and the Falcons are in a very winnable division without a good great qb and nows they have Cousins and their future. there is plenty of help for whatever else they need in later rounds too. they have RBS, WRS and a good TE what is the down side?

Again the problem is Kirk's contract isn't structured in a way that would make taking a QB that early make sense. It isn't easily tradable or able to get out of within the next 2 years, and I really want people to stop comparing this to the Packers. For one Rodgers has a WAY different mind set than Cousins, and secondly and most importantly the Packers picked in the 20's this pick was number 8. That is a massive difference and the Falcons have had the number 8 pick 3 years in a row now and they always pick luxury, and not saying they wont work out but in the first half of the first round you gotta also take guys that fill holes and are high valued positions. And the Falcons do need some serious help on the defense they should have spent every pick on defense or O line.

i don't wanna hear he was a "reach"... he was clearly not making past the 11-13 range with Vikings/Broncos/Raiders, and it's not like you can just force a team inbetween 8 and those spots to give you assets to move up if they aren't interested, and just because you read mock drafts that didn't have Penix that high doesn't mean that's how reality was gonna go..... taking him a few spots ahead of where he was gonna go isn't "reaching"...... but that said, if the Falcons liked Penix that much to take him Top 10, then why they gave a 4 YEAR contract to Cousins is beyond me lol it's not like you draft a 23 y/o QB in the Top 10 to sit him until he's 27/28 before starting him, i don't understand what their foresight was here (or lack thereof)

It’s not a 4 year contract, it’s 2 years of guaranteed money so in real terms it’s a 2 year contract, Penix will be 26 with 2 years of learning under him at the latest. There is also every chance Cousins has a mediocre year and the Falcons decide to play Penix after just 1 year at which point he will have just turned 25. Nothing is stopping Atlanta from benching Cousins at any point in the next 2 seasons and making Penix the guy. @kyledavis635
@kyledavis635 Месяц назад
Then the Cousins signing was stupid. Best you can say about Penix is that he is an insurance policy, but nobody even knows how good the policy is, because he's never played in the NFL. And that policy has an opportunity cost of an impact player that could help you win now, as opposed to paying the #8 player in the draft to sit for who knows how long? The Falcons - or any NFL team for that matter (except maybe the '85 Bears) - don't have the luxury of doing what they did...

@torreyanderson6833 Месяц назад
If you're that scared of Kirk getting hurt, you simply don't/shouldn't have given him all of that **gauranteed** money. That's the bottom line here. If you're going to go all-in, then own it and continue to go all-in by drafting an immediate difference maker at pick #8.
@BoW-we9qf

It’s simple. QB second contracts are killing teams. They know in two years they will either have to draft whoever is available in whatever position they are in(which probably won’t be better than this year), pay another veteran the kind of money they just paid Cousins, or get a cheaper stop gap veteran. Having a rookie contract QB that you can win with is the modern NFL (Brock Purdy). QB guaranteed money is going to sink a lot of teams in the upcoming years. Only one Mahomes out there right now. All of the other QB’s aren’t living up to their money.

Very good point. But why do people think Penix will be great... he was the fourth QB taken in this draft and many teams had him as the 6th best prospect? He is not very mobile, which makes it that much more difficult to succeed in today's NFL... I like him but he's certainly not likely to come in after sitting for two years and be good right away. You're having to pay him as the 8th pick.... Let's say it he gets it together in year 4 after sitting for two years. Now you'll have to pay him big to retain him i.e you'll likely get minimal benefit out of his rookie deal. And who knows what the QB landscape looks like in terms of rookies and free agents that far into the future? This pick is well beyond questionable...

The idea that drafting Penix makes sense because it sets you up for the next 10 years assumes Penix will be good in the NFL (after spending six years in college and two years on the bench). It makes no sense to use a Top 10 pick on a guy who won't help your team for two years right after giving a QB $100mil in free agency. Nevermind what it does to the relationships, the Falcons should be doing everything they can to win now with Cousins (or they shouldn't have signed him in the first place).
@alexanderfedderly
@alexanderfedderly Месяц назад
I think this move would make a lot of sense... if they just hadn't paid Cousins so much money. I thought Cousins was the right guy to go get if you want to maximize your chances of winning right now, but they really overpaid for a guy nearing the end of his career, coming off a major injury. If they had paid Cousins half as much, and then picked Penix at 8, I could maybe get on board with that. But if you sign a guy for a $180 million, you're going all in on right now, and that means doing everything you can to build the roster, not waste such valuable draft capital on a back-up.
