The preseason talk of the AFC West, then the AFC East during the first half of the season, each of those two divisions were discussed as getting all four teams in the playoffs. Unfortunately, as Steve demonstrated, neither will happen, especially if the Steelers join the Bengals and Ravens (each of their fellow playoff qualifying AFC North teams) by winning out.

They played the jets today. Gb beat Minnesota today and if they beat Detroit next week that’s 2 more conference wins compared to Seattle’s possible 1 next week against the rams. It’s basically as he said GB will leapfrog them. No matter what with a win vs Det.

GB already has the better conference record, that aspect of next weeks game is irrelevant. It's just that in a 3 team tie Seattle has the tiebreaker, but if it's just GB and Seattle then GB gets in because they have the better conference record.

Yeah, he suggested that Seattle has the conference record tiebreaker right now. They do not. They are actually the worst of the 3 in conference record. However, the 3 way tie now has GB eliminated first then Detroit eliminated next based on head to head in both steps.

Steve didn’t explain it correctly. The reason SEA is currently sitting in the 7th seed is because it wins a 3 way tie with DET and GB. Since GB and DET play each other (assuming no tie), then it can only be a 2 way tie if SEA wins. SEA wins a two way tie with DET but loses the tiebreaker with GB.

To be pedantic, Packers already have the advantage over the Seahawks in conference record. The reason they're in 9th is because you use division tiebreakers before looking at teams across divisions, and the Lions beat the Packers in their only matchup so far. So the Lions eliminate the Packers on that basis, and the Seahawks beat the Lions in like Week 4, so they hold that tiebreaker.

@@striking964 yeah it was explained poorly. The reason Seattle is ahead now is because in a three way tie, an in division tie takes priority. DT beats GB based on head to head, then SEA beats DT based on head to head. GB has tiebreaker over SEA, (6-5 for GB to 5-6 for SEA) but Detroit is in Green Bay’s division. if GB wins and has 7 conference wins that is more than SEA can not match no matter what, and also gives the lions an L, jumping them with no tiebreaker needed. Hope that made sense

It still doesn't make sense. Why does Packers division win matter more? The Seahawks game is also a division win for them vs the Rams. Neither the Packers or Lions should make it in if the Seahawks win.

I had the same question. He explained it kind of in a stupid way. Seahawks and Packers have the same division record which will be the same if they both win (4-2 records). The problem, that Seahawks will be 6-6 in a conference and Packers will be 7-5 (they are at 5-6 and 6-5 respectively now)

The Packers and the Lions both already have a better conference record than the Seahawks. The Seahawks have the tiebreaker over the Lions due to head-to-head. It's actually funny - if the Lions had beaten the Seahawks and lost a different game, the Seahawks would already be eliminated. Tiebreakers are huge when it comes to the playoffs.

I think whats confusing most is why they are seeded that now. The reason is tiebreakers NOW. Hawks hold a tiebreaker over the lions, and the lions hold a tiebreaker over the packers NOW. If the Packers beat the Lions, they then replace the tiebreaker over the Lions. And the Packers would still hold the tiebreaker over the hawks, in the conference record.

I think the NFL needs to re-evaluate this whole regular season and playoff system. They need to drop the extra regular season game and go back to 16 and add an extra playoff team to each conference. No more first round byes. I rather have 1-8 in each conference, if they want to set it up with records instead division winners, that doesn't matter, but I would like to have 16 teams in the postseason starting in 2023. Philly should have already clinch their division, you win 13 games it should be almost automatic.

@@isaiahh4108 Not really. As it sits right now, the NFL has 14/32 (used to be 12/32) making the playoffs. The NHL has 16/32 teams that make the playoffs, and the NBA has 16/30 make the playoffs. It gives teams that have winning records a chance to make a playoff run.

seattle has tiebreaker over detroit on head-to-head, detroit (currently) has tiebreaker over green bay on head-to-head, and green bay would have tiebreaker over seattle on conference record. however 3-team tiebreakers are evaluated differently and seattle has the 3-way tiebreaker over both detroit and green bay which is why things are weird

This shows that he doesn’t REALLY understand the NFL all that well, when he said that the Packers would move ahead of the Seahawks because the Packers would get a conference win. The Seahawks would also get a conference win if they beat the Rams. The Packers currently have a better conference record than the Seahawks and already own the tiebreaker over the Seahawks, but when there’s a tie between teams within the same division they do tiebreakers between the division teams first, and the Lions own the tiebreaker over the Packers so that eliminates the Packers, and the Seahawks own the tiebreaker over the Lions.

All 3 teams are tied right now. 1st tie breaker is H2H. Detroit beat GB, but SEA beat Detroit. That's why there placed in that order on the board. 2nd tiebreaker is division record, 3rd is conference record. If SEA and GB win, they are both 4-2 in their division, but GB will be 7-5 vs NFC and SEA will be 6-6. So GB wins on the 3rd tiebreaker

Seattle is ahead because of Detroit win against GB, apply division tiebreakers between the 2 NFCN teams to eliminate one, and then get to tiebreakers between SEA and DET.

The Seattle Greenbay tie breaker doesn’t make sense to me. The Rams are also in the NFC. Both teams are playing conference games. What am I missing?

You are missing the current 3 way tie. Seattle has the tiebreaker in a 3 way tie. Green Bay also plays Detroit next week. If Green Bay wins they have a 7-5 conference record while the best Seattle can have is a 6-6 record. Detroit is eliminated with that loss and Green Bay is in the playoffs.
