This was a special on Espn 2 in 1996 documenting the NFL'S Toughest Man. #95 Greg Lloyd of the Pittsburgh Steelers was voted #1. R.I.P. Steve Sabol of NFL Films...
I remember watching him on the Steelers back in the 90's and he was one hell of a competitor and was a savage hitter. I really thought he deserved to be in the hall of fame.
Honestly It was just his lack of stats that kept him out of consideration. Lloyd's intensity was what made him special, he could do and did more than just sack the quarterback.
With today's rules that protect QBs the league would penalize him for 70% for those hits 😆 😆 Man, he was one hell of a player 1990s-early/mid 2000s last great era of football 🏈
We could sure use a guy like him know to offset T. J. Watt! A time when teams couldn't rush for 50-60 yds or a grand total of 250 yds in 4 games know we are giving up 200+ yds most every game! Greg
Sounds like a player who overcame the mediocrity that Free Agency brought to many NFL players. Players lose that intensity when they get their contract and play not to get hurt.
The most underrated player of all time he wasn't flashy like LT or over the top like the Chicago LBs in the 80s he never got the attention that Lambert or Butkus or Lewis but Im telling you now I'll take a healthy Greg Lloyd over ANY not OLB but defensive player period all time I had surgery and it was local anesthesia so I wasn't under at all and the surgeon was the Steelers general surgeon in the 90s and he asked who my favorite Steeler was and I said not favorite Steeler favorite player period I said Greg Lloyd and hesaid good pick me too. He examined Lloyd for a sports hernia once and he said Lloyd was the finest physical specimen he had EVER seen. Lloyds only downfall was he played with reckless abandon and every hit he put on you had to be devastating he was a throwback to another time but hands down my favorite player all time and the crazy thing is when he was in his prime if you jumped ahead 30 years to today he would still be the best player on the field. He almost died from a staph infection he got while having surgery on his Achilles but he recovered and played another year or two. Dom Capers went to coach the Panthers and he took Lloyd knowing he would never be the same just because Lloyd was the most passionate player he ever coached. He most likely wont get in the HOF but he deserves it when he played in the SB against the Cowboys they had probably the most dominate OL ever definitely the biggest and they still double teamed him because if he squared up on Aikman he was gonna turn the lights out. He also said he played football because he was good at it and it paid well. Could you imagine if he loved the game?
Larry Allen ran over him in the SB.. levon Kirkland was the best player on the field that game. I've been watching NFL since 1976 and I love Greg Lloyd, even had his jersey, but he wasn't a Hof 'er. He was just too undersized for a olb.. Kevin Greene was better.. LT wasn't just flashy.. he was the greatest LB in history along with dick butkis.. Lloyd is basically Heinz Ward.. close, but not a Hof"er.. but I believe they let in too many of these types of players in there today.. should be more exclusive.
That’s a good point about the Larry Allen play although as the game went on Lloyd made his adjustments. He was a three time first team all pro and 5 time pro bowler. I believe without the injuries and the Steelers misusing him early in his career he would’ve gotten in(deservedly so). But he definitely deserves his spot in the Steelers ring of honor. His early to mid nineties run was terrifying for quarterbacks🏈
I went to college near Pittsburgh and we hosted a charity off season basketball game with current Steelers. Gregg Lloyd played the game with the intensity of a Super Bowl. He gave everything that he had on the court.
My favorite player in the 90s. I was a Steelers fan in the 90s because of Greg Lloyd. He was like Jack Lambert, Joey Porter, and James Harrison all in one.
Greg was truly something to behold.......a breathtaking physical specimen & phenomenal talent who dominated the nightmares of every opponent who had to face him on Sunday afternoon. The Steelers of 2013 could sure as hell use someone of his talent.......finding that someone is the difficult part.
If you had Greg and James H. as your 2 OLB I guarantee there would never be fights for hitting the QB late cuz no one would want to mess with that duo.
No doubt! Rod is actually my favorite but I couldn't pick between the two of them. We were so lucky to have them playing at the same time. I was lucky enough to see so many games at Three Rivers-some of the best football ever.
@@guins99 Lol. Sorry pal- I'm 58. I've been to numerous games at both Heinz and Three Rivers, and 4 AFC championship games. I met LC Greenwood, Joe Greene, Mike Webster, Gordon Gravelle, Mike Wagner, Jack Lambert and other Steelers when I was a kid at autograph signings and golf tournaments. Great times! And read what I wrote- I said "more" than Lloyd, not "as much" as Lloyd.
anyone remember the "The load in this Quarterback's Pants brought to you by greg lloyd" commercial. I think it was Nike. I think it was a Cardinal Quarterback (possibly buerlien). I remember seeing it once or twice but haven't been able to find it. Greg Lloyd was / is KING of the badasses.
Watching this again, on game day vs Ratbirds Dec 5th 2021 Steelers are 5-5-1. This is what has been missing from this team for along time! You were a game changer Greg! And that to me makes you a Hall Of Famer!
+Christopher Socha just the sheer presence animals like Lloyd and Lawrence Taylor would make Marcia Brady crap his pants. that ballerina couldn't play in the 1990's, that's how pansy the game has become.
Is he in the ring of honor? If not, he should be! In my opinion the closest player that the modern day Steelers have to a Lloyd would be either Watt or Heyward.
Lloyd? What a laugh. The guy was weak......big mouth coward. I straightened him out in 3 seconds...he was ruining a Father and son picnic on an Indian reservation. This clown had a t shirt that stated REAL men are black men. He was insulting a young American Indian lad with red skin.I called the late Russell Means AIM.The rest was alot of fun for me. Lloyd was always "acting" It must have been difficult for him to ?act"tough all of the time.He always picked on defenseless people.Always.
The mighty cowboys offensive line and Emmit Smith had 49 rushing yards. While he didn't have a sack he certainly can be credited with alot of hurries on Troy Aikman. As great as Larry Alan is, I don't know he dominated Loyd as he did many players in his career. I don't mind his attitude with his teammates. Coaches have always called it leadership.
Joe Greene had an attitude with some of his teammates too. He hated losing and clearly let it be known. According to Mel Blount, Greene annoyed some of his teammates with that stuff, but he met with Greene and said he realized that Greene was for real and it wasn't an act. It worked for them.
You never played real football huh? LT, Singletary, Lott, Atwater, Alzado, Derrick Thomas and even Seau would get on their own teammates when it came to effort and play on the field. Hell.. Tom Brady does it damn near ever week.. it’s called accountability. This ain’t soccer, tennis or baseball. This is the truest only Gladiator sport on the planet
